Hawthorn v Richmond

Whilst they did win premiership, points for losing a final to 9th place must be deducted, if the Tigers somehow manage to 4peat then they'll be back in the black IMO.

Points for winning a flag: 100

Points for losing a final to 9th: -400

It's the only way!

Disagree. The 9th team had zero pressure on them. All the pressure to win was on us. We were on a hiding to nothing.

Hallmarks of a 'successful' team:
- Premierships
- Finals wins, GF/PF appearances
- General win/loss ratio

On all of these points the Swans and the Cats are streets ahead of the Tigers for this decade so far (2011-2020).

We’re starting to get toward the end of another decade. I always enjoy “team of the decade” conversations as it’s fun to look back and argue he merits of the great teams... eg look at Brisbane and Geelong of the last decade, North Melbourne and Adelaide of the 90s, etc

Anyway, obviously at the moment Hawthorn of 2013 - 2015 are the premier team, being the only side to have won multiple flags this decade.

Having said that, Richmond look to be marching unchecked to another flag and are currently red hot favourites. Very good chance that by the end of September we’ll have our second multiple premier of the decade.

So, if nothing else, that would put them in the conversation.

Where do you rate this Richmond team versus Hawthorn of 13-15? Let’s face it, Richmond have become pretty bloody dominant. Cotchin and Martin are an incredible midfield, they have a very good backline led by Rance, and Riewoldt is a star supported by a fleet of small forwards. How would you rate them against Hawthorn?
Personally dont think even close

Hawthorn are far and away the best team of the decade. They may even solidify that standing this year. Richmond have won Bugger all in comparison. If the Tiges manage to go B2B, I’d be rapt but they would still be the length of the straight behind the Hawks.

The year they beat West Coast. Didn’t they comfortably lose in Perth, recover to make the GF and then proceed to smash the Eagles in Melbourne? Results probably suggest they may have lost a prelim in Perth.
Lost to WC in the Qualifying, smashed Adelaide in the First Semi, then beat Freo in the Prelim. Destroyed WC in the GF.

Wouldn't mind this being the grand final. Get the feeling it would be a treat for neutrals as well. We get our best side on the park and in a huge game at the G in front of 100 000 with the mastercoach at the helm... anything is possible. Our pressure yesterday was similar to what Richmond have been doing to teams for two years.

Geelong won 3 in 5 years, appearing in 4 GFs. Had a better win loss % than Hawthorn from 2012 to 2016.
Hawthorn won 3 in 3 years, and played in 4 GFs in a row. No one gives a flying * about win/loss % when reviewing history - results matter, and Hawthorn got them when it mattered.History will show that between 2012-2016, Geelong got knocked out in an Elimination Final, were beaten by Hawthorn in a Prelim, got beaten in a semi, missed the finals, and lost a Prelim.
******* stupid comparison, but hey, you are from Perth...

Well within the realms of possibility. Hawthorn are right there, West Coast are a little wobbly and GWS are adding to their injury list weekly.

You know Essendon fans have lost hope of making finals when they start making threads pumping up Richmond at Hawthorn's expense.

Even if Richmond 3 peat from here they still can't compete with Hawthorn unless their hypothetical 2019 flag season is a lot better than 2017/2018.

Richmond didn't win a final in this decade until their flag year.
2016: 13th. 79%
2017: Flag. 118%
2018: In progress. 1st place. 139%
Lowest finish place this decade: 2010 15th (second last). 73%

Compare Hawthorn's 2011-2015:

2011: Prelim. 144%
2012: GF, Runners Up. 154%
2013: Flag. 135%
2014: Flag. 140%
2015: Flag. 158%
Lowest finish place this decade: 2017 12th (7th last). 90%

IF Richmond win this year, they've had one Hawthorn like season in terms of dominance. Extra points for two in a row, but two is not three. They've missed finals multiple times compared to Hawthorn once.

Geelong also currently shits all over Richmond this decade. Heaps of prelims, and 2 flags vs 1 flag. No contest.
Sydney's consistency in making it deep into finals, and one flag over a very high quality Hawthorn side also puts them in front of Richmond right now. Richmond go ahead of Sydney if they win this year.

I don't think we're up to it this season, but don't write us off either. Our best side on the park?

  • 12 of the 22 are Premiership players - almost all multiple
  • 1 has played in a GF (T Mitchell)
  • The best coach of the modern era.
2008 is a prime example of what can happen on the day. The best team in the Home and Away series does not necessarily mean the best team in the finals.

Like I said, I don't think we're up to it, but you never know.
