Player Watch Pick #53 (2022) - Tom Scully

Have we created a tradition that tall skinny forwards get the number 32 as their first number?

If you count Sam Mayes, Jake Neade and Matthew Broadbent as skinny tall forwards :p
Ken counted Jake Neade as a skinny tall forward, does that count?

I heard Charlie Dixon on fiveaa say that Skulls is the pick of the new boys as been strong key forward. Probably one of the most exciting project players on our list

On TET-AN00 using BigFooty.com mobile app
What's the knock on him for him to drop to pick 53? He dominated the U18s SANFL comp.

Probably posted on Instagram simulating gay sex and drinking a seltzer.

He never seemed to get much oxygen in the lead up to the draft. 37 goals in his first seven games, finished with 50 for the year, so whether it was thought he dropped off, idk. Only played 1 championship game, maybe there was a thought he was getting by on his physical advantages. Question mark on his contested game.

But he looked competent at ground level for a tall lanky forward. Lead to good places and a good eye for goal.

Just catching glimpses of him in pre-season training, his height is eye-catching and he's not all skin and bone.

I have seen him twice now and I can't think of a novice tall forward for Port who has impressed me more than
Scully on first joining the club. Time will tell, but barring injury, I think he's got a very bright future.
Agree from what I saw at the last open training session b4 Xmas. Very competitive, agile & good hands. Very happy with this selection.

Came late to footy from Soccer background , seems a mobile, leading type forward. Read from others who saw hm as a junior, that he was a poor mark but good at ground ball with good recovery. Will watch with interest as to how his marking goes in the contested stuff at this higher level. More Westy type then Dixon perhaps.

Just my thoughts after watching him over the past two or so years:

At 204cm is more a lead up forward that can have some impact at ground level. Won't crash packs or haul in pack marks due to his lack of strength and unwillingness to do so. Goes to ground far too often and often flails his arms in attempt to milk a decision. Gifted ground level take for his size but double-clutches a lot of aerial balls and has weak hands under spoiling pressure. Very much a confidence player whose disposition can fluctuate in-game, can play a poor half but bounce back and get on a run. This is reflected in his set shot goal kicking which can be streaky. Body language can suffer too, very lanky and needs to improve his posture and keep his head up. Failed to dominate despite his size and talent at school level, albeit in a poor CBC team. Had 10-15cm size advantage in some situations but regularly lost one on one contests to beefy private school scrappers. Will require patience and heavy investment. Best case scenario is that he pans out into a player similar in style to Rory Lobb.

So it would seem, that Lord remains the best hope for a contested mark type forward and Scully will be the leadup flanker type, hopefully his contested marking improves dramatically with long term dev. If you could combine the best of both you'd have a star.

Not sure where this late to footy from soccer background came from?

Pretty sure he was playing at Lockleys from u/8s. In the mix with westies from their 13s and playing first XVIII at CBC by the time he was in yr
9.

Given his natural abilities he would have made an awesome keeper though.

Like most tall forwards will need time to build confidence, like Todd comes across as a nice lad so doesn't have that natural confidence you get from the mongrel types.

Sounds like the perfect bloke to play CHB for 3 years and then throw forward. Basically the opposite to Lord.

Send him back to develop.

Lord didn’t need to develop the facets above, needed to Chad Cornes multiple efforts himself as a key forward.

Perhaps late to footy is wrong term, but the poster whose son played with him, suggested that footy was a second sport initially to his soccer focus. Obviously grew and changed to footy as his main focus. Cant find the post but , he suggested that Scully as a junior couldn't clunk anything but was good on the ground and very mobile for his height.
