Player Watch Pick #59 (2022) - Kyle Marshall

I’m getting on board with those who think Kyle is potentially the most important player we picked up off season.

I will give McKays management a blank cheque to get a decent KPD over if that’s what we have to do to go someway towards rebuilding our back six but if Kyle is tracking well at the end of the year I’m just as happy to start giving him games next season and look for a short term fix to help out for the year.

What about his games have you excited? What are you seeing there?

The write ups sound solid and he sounds like the player we need, just raw. I must say, watching his game, I thought he was really average - poor positioning and didn’t have defence down at all. But he is raw.

There’s plenty to work with.
I thought his positioning was Ok he’s certainly more competitive at this level than I was expecting when drafted. All he needs to do is be competitive and have his body mature it will come.
Nobody is saying he’s lining up this season but I’m confident he will improve as his body matures.

Way too early for him. We still need 2 ready made signings in his position.

I haven't seen enough of this lad as yet, what are peoples opinions of his first year as a skinny kid in the sanfl, is there something to work with?

200cm key defender who played all-majority of the year, battled blokes 10-20kgs heavier and found a way to compete. Plenty to work with!

Very raw, but several times this year, I saw there was plenty to work with.

Has to hit the gym hard over summer. As Harris Andrews has shown, you can be 200cm tall and wiry, but strong and if you are a natural footballer you can take on the gorilla KPFs.

Not saying he will be as good as Andrews but Kyle will be built more like him and not like Stephen May or Noah Balta. So he has to develop his footy smarts.

To my eyes, he is s better prospect than Tom McCullum.

Agree, the key test for Marshall will be his ability to put on kgs. His football ability looks good.

Went to Alberton last night, stood up in usual spot in front of Williams stand for first half, but my knee was playing up, so I decided to use my access to a seat in the Quinn stand. End up sitting next to Kyle's old man Aaron and we had a good chat about Kyle, footy and other sports, in the second half whilst watching a decent effort by the Maggies kids.

The family are from Leeds and came over to South Australia 16 years ago. A bit like the Draper family (whom he knows well), and ended in southern Adelaide. I think he said that they live in, or it might been that they have lived at, Christie's Beach.

Dad is an ex rugby league player. He's about 6 foot 1 and solid across the shoulders and chest and big arms. So the genes are there for Kyle to get bigger.

We talked a bit of northern England rugby league - mainly Wigan and St Helens and some NRL. Talked about Leeds United and how they have been poor since he has been in Oz and they went down to League 1 division for the first few years in Oz, then finally back to the Premier League but were relegated at end of last year back to the Championship division.

He said if they won this morning they would be promoted to EPL next year and not have to go thru the 3v6 and 4v5 promotion stage. They got hammered 0-4 by QPR. Could still finish 2nd if other teams lose, as Leeds have 1 more game to play and a couple fighting for top 2 spots have 2, before the knock out games.

He said Kyle's family nick name is Stretch. His younger brother is 6 foot 3 and he gets called Shorty.

He said Kyle had stress fractures in his back over the preseason, so he didn't do a full work load. Said he spent a lot of time of the bike during preseason.

I asked about putting on weight with the stress fracture issue and he said its been hard and that the amount of running he does, he just burns off the calories. Dad said the club wanted him to be 7kgs heavier than he is at the moment, at the start of the season.

I said to dad that from what I saw live in the flesh last year, he is a better natural CHB than Tom McCallum who was our first pick in the 30's at 2022 draft and Kyle our last pick in the 60s.

Dad told me that he is sharing a house with Tom in Seaton. I asked, didn't he want to stay home with you guys? He said he and his wife encouraged him to move out of home and get the full AFL experience, because he would have had to do it if he got drafted interstate. He then said he doesn't waste so much time driving from down south, as its a quick trip from home to Alberton.

I asked about Tom's injury and he said after his ankle operation last year, it has got infected a couple of times and that he is still weeks away from playing again.

I asked about how much time Kyle spends with the SANFL top up players and he says he only does the Thursday night training run with them.

We talked a bit about footy as a game, and the soap opera that footy has become just like soccer in UK and Europe.

There was one bit of play in front of us where a Maggies player put on a big tackle and myself and most of the stand yelled out ball and we got the free kick. I said its rare SANFL umpires paid us a free and if he has noticed this. He replied that he no longer calls out ball, as he no longer knows what holding the ball is, at it changes every week. I said don't worry, there are millions who agree with you.

He says he likes the game, but thinks the rule changes have made it a bit soft, especially compared to his game rugby league. He knows they have to protect the head, given the concussion concerns, but he reckons he encourages Kyle to put in one big hip and shoulder rugby league style bump per game.

I guess if you see Kyle bumping blokes, you know dad has got thru to him.

We agreed to catch up and have a beer next Maggies home game. If Kyle makes it to AFL and plays a Friday night game, and roaming BT interviews dad, it should be entertaining.

I didn't ask and dad didn't mention it. That was a bit of down side, as I was hoping he would get more of the ball and I could watch his folks reaction.

Thanks REH. He had looked pretty good at times last year, but miles off it this year. Hate to use the word, but "timid" or at least hesitant aerially. The stress fractures and limited preseason would help explain it.

Xavier Walsh is an interesting watch. I can see athletic strengths like Noah Balta, but he is always going bull-at-a-gate in every play and makes a ton of stupid mistakes trying to do too much. His kicking though looks excellent. Not sure if he'll make it. If he does, he could be anything.
