It's really simple, Tim Kelly can nominate either West Coast or Fremantle, he has the right to that. Ultimately, Geelong will only trade him for what they see as the best deal, if he nominates West Coast, but Fremantle offer a better deal for Geelong, then they have every right to pursue Fremantle's offer. Same goes for if he nominated Fremantle, if West Coast offer a better deal, Geelong deal with them. Players can nominate clubs, but clubs have the right to make deals that benefit them.
He also has a third option. Sign a contract with Geelong like Gaff has at West Coast if a deal cant be done. A deal where he gets guaranteed money, but has the option of moving back to Perth every year like Gaff has in his contact from next season where he can move to another club if he doenst want to stay at west coast, while at the same time having the guarantee of the contract if he choses to stay. Its been rumoured in Perth media that Geelong has put that exact tyoe of contract on the table if Kelly chooses to stay with more money on offer that the two West Australian teams. Not ideal, but a better option than entering the draft if a deal cant be done.

West Coast fan mentality. A 25 year old mid who in his second season is in the top 7 for Brwonlow odds wont ever improve, because well he wont ok? No player ever improves on what they do in their second year (according to wc fans at least) Even though if he went to West Coast if he did get tagged he'd ease the pressure on Yeo, Shuey and Gaff. While if he didnt get tagged playing at West Coast he;d almost certainly have a better year than this year. Geelong only payed for the move of family over to help him and partner out, so yeah they've been horrible to him as well. The fact that he improved a heap on one season to the next normally increases not decreases trade value I would have thought. Considering Tim went from a good player to an All Australian and potential Brownlow contender in season 2019 probably means his stock has risen at a guess.
Sounds like you want Freo to give Wells's 2 top 10 picks.

So they can trade him to a team against his will?doesnt seem likely

Then try reading. I said if we got Tim for the pick we get for Brad Hill then thats a good result for Freo considering Tim's not under contract, but is two years younger and had a better year than Brad Hill last season in my view.

You can’t trade a player against their will to a club.

Considering Geelong has treated him incredibly well and offered huge amount of off field support there is zero chance of that happening. His already done interviews thanking Geelong for how they've supported him and his family this year. It would be even more risky for Kelly with a young family and with the afl's draft tampering rules to put his future on the line and risk being assigned to a club he doesnt want to play for.

West Coast fans dont get trading. They want a player who's All Australian and a Brownlow favourite for about the same trade currency as Mitch Mcgovern was last year after an injury interrupted year. Not happening despite him not having a contract.

For all the threats of leaving for nothing it very, very rarely happens in reality. Tim Kelly's year was similar to Lachie Neales last season with us in terms of impact on the game and better than Brad Hills year this season in my view. If Freo does a straight swap after getting the first pick from the Saints (not certain that will happen) then that is the best case to get him to Freo. For the record Im not sure how anyone can criticise the finish to the year Tim's had. He was named in the best four players for Geelong in 4 of the last six games if you include the Collingwood game where his second half played a major role in their comeback.

Cats fans dont get trading.

They want more for Kelly than any mid ever traded.

They would settle for what Judd was traded for.

They want more than Neale.

So far off the market rate its not funny.

No - drop Sydney’s second rounder for our second rounder and it feels fair.

Petruccelle is a only 20 and has played nearly 75% of games this year. Serious wheels and still in contract.
Messaging out of the cats is they want picks. They won't bother with petrol but they will ask for strong picks

Geelong fan mentality.

Kelly is worth more than Neale but would settle for the same as Judd.

You can fluff on all you like about improvement in the future, look at the Neale, Dangerfield and Judd deals and start pegging back your expectations.

Living in fantasy world.

As opposed to West Coast? They didnt want Tim Kelly when he was offered at fair value last trading period because they didnt want to pay the huge extra burden of a future second to get the deal across the line. They now are so concerned by his need to get his family back to Perh their fans want to send him to the uncertainty of the afl draft because they 'care' so much about Tim's welfare.

Stop rewritting history. Geelong admitted they almost accepted the Eagles offer. Then at the 11th hour changed their minds and pulled out.

Scott admitted that.

Thats comical. His year was better than Neale's last with us. Kelly's coming into his prime years. He had a better year than Brad Hill and is younger. You cant work out trades if if you think two late first rounders with perhaps a second or later pick coming back to west coast like most Geelong supporters are asking is the same as Josh Kennedy, Pick 3 and a Pick in the 20's which was the Judd trade. They're not asking more than Neale who was traded for Pick 6, 19,55 and with pick 30 coming back to Freo. FFS. West Coast fans. Its not hard.

Im not a geelong fan. Im Freo. They are not asking close to the Judd, Dangerfield (who deal was under value as was a restricted free agent) or Neale or Judd deals. Not even close to that. They are asking for a pick in a draft that will be mid teens at best and another pick that likely wont be in the top ten the year after with a pick going back to West Coast. Get a grip.

No. You're making stuff up.
'Eagles list boss Brady Rawlings said Geelong’s trade demands – understood to be draft picks 20 and 22 this year as well as a future first-round selection – were too high.' It was mentioned by Stephen Wells in the trade period they wouldnt be accepting pick 20 and 22 in trade for Tim and that was a fair way off what they would accept.
i cant see how after an outstanding year they wouldnt ask for more. No chance he enters the draft if a trade cant be done.

Interesting that Geelong supporters have kinda disappeared from this thread ever since Kelly's last game for them. Coincidence or not?

Wouldn't surprise me if they come back next week when he plays a good game against the Eagles.

After 7 years at the Crows, Kelly was at Cats for 1 year and asked for a trade, keep trying mate.

Kelly has children with an illness, Dangerfield didn’t. That’s the big difference. If kelly didn’t have children with an illness, I would be in agreement with you. Children with an illness are more important than footy, it’s pretty easy to understand ...

If my club had been in that situation last year, I would have wanted them to grant the trade request. There’s more to life than footy ffs.

So you're saying Tim is to blame..? He signed up to play.

Or did you say the same thing when GAJ asked to be traded to Geelong because his sister was ill?

Neale was under contract and when traded and he was already a better player than Kelly. Neale just got better again in 2019 just as Kelly has.

Two firsts with nothing coming back is more than Neale. Neale effectively went for pick 6 and 23ish. Kelly is not worth more than that as he isn't as good and is uncontracted.

Its not hard you just need to open both eyes!

Last year under contract Cats could ask for a premium, no longer now he is out of contract.

If the Cats demand two 1st's then fine, send Kelly + the Cats 2020 2nd back.

Deal done.

End of the day I see the Eagles upgrading this years first to a better pick and depending on that pick and its relative cost add either 2019 pick 22 or next years 2nd.

Really?

Geelong coach Chris Scott has revealed the club was “very close” to acquiescing to Tim Kelly’s request to be traded back home to Western Australia late last year.

While Kelly loved his inaugural season in the blue and white hoops, his young family were struggling to adjust to life in Victoria.

And so despite the mature age recruit having a year to run on his contract, Scott said the Cats were strongly considering a trade with West Coast.

“It would’ve been an outstanding deal for them, an absolutely outstanding deal,” Scott told Talking Footy.

“But the only reason it was entertained was that Tim wasn’t faking the fact that he wanted to leave was on compassionate grounds.

“We thought we had an obligation to explore that as much as possible without putting the club at a big disadvantage.”

The Cats ultimately rejected a trade, with the club keen for the 24-year-old to see out his contractual obligations.

Being very close and actually accepting the trade are very different things.
