In an individual season. Geelong 2008, luckily they bounced back in 2009.

Essendon in 1999 ...... luckily that heartbreak motivated them to become one of the greatest sides in 2000.

West Coast were great in 1991 but the GF loss motivated them to become a better side, they won flags in 1992, 1994 and added more in 2006 and 2018.

Port in 2002 and 2003 were a huge disappointment but luckily 2004 worked out well for them.

St Kilda had their chances in 2009 and 2010. In 2009 a Tom Hawkins poster probably ruined everything in the GF.

Adelaide also has had it's chances over the years, 4 times they had finished 1st or 2nd on the ladder for only a miserable grand final appearance in 2017 thinking Richmond were going to be easy beats. And even if there were no umpiring mess ups (Betts hold and the play on) Richmond probably would still have won.

Collingwood in 2011 were in a great position to defend their flag they knocked out Geelong the year before, but ..........

Brisbane have been good since 2019 with 2 preliminary final losses, let's see what happens this year.

Yeah there were two whoppers in there:

1. 1929 - smashed by 10 goals in the 2nd semi-final - progressed through to the Grand final anyway. May still have won it, but definitely easier than it should have been.
2. 1930 - this one is even worse. Beaten by Geelong in the Prelim final by 26 points. That should have been it. Season over. Instead, they replayed the exact two teams the week later.

I'm also fully aware that Geelong's first flag in 1925 was won by similar means to Collingwood in 1929. That was crap too.
Another reason those flags back then don't count for much imo.
