I would have thought either Coff or Gilbert play instead of Long. We have two inside mids on the bench, Clark will play the small forward role as will Long.
Three way rotation with Clark, Gresham and Long. Savage, Webster and potentially Newnes rotate through half back.

Frankly I think it’s the right move. Tough for Coffield, and Gilbert is the past IMO, but that’s life.

Would have preferred Coffield to Stevens ....but it is round 1

Marathon

Surprisingly low number of Thursday night melts....no work for George as yet

Pleasantly surprised that Richo and co made the decision on Gilbert, Mav and Dunstan based on the last couple of games. Integrity of selection must be paramount.

Go you mighty :heart::mwcirlce::mbcircle: :innocent:!
Don't worry DS....a loss OR win over Brisbane by less than 5 goals and I'll be up on here until 4am.

Might get messy after a big day at the footy! :p

Each to there I guess. Two inside mids and two small forwards on the bench seems strange to me. Maybe they are planning to play Gresh through the middle a lot more.

I’m yet to see anything that suggests Long is close to best 22 to be honest. Here’s hoping I’m way off the mark.

FB: Geary - Brown - Webster
HB: Roberton - Carlisle - Savage
C: Sinclair - Steele - Acres
HF: Gresham - Bruce - Billings
FF: Clark - McCartin - Membrey
R: Longer - Ross - Steven
I: Newnes - Armitage - Stevens - Long

Newnes to rotate through half back and wing.
Armitage and Stevens to rotate through midfield.
Long to rotate through small forward role.

Genuinely bewildered as to Dunstan’s whereabouts. How is he not even an emergency?... has to be injured.

Still think Coffield showed far far far more than Long in preseason, shocked to see Long selected ahead of him. I thought we were going to rotate mids through the forward line...

Anyways, it’s a good looking line up overall. Pretty keen to see how we go against the Lions. No excuses, should be a 4-5 goal win.

Exciting line up for me. Bold decisions too, Weller being omitted from the leadership group makes him a lot more droppable.

Positive signs that the coach will try new things to win this year other than persevere with the same underperforming players.

Got a $50 bonus bet from Ladbrokes and tempted to lump it on Clark first goal scorer.

I reckon Koby's role will be defensive Forward on Hodge .
And Ben Long will be the same on Charlie Cameron stopping him bouncing off the back of the square like he did so well for Crows .

A team boasting Armitage, Steele, Ross, Acres and Stevens, all of whom are inside mids or play significant time there, does not need reinforcement from the emergencies.

Emergency spots are tactical and injury cover, hence Marshall for example.

Apples and oranges.

Apples and oranges.
So if one of Armo, Stevens, Steele, Ross gets injured in the warm up or between now and Saturday who would you like to bring in? I know that Dunstan would be clearly top of my list, hence why I would want him as an emergency.

What has Long done to deserve a spot in the 22 over Coffield?

In the extraordinarily unlikely event that that occurs, then Weller probably comes in and Acres goes into the midfield rotations more substantially.

Nothing, but the correct question is what has Coffield done to earn a spot over Webster, Savage or Roberton in the 22.

Steven aside, it's a pretty slow midfield- actually a pretty slow team with no real hard running line breakers. Might be a closer game than we think.

Plays different positions

And Weller deserves a game over Dunstan!?!?

Who’s going to rotate through with Savage, Roberton, Webster off the half back line? Has to be Newnes now.. which I don’t mind.

I hope Long plays a blinder, he obviously really impressed Richo and co in the VFL practice match, because he certainly didn’t in the JLT

Not on form, but team balance trumps form unless the form is irresistible.

You’re not getting agreement out of me on this one.

Weller over Dunstan isn’t about team balance tho. It’s about emergency list balance.

Marshall, Coffield, Gilbert, Weller is a very versatile emergency list, I will admit.

I’m just shocked that one of the four spots isn’t a midfielder. I do get that it’s a lot easier to cover a mid than other specialist positions, but still...

I would be very tempted to leave Brown out .
Brisbane dont have any monster forwards .
Brings Gilbert back into the equation ?
