From the makers of The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, SpudQoach™ and the Terry Tough Campaigner Award, we bring you an in-depth analysis of all 12 Sweet FA clubs in a segment we call… Sweet FA Powerlifting.

With an unmatched insight into the machinations of the league, we here at TiFmedia will be taking a close look at each club over the coming weeks, as we uncover exactly what makes each club tick, and where we see each club's fortunes heading into Season 29.

We’ll incorporate a mix of statistical analysis, anecdotal evidence and exclusive behind the scenes insights to bring you the most accurate snapshot possible of each individual Sweet FA club from our unique view point.

We will lift the lid on exactly who does the heavy lifting, who’s carrying the greatest load and who’s stepping it up, as we recognise those around the competition going the extra yards, in TiFmedia’s
Sweet FA Powerlifting.

Baghdad Bombers

First cab off the rank is the S28 wooden spooners, the Baghdad Bombers. With a new skipper at the helm in Season 29, WaynesWorld19, we have seen the dynamic shift in recent times, as the powerful club continues to turn over their list and recruit more and more fresh 'talent' to their stocks. They'll be looking for a change in fortunes this season, and as is customary for the combative club, they have already courted more than their fair share of controversy early in S29.

hDEMOyA.png

With a heavy rotation policy in S28, the Bombers had a noticeable lack of representation among statistical leaders in S28, with only midfielder WFL putting up numbers worthy of All-SFA discussion. His 70.3 DT points per game putting him inside the top 40 players in the competition, and seeing him rewarded with the club best and fairest for his Season 28. Having lost their highest Mobbs votegetter, beez to the Gumbies in S29, their next best still at the club is veteran KohPhi, who tallied just 9 votes in S28.

Looking forward to S29, and second year players cadsky and Antonio BlueVein are both looking like taking their games to another level after respectable rookie seasons on field, and both appear to have secured key roles after a strong pre-season where they displayed their considerable wares for a rampant Vic Metro in their Series XV State of Origin championship winning campaign. Veteran Norma Lee Ava appears set to line up at ruck rover this season and is another one to watch, her 25 possession effort in Round 1 seeing her adjudged best afield for the Bombers.

Second year players Antonio BlueVein & Metalcrusher do the hard yards here quantity wise, along with the skipper of course. Having accounted for 33.52% (ABV 22.45% and MC 11.07%), or more than 1/3 of every Baghdad post in S28, the two young Bombers have picked up where they left off, combining once again early in Season 29 to lead the Bombers posting unit, with both sitting in the top handful of posters in their Round 1 clash against the Swampies to kick off the new season.

This week alone, MC contributed 10.14% of all posts in that match against the Rats, with an outrageous 217 posts, while WaynesWorld19 and a ‘quiet’ ABV combined with the former, to produce an eye watering 479 posts. WFL is another quantity poster whose numbers appear well on the up for S29 which will be welcome news at Baghdad. Coming off a surprisingly low, yet welcomed season average of 63.25 posts per week in S28, he contributed a whopping 175 posts this week.

Impact wise though, it’s hard to look past the quality of the old firm of Tony Lynn 15 and KohPhi, who as players brave (or foolhardy) enough to weather the Baghdad onslaught will know, still deliver the wheat in a truckload of chaff. Outside of that Antonio BlueVein does produce a quality at times that his sheer volume of posts may betray.

After poor representation in the committee room in S27, the Bombers have turned this around in recent seasons, with new skipper WaynesWorld19 having represented the club for the bulk of S28 before a brief late season hiatus, only for him to return to the fold late, assuming the captaincy for the upcoming season. In his absence, boncer34 was a strong and insightful contributor, while WW has since resumed the post for S29. A divisive character even in the committee room, WW has been a strong and consistent voice for Baghdad, and his club would be pleased to know he speaks his mind freely and fights for the club on any matters impacting them, directly or otherwise.

It’s hard to pick a player from Baghdad who doesn’t make their presence felt around the competition, with the club brand relying heavily on bravado and a domineering approach to any opportunity to spruike their club, welcomed or not.

If we were to pick out the kernel, it’s hard to look beyond Tony Lynn 15 and KohPhi once again. TL remains a strong media contributor around the competition, is nuanced and witty, and for the most part retains his own identity in a sea of conformity at the club. KohPhi at his best is one of the great characters of the competition, and despite being down on activity in recent seasons, both these two make a noticeable and welcomed impact on the media landscape, whether it be of their making or simply contributing. Antonio BlueVein is another to have formed an identity outside of the club in his short time in the competition and is growing into his own, while Norma Lee Ava enjoys a cult following and her shoop work, while at times on the nose, is generally of a high quality.

dTGpDmd.png

Even the most diehard Baghdad player would find it hard to argue against Tony Lynn 15 being their talisman. One of the few active remaining custodians of the HaroLad era, as skipper, TL orchestrated the moves that saw this new breed of Bombers’ brashness take hold, and to outsiders, it’s hard to imagine that anyone besides TL is pulling the creative strings and driving the culture of the club, no matter whether he currently holds the title of skipper or not. Ask anyone associated with the club, past or present, and they will speak nothing but praise for the man affectionately known as Uncle Tony. Even in this era of overt antagonism, TL has still managed to maintain broad appeal across the competition, perhaps most clearly noted by his being the only Bomber to finish in the top 20 in the beez these last 2 seasons.

I‘m glad I opened this thread despite the title . Subscribed in light of one of the more
balanced Bombers related writeups I’ve seen. I just hope you delegate the Warriors‘ writeup if you aren’t comfortable with deservedly talking yourself up :) .

Quality review.. it's good to see some understanding the Bombers 'approach' didn't just evolve, but was planned, implemented and then strengthened through selective recruitment.
It's not everyone's cup of tea, but that's ok...that was the intention.
I look forward to reading the remaining club reviews.

Great work TIF..👍
