47,000 crowd is a poor turn out for a club that has over 90,000 members and above that many other supporters.

Considering that this is no different to most other games during the home and away season in Melbourne recently between these two sides there really is no reason to play it here. Furthermore the whining from Richmond fans about having to go down to Skilled and that they shouldn't have to because they are a big club and have a huge member base is simply now not justified.

I am not sure if Richmond supporters are scared of the weather or just don't really turn up to show support at matches but based off today there is a strong case to say Geelong should be hosting a game between these two sides at Skilled Stadium.

Tend to agree. However, Geelong are probably happy to play the G against Melbourne clubs.

Port had 26k turn out for the Thursday night match, now that’s pathetic!!

Premierships are won at the G.
Geelong should be grateful for the opportunity to play another game there

Fishing?

Not a bad turnout considering that the forecast had a shitstorm coming all week. It also poured all morning which would put you off leaving the house at 2pm in the afternoon. Especially if you've spent the morning at a junior footy match or similar in the rain!

Considering a lot of the 90,000 members would not have entry to an away game and many won't purchase additional tickets outside their membership as that's a big financial commitment for a family.

Besides, Cats want practice at the G for finals footy

If this game has a forecast of 15 degrees and no rain, it's 60,000 +

Edit: Also ... not sure how you fit 47,000 into 36,000. Considering there probably couldn't have been any factors that made this crowd lower (timing, weather etc).... I think your maths is off.

See Jake Nialls article in the Fairfax press:

The MCG was once thought of as a virtually neutral stadium. Richmond has changed that perception, by dint of its 15-game winning streak and clearly weaker results on the road, the Crows, Port and West Coast having conquered the visiting Tigers this year.

Geelong beat the Tigers at the Cattery in round 21 last year. A few weeks later, Richmond smashed the Cats at the MCG, in a game that underscored one of the AFL’s pressing problems: home ground advantages to the ‘‘away’’ teams, particularly in finals.

There was 47,000 people there today on a Sunday afternoon time slot where
-75% of the MCG carparking was closed
-There was no train access to the MCG via Jolimont station due to construction works
-It was pissing down rain during the previous 24 hours, including during the game

Plus not many of the 96,000 Richmond members had access to today’s game as part of their membership as it was a Geelong home game. 16 game members (away members) only make up a small percentage of the membership base.

Today’s crowd figure was STILL 13,000 more than the capacity of GMHBA stadium in Geelong and was the highest crowd of the round.

The weather during that day and parts of the weekend that followed was horrible, and massive storms were predicted. I can excuse people for not wanting to sit in (what was forecast to be) pouring rain and bitter cold.

There's nothing to stop you from putting in an official complaint to the AFL about why Geelong's home game was scheduled at the MCG, but you're not going to get the AFL's reason here.

Do some research.

We played Geelong at Skilled / GMHBA Stadium last year as their home game.

Geelong im fairly certain have a few (3?) contracted home games at the MCG and im certain at least one of these are against other Melbourne sides. They have played Hawthorn as their home game a few times at the G. Just so happened it was our turn.

47K for a Sunday afternoon away game on an icy, wet winters day is a poor crowd. Thank stuff you're not the AFL CEO.

Its okay though, we play again in a few weeks at the G as our home game. Crowd will be a bit bigger then. Hopefully that'll cheer you up, sunshine.

You realise right Geelong loses as a result of this game being held at MCG? Been shown countless times

I dislike Geelong and despise Richmond, but 47k was an excellent turnout given Melbourne’s weather has been absolutely rank literally the entire day.

No other games on, not on FTA. I dont see the excuses being relevant, its a winter sport. And this is a supporter group that pisses and whinges about going to Docklands. Sorry weather not an excuse as far as Richmond are concerned.

It had nothing to do with us.... ask Geelong and the AFL.
