Caldwell has barely had a chance to play mid and when he has he's looked top quality. He has something you can't teach as a mid, genuine speed and vision. The query isn't his play it's his injuries but he has been fit for a good year and a half now.

Yes I am a fan of Caldwell, but to say he'd be our best mid is neither factually or hypothetically true.

There's just not many quality rucks going around at the moment. Darcy Cameron was tearing up the NEAFL, moved to the Pies and has again shown he's not there to make the leap to AFL level. Knoll & McLean were tearing up the SANFL and have been either injured or serviceable (I like McLean long term though). The best ruck in the VFL retired last season. The best ruck in the WAFL is currently 30.... There also aren't many rucks out of contract this year either.

There seem to be very few rucks who are out of contract at the end of this year, at least according to https://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/out_of_contract_players - I doubt it's completely accurate but gives an indication.

To get a ruck, we might need to talk to a young guy who isn't getting much game time but who's contracted.

Whether they're off or on contact, the younger guys I'd be thinking about are:

Tristan Xerri
Matthew Flynn
Kieren Briggs
Sam Hayes
Peter Ladhams
Callum Coleman-Jones

Oscar McDonald can't get a game and is out of contract at the end of the year. Right age bracket and seems very get-able.

Maybe he'd improve with a fresh start and more support, but never been impressed with him. Makes way too many mistakes.

Depends if Kennedy goes on next season. He wouldn’t be far off if JPK retires.

possibly? 195 games 2xbest and fairest, all Australian, runner up brownlow. DEFINITELY long way ahead of a promising 19 year old who's played 4 games.

That depends where you see Parker's best position. Personally it's as a mid/fwd anyway.

Caldwell could easily be our second best mid behind Parker anyway.

How many games have you seen play? Ill guess somewhere between 0 & 4?
Can you please give up making such big statements about this guy

Fair bit more than actually. There’s things he has that none of our mids have on our list

Probably the best chance we would have of getting a quality ruckman by round 1 next year would be Daniher, and him becoming a ruckman in the second half of his career like Paul Salmon did.

Just no! He’s not a ruckman.

He is also not looking like much of a forward. I am not confident about him being any use in either position.

However, as I said it may be our best chance of finding a quality ruckman from left field slightly.

Tippett was a forward at Adelaide and played his best football for us as a ruckman.

Salmon was a forward at Essendon, went to Hawthorn and won a B&F and almost a brownlow as a ruckman.

Everitt was primarily a forward before going full time into the ruck as he got older.

Jason Ball started his career as a forward for West Coast, before becoming a very good ruckman in the second half of his career.

I could keep going.

IF and it’s a big IF that he gets over his OP...I doubt he’ll want to put strain on his groins by rucking.

Just can’t see it

It is arguable that the ruck would place less pressure on soft tissue injuries than playing as a key forward.

As i said in my previous post, there lots of examples of tall key forwards becoming very good ruckman later in their career. Not a lot that I can think of, that have gone the other way.

There are but are any of those coming off major OP issues?
