Player Watch #34: Jack Graham - Part 2

Not a downhill skier, but gets exposed for what he is when we are not winning.
A good honest toiler who has his moments, but when you have had Dusty, Cotch in his prime, Prestia, Lambert and co. in years past, the expectation he'd become of that ilk was never a reality.
Nowhere near the cream.
Speaks volumes when his defenders poke their heads out every six or seven weeks.
Nowhere near consistent enough.

24 years old and nearing 100 games, should be just about in his prime, but he's never really kicked on.

Always seems to be stuck at that "okay" level, but that's not good enough when the guys ahead of him aren't doing the heavy lifting he gets exposed, and we get exposed as a mediocre side now.

The media were saying the bloose offered him 5x $600k last year. Hopefully we didn't get stooged into overpaying as he is so bloody bland and doesn't really offer much other than getting his fat arse beaten to the ball and half tackling that bloke without ever really stopping them. Each season he averages 3 good, a couple of OK and the remainder are varied between ineffective and putrid. WTF thought this bloke had a snowflakes chance in hell of being captain. I'm amazed how some blokes like him and castagna never ever get dropped.

This is pretty much spot on.

Probably why we should start looking at life after Hardwick. Dated game plan and hacks like Castagna and Graham are locks every week because they try hard.

Dimma clearly has his favourites and it’s driven quality like Naish (26 touches), Markov (21 touches) and Higgins (5 goals) out of the club.

A bit of a hard concept for some, but all true.
While the Grahams and Castagnas and the departed Townsend and Butler - played their role in better times, more is required now the stars and prime movers are out of their prime and they've been found wanting.

Don’t think Castagnas game was that bad to be honest, couple of goals and made an impact up the ground when he had his chances

Missed a very hard shot from outside 50 when he didn’t know how much time was left in the qtr

Couple of mistakes but nothing that was overly bad, but agree re Graham he’s not playing to the level
Really hope our VFL boys step up today because it’s probably at the point where they should be getting some time in the one and rewarding good form

One thing that I don’t agree with is the no pre season, maybe for round 1 and 2 but it’s now round 5 and played every game with no injury’s and full training
His fitness isn’t an issue at this point

LoL.
Talk about bending the truth.

Castagna's game wasn't too bad, but if we are speaking generally, he's been average to mediocre for well over a year.
Bright spots occasionally, like last night, but as a collective, so-so.
There was a reason he was dropped late last year and it was long, long overdue.
Been better this season than last, but still not great as a whole.

Half the league, probably more, is compromised and has missed time during pre-season or early ... and will likely lose more time to COVID and health protocols going forward. JG and Richmond are not the lone ranger nor immune. It's the world we live in.

Jack Graham, a pick in the 50’s I believe, is a solid B Grade AFL footballer.
In our very good years was able to go about his business and play a role while Cotchin, Martin, Edwards, Lambert, Prestia were the driving forces, good teams need players like Jack, Melbourne would have plenty that are good when Petracca et al are fit and firing.
Still value and will provide experience and a big strong body while RCD, Sonsie, Clarke, Banks, Brown etc find their feet.
