- there's also 6 new Irish recruits this year plus whatever was picked up in the draft (2019 figures not yet updated), thus there's over 30 overseas born players, quite remarkable given that every one of these came from a non Australian Football background. Also note the much larger number of second generation players.

The multi-cultural following of Australian Football is also obvious to anyone attending a game, especially in Melbourne. Obviously there's one person in this thread who hasn't had that pleasure.

4% is far lower than any other code & probably on par with united patriots front.

Jeff Kennett is under no illusion about multi-cultural following at games.

For the record, Open Murri Carnival in Brendale this year is expected to be attended by 30,000.

carnivals are nice, but doesnt change his point.

Spot on - It doesn't compare with the tens of thousands of indigenous playing every weekend in various Australian Football leagues right across the length and breadth of the country. It isn't practically impossible to bring them all together in a carnival - just too many and too spread out. Having 19 NSW and Qld Players in the AFL just shows the national reach of our Australian game amongst the indigenous.

Speaking of which, a new book titled "Aboriginal People and Australian Football in the 19th century" by Roy Hay is to be launched at the MCG on 8/7/19 as part of Melbourne Rare Book Week. It promises to "revolutionise the history of Indigenous involvement in Australian Football in the second part of the 19th century".
