He’s been our leading goal scorer at VFL bar Schache for last two years despite being tasked with playing as the lone forward half the time and back up ruck. He’s had good games at AFL level from limited opportunties, he was the best performed forward all preseason outside the big 3.

What form does JOD have? Literally zero game time in a forward line at any level.

Hence all our talls had good separation? Lmao what game were you watching - there was a lot of positives last week, separation between our talls was certainly not one of them.

Yes he had good form in defence, it was arrogant to play him off 3 VFL games in defence as a forward at AFL level - it nearly cost us. We’re not doing him any favours, let him play half a season at VFL level in the fwd line if that’s the position we see him playing.
I think it's a bit like the selection decision on a young Shane Warne. For those of you who weren't around 30-odd years ago they rushed Warne into the test squad because they saw he had some exceptional talent. I remember Alan Border saying the kid "really gives it a rip" which turned out to be a pretty fair assessment. The rest is now cricketing legend.

I'm not saying JOD will become a legend of the game but I think Bevo/MC have seen something they really like and want him fast tracked. I'm betting he'll be a regular first 22 player before long. Quite likely this season.

I must admit I was as perplexed as anybody when he was picked and played as a forward and then subbed off, but in this context it would make a little more sense.

You obviously haven't played here recently. Many clubs/grounds have been resurfaced in recent years, there are also some great facilities from upgrades, both in BFL and CHFL. Admittedly not all, but how many suburban leagues have ALL clubs with decent grounds and facilities.

I used to play in the EDFL in my younger years - some of the clubrooms were harsher than a factory during the industrial revolution, a couple of grounds literally had rivers as boundary lines after even a light shower. Others were swamps.

Even Keilor, always a well-funded club, I played a preseason game there once - ground surface was like concrete and I literally peeled the bottom of my feet off after the game from full-length blisters.
You keep stepping right out of a Monty Python sketch.

:think:Is that you, Eric?

Given the likely conditions I'd bring in McNeil for Oddonnel.

Hate to say it but maybe McComb as sub
If we were not playing a good team, where experience matters. I would have tried JOD over Gardner. I'd rather a mobile third defender who can read the ball well, and is not afraid to take a strong mark, over a player that just punches everything they see, and not always to safety either. Going from what I saw in the VFL when JOD played down back.

At times I see Gardner in line to take a mark, but still chooses to punch it. Not sure if its lack of self confidence in himself at contests, or coaching instructions. Just want him to back himself to take a chance now and then, get a few intercept marks. As they actually kill the play compared to just punching, where it could go straight back to the opposition unless it crosses the sideline.

Hey team, can anyone comment on what the ground is like for kids? Any activities on or particular areas that are better for families around the ground?
Hey Roogal - any intel that could help us out here?

Congrats Hobdog!

Hope you've got plenty of appropriate baby clothes ...

I'm a fan of all the Pythons (individually and collectively), but would nominate MP as my favourite, at a push. "Ripping Yarns" was, and still is, an all-time favourite (along with Holy Grail and Life of Brian).

Having said that, I have a few other footy stories that have entertained my off-spring over the years - and possibly scared them off from giving footy a "red-hot go" (to quote the Coodabeens!). There's nothing like the good old days!

The club usually runs kids activities on the netball court, which is roughly behind the bigger grandstand. Most of the undercover areas are here as well if it rains

Strong disagree that we need an elite defensive mid - who would they push out? Libba, Bont, Treloar all have the ability to do what you've described - but its a mindset adjustment.

Since Rd 3 our team defence and backline have been very good. I don't think we need much help in this area.

I'm as big of a Keath critic as anyone, but he has been decent recently and thought his game on the weekend was good. He was miles better than Gardner who still has no craft or guile to his game at all. He sees the ball in the air and sprints to punch it away. Doesnt matter whether he is spoiling us, them or no one

That midfielder would be useful at creating turnovers from an increase of pressure inside the contest AND be able to chase those fast mids that break away from contests at speed.

We don’t have a matchup for power/speed combos like Petracca and stopping being beaten repeatedly from the centre bounce. There are few teams that we have problems with but to win the flag, we need that defensive mid.

So now we're way too tall?! Never thought that would be an issue in decades gone by!!!

We aren’t too tall especially when we have two wings to cover.

Channel 7 Adelaide apparently reporting Tilthorpe is out and Walker is in some doubt.

That's what i was told
Doodee out as well. Laird carrying an injury but will line up.

If Walker and Tilthorpe miss, then the height battle is definitely in our favor. We just got to match it at ground level where I think the game will be won if the conditions are wet.

Disagree with this one. Treloar has been fantastic this year but defensive blocking as never been his strong suit.

We tend to set up differently to alot of sides though, rarely running a defensive sweeper and we seem to rely more on winning the ball ourselves as a priority than stopping the opposition. We almost always have a high HF running into the contest to play as an extra mid to help us there too (Macrae doing it this year, Smith most often last year).

Im not buying into the hype of Adelaide they've lost 2 out of their last 3 and only just scraped home against Hawthorn and also lost to GWS

I think we win and win well.. Tex won't kick a goal as Jonesy will give him a bath
I tend to agree somewhat,

They've played 6 games in Adelaide where they've won 4/6 with an average winning margin of 44.5 points yet in their 3 away games they've won 1 against the bottom placed hawks (should've lost) fell in a hole against the Giants in r1 and were soundly beat by the cats 2 weeks ago.

If it was at the AO I would be far more worried then Ballarat these injury clouds over key players are really swinging things in our favor further now for mine

Rachele, Rankine and Keays are going to be a handful for our small and mid sized defenders.

Dawson and Laird for our midfielders.

Going to be a slog in the shit weather.

What happened to scheduling Ballarat games at the start and end of the seasons while the weather is better?

Adelaide will have alot to worry about as well mate

So he's been worse than Schache yet you think that is enough to get a game?

JOD has the attributes to play as a forward and again draws attention away from the opposition

Lobb/Naughton/Marra had 7 marks inside 50 combined the week prior they had 3 it worked well

How did it nearly cost us? we were winning the game convincingly whilst he was on
It’s more than enough to get a game when the alternative has literally never stepped foot in a forward line at even VFL level 😂

Draws attention away… where I have I seen this before? Might as well load up 6 talls then.

How many of those marks inside 50 were taken when JOD was on the field? Considering he played 40% TOG I’d be surprised if it was more than half of them. We were not winning convincingly when he was on because we were hiding him on the bench as much as possible because we were way too tall inside 50.

The ball was rushing out of the fwd line before it even hit the ground, just like round one and two. I’m not saying he negatively hurt us with his own game - he was fine, but it was clear we were out on our feet and lacking run by the end of the 3rd qtr - you can’t play a man down all game which we pretty much did.

If they want to go overly tall - which it’s quite clear by now that they shouldn’t, then play the guy who is performing in that role and has actually played there before. even better just stick to what has been working for most of the year - it was an arrogant selection and in hindsight it troubled us.

Again this is nothing against JOD - i rate him, but the selection was poor. If we want to get games into him then great I’m all for it, there’s a pretty obvious position for him in defence over Gardy which he’s shown an ability to play over his minimal VFL time. Play him there.

Last weekend in the Greater Ballarat area was perfect. Autumn is usually consistent - real cold doesn't usually hit until late June, then July is freezing. Tbh, August isn't a whole lot better either - if the desire is warmer/drier weather and ground - and less Arctic winds - you'd schedule the 2 Ballarat games in April and May. But I doubt that works for any of the stakeholders.

Surprise injury to one of our talls coming up!

massive generalisation but talent counts more in the forward line and experience more in defence. Wouldnt be letting JOD anywhere near the back half at AFL level yet. And its mystifying how we could pass up Buku for JOD if we are that desperate to push Lobb to a wing.

I dont get it.
