I don't understand this thinking that we have to give our young kids a break.

Yes, younger guys don't have a fitness base like those that have done 7+ pre-seasons and may drop off as the season goes by, but they should have less of an issue with week to week recovery.

This was one individual perspective and was with soccer rather than footy, but at 19/20 I could play 90 minutes on a Saturday and back it up with 90 minutes on a Sunday and not have a single ache on Monday. Have coached many young blokes that have done the same.

Yet by the time I was 30, playing 60 minutes in one game over the weekend would see me feeling like I'd been put through a meat grinder until Tuesday/Wednesday. I think we take everyone on a case by case rather than assume anybody "has to" have a rest because of their age.

Personally think some of the older guys may be the ones that need to be managed thru this more.
Case by case is right. Not only the individual's age and physical abilities but also his role and how much physical contact he endures.
I don't have the stats but I reckon the midfielders (incl English) would have done a heck of a lot more Kms than someone like Keath or Cordy. And even within that group English and Macrae have probably done a lot more distance than Bont or Libba.

Libba (rest) - West
Dale - McLean

Richards in the gun if he has another stinker. Young also could come out. Added nothing on Friday

Trengove must have done a poo in Bev's locker, so he's out. Such a strange story there, he wasn't setting the world on fire but nor was he playing terribly last year and he's just vanished from the earth. In five years we'll think we dreamt him. I don't want to stick the boot into Ryan G but Trenners is clearly better.

Those who think that Lachie Young added nothing - he ran harder & faster than almost any other player; the TV isn't the best medium to value a player's impact.

I presume Bailey Dale does a lot of forward pressure & covering or he'd be dropped. Maybe he's riding the remnants of 2019's late wave.

Agree with your point about just basing an assessment on what you can see on TV. Not sure what La Young did off the ball and he may have followed Bev’s instructions to the letter but ..... if running hard is all that is required we should draft Steve Monagehtti and be done with it. I didn’t think his kicking was up to par but it is only one game.

Also in the hard to tell on tv vein did anyone think Vandermeer looked absolutely stuffed in the last q? Maybe he just got a knock or something but he looked exhausted to me and may be in line for a break.

Wonder how Fergus is going.
He kicked a goal in the scratch match against the Dons' leftovers.

That's all I've heard all year, but at least it means he's running around kicking a footy. Bevo seemed to like him in late 2018 so he could well get a surprise (for us) call up, especially if player rotations are required due to the packed schedule.

There are plenty of other players in that queue though.

I agree with Scrag, I think we need to accept that we actually aren't playing as good as we think. A lot of our players are playing out of form and having shockers. Our only stand out game this year was the North game, where I could tell we were all on and thrashed a team that we usually have very close games with. This is just my pessimistic view though. I'm happy to be wrong.
We aren't playing amazing footy, but no-one else is either. Teams haven't been able to train properly. This portion of the year is purely about racking up wins, gradually growing into the season and dealing with the odd circumstances. We are going ok

Biggest issue for me this season is that we have won big or lost big. No close games.

Basically as a team, we are either on or we are off.

IIRC in all games, except against the ssints, we were still in touch at half time, and then fell away badly in the second half.

We just don't seem to be able to grind it out and stay in the game, and give ourselves a chance to win.

Plus, we really need to figure out how to shoot for goal from the left had forward pocket at Metricon. Terrible in both past 2 games.

That's why you are the King, King. In a year like this we are far better getting games into West et al than Lloyd. That ship has sailed and I also think he has a tendency to be a bit hungry...must be the Bartlett influence from Tigerland
From exposed form I would play West rather than Lloyd who has not shown a thing this year, regardless of age and getting time into West.

Pick the best balanced 22 no matter their age and you can both develop and win

No changes unless there are rests that need to happen. I would play McLean over Young but that almost certainly won't happen. There are a number of players I'd like more out of (Richards and Dale predominantly) but I'm not convinced we have better options ready to take over. Weightman hilariously shat himself every time he got the ball up the field but he showed more than enough potential to give him the chance to string some games together. Those goals were ridiculous.

Suckling to stay in the forward half for the rest of his career and also go back in time and spend the last three years there as well. This really is something that should have happened years ago.

Leaves us with something like:
FB: Williams - Keath - Crozier
HB: Johannisen - Cordy - Daniel
C: Hunter - Bontempelli - Smith
HF: Vandermeer - Weightman - Suckling
FF: Dale - Bruce - Wallis
R: English - Liberatore - Macrae
I: Wood - Lipinski - Richards - Young/McLean

Cordy and Bont both to spend some time forward but I don't expect us to play a true CHF. No doubt we will name Cordy forward again though so it looks better on the team sheet.

I can see another few changes this week, the forecast 9 games in 6 weeks means we have to be smart and rest players and expose others where and when we can. It's going to be interesting how all clubs go about this over the next month and a half, get this right and there could be a flag in it.... It's that open imo.
If we can get to finals and introduce Naughton/Dunkley/Dureay/Jong into the mix anything can happen.

How much time does Bont need to spend in the midfield anymore? No doubt it's his best position but I think Macrae, Dunkley, Smith and Libba could cover the majority of time in there as they also all prefer to be in the guts.

I get the feeling that upon Dunkley's return we might see Bont spend only 30% of gametime in the middle. Bonts in the unfortunate position of being the best forward out of the lot of them so he might play 3rd tall forward/high half forward and then pinch hit in the middle.

Haha, thank you. I got slammed amongst my friendship group for saying this. Not surprising for a first gamer but everyone (commentators included) wanted to pretend he did no wrong. Definitely excited by what he did up forward though.

BT screaming about Weightman doing everything right while he shanked two easy kicks (the second after playing on from a mark while standing next to the man on the mark for...a reason???) was a personal highlight.

(Note: yes, I rate Weightman very much. This is not a slight on him, it will take a while to find the pace of the game.)

On the club website, Josh Bruce did a video walking around the hub, and bumped into Fergus. Bruce almost seemed surprised to see him! (Not really, but was funny seeing him pop up out of nowhere, when he's been virtually invisible.)

There's the issue right there. BT is almost a parody of McAveney, who is pretty much nothing but a parody of himself, and adds absolutely nothing to the call these days. In the old Ch7 days (80s) when Skilton was special commentator, he actually picked up nuances in play without the benefit of today's numerous cameras, and paired with Sandy Roberts for a bit of colour, left most of today's 'commentators' for dead.

Edit: Richards was oblivious to nuances too, just stated the obvious, or often had no idea as well.

Yeah I think it's perfectly fine to say a first game player was a bit panicked.

That play on was the one I was mainly referring to. Barely even looked up before he banged it on the boot, he had both time and space and it went right to an Essendon player. I don't think he expected the mark to stick tbh. Those goals had me frothing though, and that's what he's in the team for. And composure will come with exposure.

Yeah he's got some tricks, that's for sure. First game composure or not, I'm very excited.

I think the part that I liked most was something Bruce pointed out - that he didn't even seem to notice getting crunched as he kicked that second goal, like it didn't even seem to register for him.
