Yep by picking out one example you have succesfully dismissed any argument the umpires were bad.

My favorite was the commentators fawning over Grundy "taking Ryders leap away by going up early." So someone jumps into someone before the ball gets there to block a player jumping and we're supposed to be impressed?

Did Grundy touch the ball in his early leap? No. Was he actually going for the ball? No.
He never goes for the ball, he just does whatever he can get away with in impeding his opponent. He gets in their way and doesn't actually go for the ball himself, he pushes them away from the drop zone, he puts an arm over their arm to prevent them lifting it to mark (a la Silvagni v Salmon).
Time the umpires looked seriously at this. They don't allow you to "spoil" in any way front on, unless you are going for the ball yourself and make no contact. Why so much leeway when you are not actually going for the ball when you are not front on?

Sorry for the intrusion. I thought Hurley and Heppell were very impressive.

Heppell has been a star since his first game, but his work rate and grunt work has been excellent since your captain's injury. We've got a few grunters in our midfield who all had a turn on him but he just carried on with his game.

Serious question. What do you make of their respective hairstyles?

I think the most blatantly obvious free kick that was paid ALL night was the last one Goodes received for his shot on goal.

Manhandled by Hooker? yes! there? Absolutely!
How about you pay it down the other end to Jake Carlisle who received much the same treatment in an early marking contest.

(worth noting, it was the same disgraceful umpire on both occasions so hardly an umpire interpretation)

Ted Richards had Ryder in a headlock 20m out from goal..."Play On".

Two things that need to be addressed.

Kick ins were terrible last night.

Oppisition teams rebound way too easily from our inside 50s.

The first one was particularly last night. The second one has been the case for quite a while now. It's frustrating that they can't lock the ball in their forward 50.

Agree about the kick ins. Sydney took theirs quickly almost every time, not allowing us to set up a zone defence. We, on the other hand, had no options most of the time and ended up kicking long, and when we did, they got to the fall of the ball quicker than us.

Just the latest total failure to fire in the first quarter against a good side followed by a third quarter come back.

Things happen for a reason.

Sydney are not good at the contest because they are harder at the ball than anyone else. They are good because they outnumber their opponents all over the ground. Sydney players don't get around the ground using a magical device. It is call hard running.

This is why Collingwood look so bad at the moment. I remember watching that game and being amazed at how shit their running was.

Good running means more players at the contest so you can flick it around more to get a dude who has a second or two to look for a good option to kick to. It also means that there is often an outrider to pass to.

....

Anyway I only watched a bit of the first half and didn't give a shite after that. It was one of the ugliest games of footy I have seen. I've never been so keen to take up another offer over a bombers game before!

Was it better than the game? worth it

It was frustrating to see our players caught on their heals so often. Sydney are very good but they are also very predictable with how they spread from contests, particularly in the back half. We weren't awake to this at all.

Bit of a common theme now.

We've come out with our dick between our legs against Sydney (twice), Hawthorn & Geelong. Sides that we've beaten collectively 4 times in the last 6 years!! Then we come out in the 2nd half & got a rattle on but fall inevitably short. I argue these mobs have us beaten before we run out!!

Stanton & Goddard were ordinary again. No way we're to beat top sides if our so called top liners put in nothing performances.

LIFT!!

Normally I hate losing Friday night games so much more but for some reason I don't really care this morning. When you know something is going to happen, it is easier to handle. Swans are going to get treated well by the umpires, our forwards will be held and payed nothing, their midfielders will duck their heads and be rewarded and Goodes will get looked after.

All in all, 4 goals is not too bad. Take it and move on to Richmond and the hopefully the return of Jobe, piggy and Joe in 2-3 weeks time.

They are just so much better than us. As ****ed as the COLA situation is, it's not what makes them perennial top four contenders. I didn't really want to win last night. It would have been a victory for mediocrity.

Glad to read it wasn't just me switching off, I just cannot watch those types of games anymore, I hear this morning we were apparently trying to tie up the game much like the Hawks did last week & then there's other factors such as the wind, that joke of a footy ground, that several of our players were playing like busted's early, umpires (didn't watch long enough to make comment on the umps), but I would rather they open the game up & get flogged by 10 goals than have to watch that shit last night that was masquerading as football.

Okay, how about Myers blazing out of defence about 2 minutes later, resulting in a McGlynn goal? Or Hooker manhandling Tippett in the first quarter? Dempsey kicking straight into Goodes' lap in the first? There are countless ways we played dumb football last night so to blame the umpires is just stupid. Sydney were in front the entire game, to win games of football you need to be in front at some point in time.

Remember how we laughed at Adelaide fans about blaming the umps earlier in the season?

I only caught the second and last quarter on tv. Was the umpiring so bad throughout that it actually cost us the game?

It was so bad it would have stopped us winning it if we really came to play

Not even close.

Inability to go with Sydney on the "spread" (our players don't seem to understand that there is more to bottling up a game than just getting numbers behind the ball - you need to run hard back and forward if you want to win the match).

Really poor use of the footy under moderate pressure being applied by the Swans.

We are an intensely ****ing lazy and/or stupid football team.

I don't mind if the game ties up around the ball when the ground is big enough that when it breaks that leads to more space.... seeing more players are in the one area. However, the SCG didn't allow that at all.

Also Essendon has looked better with Colyer finding form and Myers + Heppell stepping up some more ... however, until Hibberd and Watson get back with some touch we're an ordinary side. Melk playing ahead of J Merrett this year is probably important.
