When in the 80s? Victoria routinely didnt take it seriously because so many coaches restricted their players from being released to play.
Here is a link showing the 3 games between Vic, SA and WA in 1983 around the peak of State of Origin. Maurice Rioli played only v Victoria, but was BOG and named in the AA team from those 3 matches. You can see looking through the lists all the best players of the era who weren't injured were playing.
