Review Rd 20 Review - Freo Shown Up by Melbourne

Looks like we are an also ran team this year. That's ok, aim is still a finals win.

Talking points that arent just shitting on everyone
  • Logue continues to be good up forwad just has no confidence going for goal due to being a backman
  • Some weird posts shitting on Henry in the game thread when he's made a noticeable jump forward. Starting to look like a player and he generally makes good happens and was one of the few that had a bit of creativity
  • Was great to see Sonny back to close to his best
  • Forwardline continues to be a massive concern. We've really lost the run and dare we had at the start of the year and I'm not sure if it's other teams planning for us better or a personal thing

Positives
  • Aish is a gem. (Let's not mention his goal kicking)
  • Baeshaw is just adorable. Give him a 7 year contract. (Let's not mention his goal kicking)
  • Hayden Young is becoming a man in front of us. (Let's not mention his goal kicking)
  • Will Brodie is such a good kick. Under rated. (Let's not mention his goal kicking)
  • We will play finals this year, it's a long season and we are tracking upward. (Let's not mention goal kicking)
  • The list is very young. (Let's not mention goal kicking)

Negatives

Ruck infringements
- Sean Darcy is constantly giving frees away for blocking. Why? This needs to be addressed, I don't understand why he is getting pinged for standing his ground while opposition ruckman jump into him. Gawn did the same thing to Lobb in the 3rd but it was fine?

Wing transition
  • Up and under kicks to packs don't seem to create a stoppage, more often than not we give the ball away and the opposition beat us on the rebound.
  • Why do we kick those held up wing possessions so high. It's like we are trying to hit the roof.

Forward line
  • people used to complain about us flooding the D50 with Ross Lyon, we are doing the same now so when we transition we have no one to kick to.
  • We can't create separation, there doesn't appear to be any blocking between players to put defenders on the back foot. Where is our Bailey Fritsch?
  • We need players who are goal kickers. Logue for all his positives is not a goal kicker first kind of player. Who at Freo is?

Defence
  • Alex Pearce looked like a horse being born sometimes. Just couldn't keep his feet and seemed to be out of position a fair bit.
  • Kickouts are still ugly.

Others
  • the AFL commentary is a disgrace.
  • Umpiring was pretty bad but it was consistent for the most part. We didn't lose because of it.
  • Sekem is s**t.

Was thinking you guys were getting a rough run with the umpires and noticed that flog rosebury was umpiring. Makes sense. He did the same to us against Essendon a few weeks ago. Every time freo gets momentum it’s a free kick the other way, so demoralising for the players.

Hear hear.

Henry looks solid now. Can hold his own in a tackle. He is building very nicely.

And yes, Walters was very good on a very tough night.

+ Henry had a promising game, finally starting to show good signs

+ Young, what an absolute gun, we have our next Hill possibly better.

+ Walker, looks very daring and dangerous when he backs himself in and runs

+ Backline looks set for another 5 years with the combination of Young, Chapman, Clark, Walker, Logue, Cox.

+ Aish was brilliant and completely shut Oliver out of the game

+ Brayshaw needs captainacy ASAP, even on his bad nights he never gives up trying.

~ JL out-coached once again with no plan B, he has no idea what to do when under pressure

~ JL is to scared to swing the axe on our passengers.

~ Frederick, absolute one trick pony that applies no defensive pressure, his good and bad are way to far apart.

~ Shultz, has had a terrible month and should be dropped. .

~ Colyer, absolutely cooked and should be delisted at years end.

~ Pearce may be the most overrated Fremantle player ever, is a serious spud.

~ Darcy continues his incredibly mediocre season.

~ Acres wanting more on his contract? Piss off mate.

How trash is our forward line? This is what happens when you try to moneyball a forward line with late draft picks instead of actually investing into our forward line.

I mean 5 goals for an entire is just an indictment on all our players, coaches and list management.

I said it in the game thread but Alex Pearce is the most overrated Freo player of all time. Would rather Logue play back.

Big reality check. All the talk earlier in the season was how Melbourne-like our stats were.

Turns out Melbourne are still much better at being Melbourne than us come the business end of the season at the moment. May not be the case in a year or two though.

We can either slash our wrists (like many will on here no doubt), or regroup and win two of our last three to get a home final and make an assault on the finals from there.

Get stuffed 3D Jumper... burn it! Get stuffed Friday Night football, never play well.

Bring on warm Sunday afternoon football. Bring on confident attacking football.

Agreed with those who mentioned the forward line, I'm not confident Amiss will develop into the forward we need in time, the answer is obviously through a trade.

Those moronic commentators taking a quick poll during the last quarter about whether Freo can win a flag with its current list, all agreeing probably not. Talk about a classic example of herd mentality, I wish they did the same poll a few months ago, likely all agreed a flag was in the future. That's not to say they're incorrect to suggest there are missing pieces, but it is not a thought-out opinion when it shifts with the herd and recent results.

The miss pieces are clearly a forward and experience, I've got every faith that this current squad will be challenging, but flags take a lot of luck and timing as well.

Well done Demons. Too good for us. We clearly lack class up forward but we'll come good once we build a decent forwardline. Our midfield is exciting with what we have out there plus what we have building at Peel. Same with our defence, although Pearce is a real concern and we don't have any obvious answers to improve on him - need to fix that during the off season too.

Negatives

1. We can't kick out of the back half, or switch with enough speed to get out.
2. Our forwards can not get the ball to ground. They don't want it bad enough.
Taberner does not force his way through enough, Lobb is s**t, Logue does not want it, Frederick, Schultz are useless and can't bring the ball to ground. Walters does an ok job at this, for his height he is brilliant.
3. Our delivery to our forwards is s**t.
4.. We are not defending well enough, and teams can get the ball out of our back half too easy.
5. Our small forwards offer almost nothing.
6. We snap around the corner too much on the wing, when we have extra numbers at the contest. I don't see this working.
7. Longmuir - has not adjusted his game plan. Needs to find another option - maybe this will next year.
8. Our mids are one dimensional, all good inside, but no elite skills and no top end pace. Serong, Brodie, Erasmus, Mundy lately, Brayshaw. We need to look outside the box in the next 2 years.
9. Lacked class in our forward line. This is why everyone wants Sturt playing

Positives.

Henry was good. Thought he worked hard all day.
Aish, Petrecca, Jordon and Andrew Brayshaw got 405 points, very handy for my draft side.
Not many other positives.
