ESSENDON has surged into the top-eight after securing a third win from four starts with a 20-point victory over Fremantle.

Despite starting in the competition two years after their opponents, the Bombers showed up the Dockers in an impressive display at Windy Hill on Sunday.

In an otherwise tight contest, the difference between the sides at Windy Hill on Sunday was almost solely down to Bonnie Toogood, who kicked her first to give the Bombers the lead in the opening quarter over the wayward Dockers.

The Dockers returned fire in the second, taking a narrow 4 point lead into half time.

Toogood kicked her second major after the break to regain the lead for the Dons, with the Bombers piling on another 4 goals including Bomber favourite Georgia Nanscawen's first AFLW goal.

It's been a long, interrupted career for Georgia Nanscawen after debuting for North Melbourne in 2019, before being delisted at the end of the season.

Three sparkling years for Essendon at state league level followed before the Bombers named her their first signing - and Co-Captain (?!) - for their inaugural AFLW team, but a knee injury saw her miss the season.

So when Nanscawen kicked her first national league goal on Sunday afternoon it was a moment to savour for the 31-year-old, her teammates and the Bombers faithful in the stands.

The Bombers ran out overall winners 7.8 (50) to 4.6 (30).

Finishing with 21 disposals, nine tackles and two critical goals, Toogood was key in the Bombers’ second-half blitz that led to their 20-point victory.

The 25-year-old has 7 goals for the season and has arguably been Essendon's best player in each of the first four rounds, and has shot up to 9th on the Coaches Votes leaderboard, with 22 votes after 4 rounds.

Toogood spoke after the game:

"It's unbelievable here at Windy, to play a heartland venue, to see the Reynolds Stand packed like that, it's fantastic.

Us engaging Essendon fans of women's footy is phenomenal and it's good to get the win, that's for sure.

We needed to bring it (the game) back on our terms in the stoppage and start getting it moving our way and then we could get our forwards to go to work."

The Bombers find themselves in the Top 9, after being comfortably the best performed of the four new teams last season, finishing with four wins and well ahead of Sydney, Hawthorn and Port Adelaide.

The Bombers finished 10th last year but could be on track to make the top-eight almost halfway through this season.

Essendon faces Collingwood on Saturday, just hours before the AFL Grand Final.

ESSENDON 7.8 (50)

FREMANTLE 4.6 (30)

GOALS: Toogood 2, Vogt 2, Radford, Nanscawen, Doonan
BEST: Toogood, Wales, Prespakis, Alexander, Cain

Essendon has made two changes for its round five clash with Collingwood.

Forwards Daria Bannister and Amber Clarke will return to the mix after missing last week's game through injury.

Midfielder Joanne Doonan has been omitted, while Sophie Van De Heuvel will miss after suffering a concussion in the win over Fremantle.

The Bombers and Pies will square off at Punt Road Oval on Saturday at 11:05am to kick off a massive day.

Unfortunately the girls are starting to show the same inconsistencies as the guy's.

Hoping they bounce back next game.

It’s still a very uneven competition, Adelaide and Collingwood have been around for much longer than us and getting a spread of talent across clubs with these progressive expansions has been difficult on multiple fronts.

I thought yesterdays game was a very good example of the women’s product as a watchable, marketable event in its own right though, with good skills, executable game plans, heros and villains and inconsistent umpiring, that deserves to be treated with respect.

I reckon AFLW is a very good product now. At least the matches I’ve seen this year.

The ones I've seen have been good, but I only watch Essendon. Couldn't speak for what happens when Adelaide plays Sydney though.
I hadn’t watched a game since 2017 but have caught several matches at the gym.

It’s unrecognisable.

Not really . We are pretty predictable as far as having a decent crack at it and contested footy. Problem is it is a new squad and we lack a bit of outside run and the good sides are a level above where we are at now.

I wouldn't mind trying to get Lin from Collingwood, covers the ground well and has endurance.

We really should have taken a stronger lead into quarter time in this game. Our ball movement was better and cleaner and gave us better quality looks at goal. The Pies' were lucky to get theirs against the flow but were emboldened once they got through.
