Win this and we should be finals bound.

Just had a go at the ladder predictor, given the Dons percentage I think they'll need 7 wins to get there. Must win this week and then one of Carlton or GC to make it.

Here’s The West Coast’s coach explaining why they lost last week…

If he'd mentioned they also have a game against Adelaide coming up he could possibly have made an argument of playing too many games against the elite teams. Instead he went for: we're bad so we shouldn't have to play the good teams.

Might get some percentage back this week, will have to see. These girls have a ruthlessness that the men’s team does not, so we can realistically hope for a cut-throat display this weekend

It's a whinge to end all whinges and a very defeatist attitude. The club should be reading him the riot act after that display.

Port are bloody ordinary and they've played 3 of the top 4 sides, they've just sucked it up which is what needs to be done sometimes.

Should mention, as part of WARF Radio's coverage on Sunday through the AFL website and apps, we'll have Jacqui Vogt on as a guest from 4:35pm during our pre-game show.

If there's a question you'd like asked to Jacqui, let me know here :)

Tell her hi from us! Ask her what she thinks of the trade period in December, and what her ideal scenario is for season timing with regard to starting at the end of the men's H&A and the increases in AFLW games in coming years. Would she want to start earlier, like at the mens bye?

Essendon are hitting their stride in the 2023 AFLW season, sitting fifth on the ladder after back-to-back wins and in touch with the top four ahead of a potential maiden finals appearance.

The Bombers' 17-point win in the Dreamtime clash began with a battle between league superstars Maddy Prespakis and Monique Conti – the Tiger providing plenty of speed around the ground and darting around her opponents, while the sharp hands of Maddy P in the stoppages was unimpeded by the close attention of tagger Sarah Hosking.

The Bombers leveraged the advantage, piling on 6 goals from six individual goalscorers by the main break, including a first AFLW career goal from very excited long-time VFLW Bomber Renee Tierney, who had missed her first shot at goal and taken some clever positioning to earn herself another chance. and then promptly left the field for treatment after a heavy hit in the preceding marking contest.

“I shanked the first one, so I was like ‘I’ve got to get this second one’,” Tierney said.

“I wasn’t sure if I had the distance or not, but I just trusted myself and went through it and thought ‘just think of the feeling if you do’.”

By half-time, the starting trio of Maddy Prespakis, Georgia Nanscawen and Steph Cain had the clearance count at 21-5 in Essendon's favour, while Richmond favoured strong rebound off half-back and high forwards pushing up to the contest in an effort to contain and curtail Essendon's coalface dominance.

The clearance differential continued to grow in the third term despite Richmond's inside presence, with the Bombers getting a heap of ball and spreading well to find paths to goal. Amelia Radford providing some important run and carry in a blistering display for the Bombers, racking up a career high 18 disposals on the wing.

“Our contested possession, winning the ball and backing ourselves in to spread and play our really aggressive, attacking football with run off half-back (was important)”, Radford said.

“The connection between the lines has really built over the pre-season, and once we get that ball going it’s hard to stop.”

The Dons' firepower proved too much for the under-strength Tigers and a late goal from Sophie Alexander from a tight angle to secure Essendon's lead into the final term.

The final quarter saw coach Nat Wood send Bonnie Toogood further up the ground to negate some of Richmond's spread, with the star forward putting her team first and combining with her co-captain Steph Cain in the back half to launch a 'coast to coast' play.

Essendon young gun Amber Clarke danced around her opponent on the wing and kicked it long to fellow rising star Paige Scott, who got rid of her opponent to run into the open goal square and convert.

The well-rounded team performance sees Essendon on the same number of wins as fourth-placed Brisbane, but came at a cost with livewire forward Daria Bannister suffering an ACL tear in her right knee late in the fourth term.

ESSENDON has made two changes for its AFLW side to take on West Coast this Sunday, with forward Daria Bannister out for the remainder of the season with an ACL tear, and Dani Marshall omitted.

Jo Doonan and Ash Van Loon return to the side, while Renee Tierney will play her second game for the season after impressing in her season debut against the Tigers, while star forward Bonnie Toogood needs two goals to hit the 50 goal milestone.

Last time we met, Essendon came out firing with a five goal to nil first quarter, with first-year ruck Steph Wales kicking three goals in the first half, including a running effort from 40m, a long-range set shot and another from a pack mark in the goal square.

Gun midfielders Maddy Prespakis (22 disposals and two goals) and Steph Cain (15 and four clearances) were instrumental, while forward Daria Bannister was strong in the air and sharp with her kicking, booting two goals.

Jacqui Vogt (15 and a goal) spent time at both ends of the ground and was impressive, while draftee Paige Scott booted three goals.

WEST COAST 4.8 (32) – ESSENDON 13.6 (84)

INJURY LIST
Essendon will be without Georgia Gee for at least three weeks after the forward suffered a calf injury last week.

Head of Medical Services Megan Smith said Gee is progressing well with her rehabilitation.

“Unfortunately, Georgia was a late out from our round seven team after suffering a calf injury at training,” Smith said.

“We are hoping to have her back running by the end of the week with the aim of a round 10 return.”

Lily-Rose Williamson is also getting closer to returning, with the 19-year-old cleared to integrate back into full training and will likely play in a scrimmage match over the coming weeks.

The Bombers will be without Daria Bannister for the remainder of the season after scans confirmed yesterday a ruptured ACL.

GWS and Port did us a massive favour yesterday by not letting Carlton and GC win. Massive game now, can be 2 games and % ahead of 9th if we win!
