Could argue we spent pick 9 on Moore, 31(?) on McLarty 6 on Scharenberg, 18 on Grundy and 29 on Kelly in recent years, so it’s not like we completely avoid talls early in the ND.

The only actual genuine KPP in that group are Moore, Kelly and McClarty (who missed most his draft year).

Shaz is 191cm and whilst capable as a pinch hitter KPD is more suited to medium talls and as a 3rd in type.
I would also like to see him trialled down forward when more defenders return, as the club seems to have forgot he was very capable at both ends of the ground as a junior.

Grundy a ruck that really isnt relevant to KPP discussions also he was our clubs first ruck taken inside top 20 for a very long time. It also required a stupid amount of circumstances for him to fall in our lap as a no brainer pick. Widely tipped top 3 pick pre draft.

So that's 3 KPP selections inside top 30 over 7 years.
The 3 years prior we traded out of the early drafts, 09 our first pick was L.Ball @30 no kpp drafted but trades got us flag ruck (jolly),.
2010 entered very late no kpp.
Entered 2011 draft at pick 50 and tried to hit up late KPPs with Paine and Gault.

So really going back 10 years we have picked 3 KPP up inside top 30. Rest have been long shots.

Obviously not good reasons.

Alternative is they sit on a list while they work on those issues whether they're real or perceived. What was Mihocek when we drafted him, 24-25? Can you imagine how overjoyed the masses would be if we'd drafted him in his draft year and he took that long to get his shot.

You assume he had issues. Perhaps it was the recruiters that had the issues. Mihochek may have flourished in an AFL environment from a young age and played 100+ games by now. Recruiters get many of their decisions wrong.

A substantial number of guys drafted in their draft year don't flourish in an AFL environment but sure lets just assume players who aren't considered up to it will do better, I mean restricted list sizes shouldn't really be a factor.

James Podsiadly (apologies for the spelling) is a case in point of a draftee who we tried, but cut... we all know his story years later... so hard to judge at times.

I'm pretty sure JPod had a couple of years on Essendon's rookie list before we drafted him. He was essentially taken in his draft year so that was 2 clubs had him for 3 years before he was sent back to the VFL and eventually redrafted by the Cats as a 28-29 year old. Clubs just can't carry blokes for that long in a hope that things might turn around. It's when players like him, Mihocek and Sam Collins show consistent form at the lower level they get these mature age chances, if they're lucky.

That would mean the Talls should not be Drafted at 18 as they can take awhile to come good

Pretty tough to predict how quickly players will develop so take them when they're available if you think they're good enough, trust your systems to develop them.

Fantastic Mover but still can't read the Ball well as seems lot of Times he is out of Postion or not in right spot.

Though not a Big Shock from Missing 6 Years of footy.

When he gets his Feel Back of the Game he will have a Big Game

Yeah look would be a long shot still to play. You can’t read to much into that game though playing the beat team in the comp undermanned in the driving rain

Worst Kind of Weather for a Tall who has played 4-5 Games from a 6 Year Lay Off.

Did a Few Good Things in Heavy Traffic

Off the back of 6 possessions in the VFL?
The bar isn't high
  • Madgen - 12 possessions vs Geelong, called up for his first game in 2019
  • Varcoe - 8 possessions vs Werribee (injured late), missed the next week injured and was recalled
  • Crocker - 17 possessions vs Werribee, called up for his first game in 2019
  • Thomas - 11 possessions vs Williamstown, missed the next week injured and was recalled
  • Appleby - 13 possessions vs Williamstown, called up for his first game in 2019
  • Daicos - 16 possessions vs Frankston, and was recalled

* Varcoe played a better second game the first time he was dropped, not given that chance the second time
* Crocker, Madgen and Daicos all had a better block of form behind them, albeit Crocker's was much better earlier.
