Universal Love Welcome to Hawthorn: Jarman Impey extends to 2026!

I think Impey will start off on the wing next year. I’ll be surprised if he played as a small forward given the club already have enough on the list as it is. He’s got the speed and skill set to play as an outside midfielder.

Many have questioned whether he has the tank to play there though.

A MID-YEAR move to the half-back flank reinvigorated Impey as a draft prospect. It was a positional change that highlighted the traits most already knew – his pace and smarts – but revealed a few more.

Impey made the Vic Country under-16s side as a half-forward, then kicked nine goals in 12 games for the Murray Bushrangers last season before a double break of his hand interrupted his progress. But the switch during the final game of this year's NAB AFL Under-18 Championships showed Impey's natural flair for the role. He was one of his side's best players in that game against Vic Metro and took that form into the latter stages of the TAC Cup season for the Bushrangers, helping them to a finals appearance.

Impey made the level-one AIS-AFL Academy squad in 2012 but was cut from the second intake, and used the disappointment in a positive way, determined to show recruiters his skills.

STRENGTHS
Impey has an amazing change of direction. He can be running with the ball, see a tackler coming towards him then take a quick step and be out in the open again. Half-back looks his preferred home, and he makes life a lot easier for the players up the ground with his foot skills. Often Impey sees things others can't, turns sharply and starts the forward movement. At October's NAB AFL Draft Combine, he ran 2.96 seconds for the 20-metre sprint. He's also a powerful, strong unit who is very good in one-on-one contests. His quick thinking is reflected in testing, too. At the combine he had the fastest reaction time of any player, and was second in the decision-making speed.

WEAKNESSES
In the championships only 35 per cent of Impey's disposals were won in contested situations, and though that ratio was more even for the Bushrangers, it's still an area he can work on. He played in the middle against the Eastern Ranges later in the year, and was matched against Mitch Honeychurch, who just knew his way around the contest a bit better.

PLAYS LIKE
It is easy to see some Chris Yarran attributes in Impey, in his ability to run off half-back or just as comfortably cause some damage across half-forward. Either spot suits his talents.

DRAFT RANGE
It wouldn't be a surprise to see Impey come in to the top 20. If not, somewhere between then and 35 should be his range.

BOTTOM LINE
A highly talented player with a few damaging streaks. Offers something different: a mixture of pace, hardness, class and vision.

I don't recall him playing in the midfield for Port. Has been more a small defender / forward hasn't he?
Yep. Just responding to posts suggesting he is an endurance athlete that will provide run to compensate for the loss of Hartung. He is quick and we will use that out of defence I expect.

Will play defence rather than wing. Probably spend some time up forward too but I think we see him as a defender first.

Seeing him in defence wouldn’t shock me - will likely free up Burton to move into the midfield or push forward. Sicily has to stay back - he’s an absolute revelation as an intercepting defender.

So I asked the guy's on the Port board whether Impey had ever lined up in the centre square and apparently he never has.

I found this surprising given he has the ability to win the hard ball and break away from a stoppage with his evasive skills and pace.

I could see him at a centre bounce once or twice a quarter doing good things.

I believe he'd provide run off half-back. His tank isn't Smith or Hartung level, but it's not horrible.

He's not the type of player you'd have covering as much ground as a Smith or a Hill. Those guys have to cover so much space.

He's definitely a half back flanker for mine; we'll potentially see Morrison taking up on the wing in the pre-season or early on in the regular season if my sources are correct.

What is Burton’s endurance like? He didn’t do a beep test during his combine. Would be interesting to see if he played any outside midfield this year.

Hard to know as I don’t think he did the time trial either. I know he believes he can be a full time mid so let’s hope he has the required assets. Who am I kidding, Burton has all the assets he needs for anything he wants to do ;)

I just love the idea of Jarman using his run from half back and that allowing one of Sicily, Burton or Hardwick going forward - my personal preference would be Burton getting time between the outside midfield and the half forward line. Hardwick and Sicily May want to go forward and kick goals - but they’re too bloody good in defence!

Think Burton will go forward. The others are best off in defence.

Not all that surprising when you consider the breadth of inside ball winners they have had in their midfield.

Probably be a bit more opportunity for him to do it in our side. At least until young guys like Worpel crack the best 22. Then we’ll probably see him play a similar role to what Puopolo has.

anyhow - i will take a christmas break because everybody is disgruntled.
This is a timely reminder that Jesus died for all of our sins because people didn't like to hear the truth.
Merry Christmas and God bless Hawthorn supporters.
BEST CHRISTMAS EVER!

Nowhere near good enough for a mid role.

In addition, I epxect with his knee issues, the club will be slow to put lots of miles into him.

I would give him a year as a third tall down back and up forward, increasing his GPS kms from last year and see how he goes. Give him the odd centre bounce when the game is won or lost and get him used to it, with the aim of, if his body holds up, a bit more time there in 2019, the way Rough plays.
