Some weeks we played 5 which was ridiculous. Schultz, Walters, Switkowski, Frederick, with Banfield / Emmett / Sturt

We need to play 3, a genuine medium forward, a spot we have no depth and no quality, and 3 talls (Jackson, Amiss, Treacy).
I would call Banners & Sturt mediums. They both play like them and are medium height.

Banners was at his best when we had Amiss, Treacy and Jackson, playing a smaller (medium / small) role rather than hit up tall. He had genuinely good games across the last 24 months. Mostly the crumbing left foot snap he goes back to fairly often with reasonable success. He’s not a top quality medium though, neither is Sturt. It would be great to add one.

Sturt is.

If he can stay fit he'll silence a lot of the doubters this year

Switowski playing more forward minutes would be the first option if Emmett doesn’t get fit for round 1.
Delean would get a gig if Walters or Switowski aren’t available.

Sturt, Treacy, Frederick
Walters, Amiss, Switowski

Jackson, JOM and Erasmus all rotated through.
Sorry but Switkowski is a horrendous small forward. Just doesn’t kick enough goals. Can’t just be in the team for forward pressure.
Rather Delean and let Switkowski play his wandering role.

Switta is more of a midfielder than a small forward though. Delean is there to replace the hole left by Schultz. Simpson/Stanley are the ones who will put pressure on Switta's position.

Agree. Switta excels at stoppages and being amongst the contest. Just doesn’t have the goal nous. More like high half forward pushing up the ground.

Sturt ain’t top quality yet as he’s only played 18 games. If Sturt decides he wants to become a regular AFL player-he’s capable of averaging 1.5 gls a game imo.

Idk if anyone realizes this but Tommy is quite tall for a small forward which is exciting. He is listed at 186 but I reckon he could be slightly taller as I've stood next to him a few times.

That’s what I like about him replacing Schultz, we had 4 smalls in Walters, Schultz, Switowski and Frederick, 1 medium Sturt or Banfield (they hardly ever played together) and 3 talls (triple J’s).
Having Emmett or Ras replace Schultz means we still have 3 smalls and 3 talls but also 2 mediums.

In the long term maybe, I think he has all the tools to succeed but it is too early to tell. I think some people are underestimating the loss of Schultz on this board. He is a hugeee loss and it really hurts seeing him in other colours.

Switta massively o/rated at Freo. Does f all, and gets champion data points.
Kicks 2 goals every 5 games, meh.
Typical Freo player, o/rated and ends up with donuts at the end of his career.
Emmett I hope has the goods, but heaps of pressure on the young man
Just doesn’t kick enough goals or games where he can get 1 or 2 even trying hard. Schulz always managed to get a couple without being involved in the game as much as as Switta does.

Emmett has far too much pressure immediately. If he kicks 20-30 that’s a bonus.
Small forwards are going to limit Fremantle and making top 8. It’ll be obvious all season.

Emmett is no certainty to play despite some nice work past season. I struggle to see how both he and Erasmus squeeze in there. Going to be an interesting preseason.

Switta has those games where he just opens our ball movement up being dynamic in traffic and making good decisions with his passes.

If he played like that every week he would be a star of the game, but unfortunately they are the exception.

Definitely doesn’t kick enough goals, and the rest of our forwards don’t kick enough to carry someone who isn’t much of a goal threat.

It’ll be interesting to see if Freo play him deep with Shultz out, Switta’s kicking is so short range anything over 20m and you don’t know if he will make the distance, especially snapping which is a key skill for a small forward.

Still, sort of guy you hope can kick on and be damaging in a better side. As our KPFs become more of a threat, he may get less attention with oppo defenders having to roll off, and his cleaness and quickness might generate more goals.

Depends a bit on how they pick the team, for example if Fyfe is still performing at last years level Ras should be in ahead of him.

My gut feel is we will pick by reputation, rather than what is in the teams best interests or for form.

Anyway Emmett needs high levels of fitness for his role, repeat sprints all game and lots of hitting bodies.

Sounds like he may not have the right prep to start the year based on that article.

Yes to all of that.

The management of both Fyfe and Erasmus are going to be interesting.

Opposite ends of their careers and both highly rated, but at the same time questionable if they are best 23. And questionable if they can both be in the side. And again, questions around the compatibility with JOM and Brodie.

Additionally, their role in the midfield is a little cloudy, and the temptation to play them as part time forwards will be there. That may squeeze Emmett's development even though he is more of a specialist in the forward role.

I think Emmett is competing with Switta more than anyone else for a position in the team as the designated pressure forward. Emmett's pressure in the two games he played at afl level was fantastic last season. He'd be my choice provided he gets some training under his belt before the season starts. I really like Erasmus as a half forward who rotates mid for only brief periods in a game. As a junior Erasmus impressed more playing forward than on ball. I also think Simpson is a genuine chance to play early on too. Here's some more highlights of his junior days. There's a lot of highlights for one game in the footage.

Emmett is a small forward, Switta is a small midfielder that rotates forward. Simpson is the perfect replacement for Switta.

Im quietly confident Emmett, Simpson and Erasmus will be massive surprise packets as forwards this season for Free and Sturt will also have an impact. Most would expect Sturt to be a better player with more opportunities but I'm tipping by the end of the season Erasmus, Emmett and Simpson will also be important. Im predicting all 4 players I've mentioned will move past switta.

They might but I'd rather stick natural forwards in the forwardline than pigeonholing mids there which we have always done as a club. Simpson, Erasmus and even Switta are not natural forwards but are mids that can rotate forward. We are starting to build the resemblance of a forwardline so I want to commit to that.

I'm not sure that is correct for Simpson. He seems a natural goal kicker. I like his range too.

We should probably take this to the Simpson thread lol but I think there's more to being a forward than being a good kick.

Switta finished equal 6th in our BnF this season. I'm pretty confident a 0 gamer and a 2 gamer are not going to move past him in any position.

Funnily enough as they were mostly battling for the same spot, I found that Sturt and Banfield worked quite well together when they played together
