If he could take one thing away from Sewell it’s the contested mindset where he would never let the other player give the ball back to the umpire, always had to win it even in a ball up, he was a beast in his prime
Desperately wanting to the win the ball is probably the most important trait for a contested mid for mine.

If you want the ball more than the other guy, you’ll win the ball more than the other guy.

Crazy, he was regarded as a beautiful kick of the ball... a lot of those memories we have of the skillful players from that era are a little false or a tad too rosy.

The one that looks just as good if not better is Johnny Platten, played almost like a modern footballer.

Dermott could win the ball though, in the air or on the ground he was next level

Next to Hodgey - my all time favourite Hawk.

The Sewell comparison for Maginness is a good benchmark for the next couple of seasons.
I suspect Finn has a much higher ceiling though.
He was a ball-winning mid who hit the scoreboard regularly at junior level, so the instincts and ability are there to become a match-winner.
He really could become a dominant midfielder who does it all.

First step is pretty much complete - defensive mid.
He has started winning more of the ball recently.
Next is to do it more consistently and scoring goals without losing any of the defensive capabilities he has developed.
Gonna be a beast!

Finn could genuinely be the guy who brings the tagger back into vogue. Considering the increase in votes from Brownlow Medal winners in recent years, it seems a good response to bring it back. Players getting 30+ votes a year just shows that they're being allowed off the chain too often.

Consider the type of match winning performances midfielders have had in the past couple of years too, Ling would have never allowed Shuey, Martin or Petracca to have the type of games they had in flags.

Sam has been the first one I have seen to correct identify the most damaging opposition player also.

I had never seen someone tag Langdon or Dawson before Finn did.

Reckon Sam would know, clubs had the best success against us when they tagged guys like Isaac Smith. Good to see Finn can do a job like that on a wingman, flanker and an inside mid.

What an elite piece of the puzzle for any coach, his rate of improvement in a season is really something, wish he had of hit that goal would of helped give him that extra praise.

As he builds into next year will be really interesting how his offensive side grows, but could see him completely nullifying his opponent and hurting him by winning his own ball.

Reckon that kicking will we completely different after that missed kick, seems to correct his errors rapidly.

Touk Miller is his biggest scalp yet.

Make no mistake Miller is one of the best few midfielders in the league - pace, toughness, clean skill, two-way running, scoreboard impact, inside and outside game. He's a complete midfielder.

Some stats for the game:

Finn helped keep him to his fourth lowest possession total this season.

Clearly his lowest uncontested possession count - only three for the game (next lowest was nine). That's his equal lowest EVER (not including one game where he was injured), and has only been equalled once in R12 back in 2016.

Clearly his lowest metres gained for the season - 82m. The next lowest this season was 193m, and prior to this game he was averaging 532.55m per game.

82m is Miller's lowest total since R22 back in 2018 (not including one game where he was injured).

Kept him to ZERO inside 50's, (for the first time since R12 in 2020). Prior to today he'd been averaging 5.95 per game.

It's unbelievable work. Finn has a combination of athletic qualities that make him an unbelievable match up for pretty much any non-KPP. He's big, strong, pacey and can run all day.

And who did Lingy often slaughter through his tagging? Sammy. Good point
