On reflection I am happy WC won because the Buckley love-in was reaching Rob Murphy levels of cringe.

One H&A win against a top 8 side (Melb). Double ups against Carlton, Freo, Brisbane and Gold Coast. Season-defining game was against the mighty Poort Adelaide.

Bloody hell, they haven't been that impressive.

Because finals don't count lol.

Talls in structure!

No player at Port would ever be allowed to be as one dimensional as Cox.

Be tall, stay forward mostly. Lead toward the carrier. Mark and kick straight if you can. That's all Mason.

Janus is getting a blood nose just thinking about it.

We could fill our team with a dozen 6'8 players and still looks like headless chickens.

It's fascinating really.

We kept Butcher around for years, refusing to cash in on him while he still had value (ie Ah Chee, Young = anything), because despite his kicking woes he had a high workrate and could take grabs, and would start each season with him before finding any excuse to relegate him.

Then we recruited the mature-ager in Eddy, who we knew had a questionable tank/workrate, but had very good forward craft and was Schulzesque from the setshot, and despite him helping us to look frighteningly structured in the first 3 rounds of 2017, put a bullet in him as well.

Meanwhile, 66 games of Jake Neade, and Charlie Dixon has been reduced to a packhorse returning Butcheresque levels of raw output - replete with random setshooting - despite being our franchise forward.

Maybe, just maybe, there's a reason we're the 13th best side of the past 4 seasons in peak terms?

Nahhhhhh...

Harder.
Longer.

Funny that the pick West Coast used on Sheed was traded to them by Collingwood, who used West Coast’s pick on Scharenberg.

Swings and roundabouts.

It’s unfathomable how our supposedly top 4 team has gone so far backwards while all these other clubs have overtaken us. So bloody frustrating and disappointing. I don’t care what anyone says, we looks years off it now.

Yesterday proved once and for all that we haven't just turned down an ideological blind alley, we've piloted the shuttle completely off course.

In attempting to absolve Baskley of blame, I've seen intellectual gymastics that would put a Stephen Hawking-Nadia Comenici hybrid to shame. We supposedly lack experience. Our battleship was sunk off the back of losing the halfback drive of Hartlett and Broadbent. Seasonal and in-game injuries. We're the only club ever to suffer them. And that's why our ball movement and scoring is as putrid as a Snowtown term deposit.

Taking nothing away from West Coast and Collingwood on the year, yesterday's teams weren't exactly the dynasties of Hawthorn and Geelong. Collingwood racked up a 5 goal lead on footy's biggest day in spite of their annual injury shitshow, and West Coast were famously missing Naitanui, Gaff, Sheppard and the hero of last year's final at Adelaide Oval, McKenzie. Off the back of the likes of Treloar tearing both hamstrings at once and Darling getting hurt when he was arguably the best player in the comp.

They still got there. And both slugged it out like champions.

We can piss and moan about Ryder's bung hip or Hartlett's ACL until the cows come home. If it's not now bleedingly obvious to everyone that our football department dun goofed with this data warehouse bollocks (among other things), well s**t.

If returning safely to Earth is the premiership, we've just overtaken the Voyager probes and will be coming up upon Matthew "don't let me leave, Murph!" McConnaughey directly.

I like to think our JLT win over you blokes really got the ball rolling this year :)

Looking forward to you going 6-0 against us at Adelaide Oval next year due to our Coachtronic3000 spitting out a series of 0's & 1's that prevent us from converting field dominance into goals.

Adelaide media running with a "We were integral to this flag"

Lel.

This is accurate. Our consecutive displays of lily-livered shitness in close games would've done wonders for West Coast's confidence.

They didn’t play Gold Coast twice, but they did play Richmond & Essendon twice which is 4 tough games right there and they won two of those.

Melb got the fairytale narrative treatment leading into finals this year, it was unashamedly hammy, melodramatic tripe the way the media was carrying on.

The brave narrative for Vic teams has been steadily growing since 2016. They keep making it a sticking point instead of being impartial, objective commentators in a national sporting code.

On seasons reflection how good is de goey went from who? to holy s**t! In 1 off season , just has a killer about him

remember when Wingard had a statistically better season?
what happened to that guy.

Essendon aren't that tough for most other sides.

If the last few GF's have taught us anything it's that teams outside the 8 are not as far away as we think. This time last year Collingwood and WCE supporters all thought they were years away. This time two years ago it was Richmond supporters despairing. This competition has never been more open, the gap between the premiers and a dozen other sides isn't as great as many think. The biggest myth in football is "we missed finals, we are years away from contending". The last 3 premiers gives us hope.

The fact that there was an inevitability about the losses, that 2 were by a kick after the siren, the total margin was 34 points and we had one more scoring shot over all 5 games makes the 5-0 scoreline even less easy to accept.

Maybe but when you beat a Victorian team at their home ground it removes all doubt.

Unfortunately it means that Richmond and Collingwood supporters now have some more ammunition to say that having 14 home and away games at the MCG is not an unfair advantage.
