I missed most of the game today, but just logging on to here, you’d think Frampton played as one extra for Freo.

How bad was he exactly? I’ll take gifs if it’s too hard to explain in words

He did 2 really really good things (a chase down tackle on a small player and a really good contest against 3 in F50) but was just his usual poor self for the rest of the game.

On current form McPherson should go before Kelly, offering zero offensively, certainly less than Kelly today. All in all McPherson has just been middling this season.
I must be blind to McPherson's problems because I just see a really solid - hard at it - clean defender with some rebound.

But then, I like Kelly too :)

How did you rate Lynch's game today...

Lynch annoys me.
I see his worth, but then he gets 90% of an action right and ****s the last 10%

Bursts on a lead, burning his opponent, takes the mark, makes a smart decision to take on a tough (but goal creating) kick and then will kick it 1m over the guys head or 1m in front of him.

A lot of players dont get the 90% right, but the 10% screws us too often.

Funny I didn't recall saying anything negative about the young learning guys. Just figured when you lose your captain, a hard running midfielder, might be an idea not to replace that role, than with a low possession key forward, but a midfielder. Hugs to you.
OK - but look at who we have rotating through there. Berry, Sholl, Schoenberg, Fog ... all kids. Bloody Keays looks like an elder statesman with a whopping 51 matches under his belt. Laird is the only true mid we have in the rotation right now, what's his history as a mid? Maybe 10 games?

We aren't a midfielder short at all, we are rebuilding ... so our players are still learning.

Want to know what we are really missing? Fans with patience or a longer vision than making the eight. That is clear.

So Frampton hasn’t scored a goal for a month....

there is no logical basis for continuing to select this guy.

1. Continuity
2. Collective performance
3. Don't change a winning team
4. Back the guys in to respond
5. Don't make change for change sake
6. Non-statistical role

These are fully supported logical reasons mentioned by our selection apologists and coaches over the years.

Being a threat when the game is over isn’t impressive.

At this stage he’s a talented front runner trying to take a specy at every opportunity.

I can handle casual/lethargic players, but some consistent effort would be good.
The game wasn't over last week though, we were actually behind on the scoreboard.

The better chance of winning should be way outside of the core decision making process.

You know how we will get a better chance of winning? When these guys all have 50 games in the bank in the roles we want them in.

I think most of the time, with lowly rebuilders like us, the playing youth policy increases your chances of winning in the short term anyway (not that it should matter). We are a case in point for that. I just think some of our supporters need to step back and look a bit wider.

Hately should come in because he has a long term future AND is ready to go.
Lynch should go out because he is injured and is in the team for structure and leadership - he is not our future.

Neither decision should pivot on how much either choice influences our chances of winning Round 6.

I was just pre-refuting the typical, "you can't just play kids, you'll instantly become Carlton/Melbourne" bullshit from the usual apologists. It just happens that Lynch missing for Hately serves 3 masters. Improved short term game day performance, development of 22yo Hately and getting Lynch right so he can properly perform the role he's selected for. Only a selection group with terminal flaws wouldn't make that call. I'm just waiting to hear that Hately needs the run after missing last week to be really certain.

No replacing Sloane ... zero options that would do that. This idea that we replace a spot in the team with a specific type of player makes it sound like we have worked out our structures, have the system in place. We don't.

We need to do more than just test players, we need to see what the new squad can do - how they can work together. It's not just a missing piece of the puzzle - it's a new puzzle.

Let's ride it out for a bit. Let's take pleasure in seeing what we can find in our squad. Laird in now a midfielder - nice. Maybe Fog is our bull mid/forward?, or is he a full-forward that kicks 100 goals in our premiership year? Maybe Jones is the Half-Forward pressure player, maybe he regains his ball finding in the middle? Maybe McAsey will work with Thilthorpe and form a terrifying forward team for years to come OR he is the heart of our defence? Is Shoenberg a mid, or an Isaac Smith style wingman?

Lynch is carrying a toe.... and not really performing

So ******* rest him. It's not hard. It's a development year. Give a kid a go. Get him to travel with the team. It will be invaluable

Lynch out, Fog into his role and bring in Hately or Pedlar
You had me... until you said "Fog into his role". Fog is not capable of playing Lynch's role. Lynch needs a rest, but Fog cannot play his role.

I think he had two gettable shots on goal as well though - one miss and one shank with no score if I recall correctly. Could have papered over some cracks.

What's sad is that's a better game for him than the previous 2 weeks. 3 weeks of poor form in a row now.

For me it's obvious as anything we are a midfielder short. We are missing one of Gately/Crouch/Sloane type. Fog is not the hybrid answer. I think this is where we lost out vs Fremantle in the last half of the 4th quarter. Among the other issues raised.

You're probably right but once we've got some of our 1st choice midfielders back there's no harm in giving Fog a run through there once in a while.

But this is not Adelaide philosophy

Never mind the supporters being patient - at least we understand where we are

Tom Lynch CONNECTOR role is not up for discussion though. It's the foundation that Richmond's success is built upon. So any replacement for Tommy needs to be exactly like Tommy.

We have no-one on our list that can play the 'Lynch' role because he is the only one who plays this role ... so what now? Go in with one short?
Lynch plays, more or less, as an extra wingman. We have players who can perform that role - maybe not as well as Lynch, but far better than Fogarty can.

Well rotate someone through there then. I don't give a sh*t. Put Tex into that role and move Fog into Tex's role. But don't play Lynch....
I agree that Lynch needs to be rested.

The problem is that we really only have 2 players who appear even close to earning AFL selection - Hately & Worrell. Himmelberg appears likely to replace Frampton (hopefully sooner rather than later), but that's pretty much by default, given that Berg's own form hasn't been anything to write home about. Our other young midfielders (Gollant, O'Connor, Cook) are all further off in their development process.

Our options will open up a bit more in the near future, with Sloane set to return (fingers crossed), and Pedlar getting some miles in his legs to improve his match fitness. Maybe we will need to wait for these two, before we see Lynch given the rest he so badly needs.

1) He has been poor for the last three games in a row --- worst vsGCS, worst vs NM, 2nd worst (to McAdam) vs Freo. He has been our least effective player!
2) He has been given 4 more games after Geelong to show the first game was not a fluke. He hasn't.
3) This is his SEVENTH season, 5 on Port's list during which he played 3 AFL games.
11 AFL games, for 11 goals, in 6+ Seasons. He's been given "breaks" the biggest of which was the contract the Crows gave him after ZERO AFL success with PA.
Slow developer?
Nah, non-developer. Drop him.`
Makes no sense why we gave a player that Powaa was about to delist a 4 year deal. What did they see from those 3 underwhelming games over a 5 year period that justified a 4 year deal? Even If it's 50k a year it still makes no sense why we gave him that deal. I don't blame a spud player trying to rip off an AFL club. Good luck to him if a club is stupid enough to pay him. I blame the idiot club. How can the person responsible still be employed at the club if this is what they are coming up with?

There's definitely some evidence that most of us are a little more aware of where we are at than the coaching group is.

hahaha wow, this is all the self-indulgence i can take for today, and it's only just gone 10:00AM..

I'll be back for the selection melts, adios!

I believe the coaching group is well aware of where we are at but they are influenced by some key stakeholders above. The coaching group knows where their bread is buttered so they are in a precarious situation of rebuilding while placating. I wouldn't imagine this would be enjoyable. I presume they are hoping the key stakeholders are removed asap so that they can rebuild in a much quicker manner without list management decisions slowing down the rebuild and subsequently placing more pressure on their tenure. I would also imagine they are hoping for changes in the recruitment/talent ID area so they have some better quality to work with. A coaching group is the icing on the cake. if you have a shit cake there's only so many ways you can dress it up.

Compare the pair:

Both key forwards
Their 4 most recent games
View attachment 1106973View attachment 1106974

View attachment 1106972

One guy was 24
One was 22

One was playing 20 minute quarters
One was playing 16 minute quarters

One has no future in the AFL
One might

Himmelberg also took 8 contested marks and 6 marks inside 50 across those games
Frampton has taken 5 contested and 4 i50 in comparison

A fair few people seem to have turned on Himmelberg again. I get that his form this year hasn’t been great but he’s shown more at AFL level than Frampton ever has and he deserves another good chance to prove himself
He does now that he finally pulled his finger out and tried for the first time last week.
