I'm not normally a whipping-boy thrasher, but, in the 2.5 quarters I had the pleasure of stomaching last night, Mackay did play very badly, significantly worse than any of his other games this year. His tackling has been much more respectable this year, but last night he shirked plenty. In addition, he gave nothing with the ball. If the selectors have been waiting for a "droppable" game from him, then this was it. If they are going to average his performance over the year, then he will be safe.

Just had a look at the past three seasons for 400kay. I know he had an injury and missed some games in one of the years, I just cannot recall which one, also he has been dropped before for form. Even that I cant recall exactly when but it has happened.

In 2014, 4 games of 15 or less disposals
In 2015, 14 games. Noting that included 9 and 6 disposals in the two finals.
In 2016, 4 games.
In 2017, currently 3 games.

Need some hunger in the side. Pyke needs to show he's willing to drop underperforming players.
Make them work for and earn their spot.

Out this week: Menzel (inj), Mackay (omitted), Cameron (managed),

In: Lever, Greenwood, Galluci/Polhoke.

On thin ice as per my above statement: The whole side except Sloane and Eddie. No golden tickets, no passengers.

I drank reasonably heavily last night, I just remember thinking what the **** about the whole game.

Was Mackay bad, bad bad or ******* Mackay?

Now, I am pretty good at not shouting at the TV, maybe shout for joy when a player does something extraordinary and then force Mrs J to watch the sequence of play ( deep down knowing that she really doesn't care, though she thought Eddies goal against GWS last year was OK...tough judge I guess)

Anyways, I may have yelled at the TV last night and the exact words were " for ****s sake, either break a tackle or stick a tackle you useless ****ing campaigner".

That summed up Mackays game last night...and to a point his career. I have this horrible feeling that his highlights video will be people breaking his tackles followed by " almost tackled by Mackay"

Its not just putting body on the line. It's making the extra yard to impact a contest, it's not taking short steps when someones coming the other way, it's accepting body contact and staying over the ball in close. Lots of little things that influence how a team competes in close. Most of it is in the head, and come down to desire.

Well come on then tell us which ones of Sloane, Crouch X2 or Douglas doesn't do that?

It's time to unleash Thor, the return of the big bodied mid into our lineup is well overdue. I'd also like to see what a Beech or Wigg can bring to the side.
Who comes out, it's obvious in manys eyes but we're not on the selection committee. It they can send a stern message to the group that'd be nice.
Just staggered how we've gone from a Ferrari to a Sigma in the space of 2 weeks. I think it's effort & the boys need to grow a spine when things aren't going their way, we got out to a 5 goal lead & just thought it would happen. Good teams win when they're up against it & we are not a good team until we start doing that.

If you say so. These are the blokes who've been smacked in the middle 2 weeks running you know, ever since Sloane stopped carrying them.
Nobody has said they had good games, nobody has said they weren't soundly beaten but you're intimating they don't put in and have pea hearts which is utter tosh.

I think you've forgotten Laird. He is untouchable. Even last night, he was the only player on our side who looked serene, composed, capable, and in form.

If you say so - it was a pretty pea hearted performance two weeks in a row.

The amount of stick Mackay cops on this forum is pathetic.

I'm not necessarily saying I'm a fan, but at the end of the day he is a Crow and to constantly bash one of your own players for being selected is harsh IMO. Have a go at the selectors, not the player.

Mackay's selection embodies everything wrong with this club at the moment

- Zero forwards who are any good overhead in this team, bar Betts and it clearly shouldn't be his job. McGovern isn't available so in comes BEECH.

- Since Sloane has been tagged out the rest of the mids have either accumulated crap possessions or not touched it at all...let's bring in a guy who seems in the SANFL to actually run both ways, tackle, yet get inside ball and not panic with it...in comes GREENWOOD

- Backline is pathetically slow, unimaginative, poorly skilled...it's a big risk but I'm sensing a now or never moment for a guy who, while his disposal has been questioned, certainly at this aims to do more than crab kicks and handballs. Yeah, it's nice to defend but the balance is awful atm...in comes WIGG

- LEVER obviously comes back in. Otten is a depth player at either end and I'd drop him but let both Hartigan and Jenkins know they've cashed in their last brownie point and are back to zero...one more pathetic effort and they are gone the next week.

- Finally the lack of defensive running, intensity at the contest and general passion and giving a toss was missing...I'd be bringing in KNIGHT who actually tries, gives a crap and seems passionate.

From there a couple positional changes. Hampton doesn't have enough production as a full time mid but his tackling and skills in space are good...give him more forward time. Also, Walker is playing very 'pick and choose' footy atm and getting closed down too easily. Get him to use his tank and skills around the ground and give him Lynch's role with Beech playing deeper.

IN: Lever, Greenwood, Knight, Beech, Wigg
OUT: Mackay, Menzel, Otten, Kelly, Lynch (a big name must pay and he was putrid...prob selectors can shoulder some blame also)
LAST CHANCE: Jenkins, B Crouch, Hartigan
?: If Cameron not fit, he goes and Menzel gets one more week.

LINE UP:

Betts, Beech, Jenkins
Hampton, Walker, Cameron
Atkins, Sloane, Milera
Smith, Hartigan, Laird
Brown, Talia, Lever
Jacobs, Greenwood, MC

BC, Douglas, Wigg, Knight
I agree with everything you've said.

I wonder whose idea it was for a 4 year deal, ours or his? Got the feeling he knew we were in a delicate position with losing players and used it to his advantage. That being the case he's pretty much ensured he's selected otherwise we have deadwood for 4 years.

Dude it was next level. His crowning glory was being moved to a back pocket and handing his direct opponent the final goal of the game by impersonating a netball goal defender. If anyone can post video of the "attempt at stopping this goal from occurring", I feel like it would be a cathartic experience to relive it.

He was excellent in Round 1. He had a great 20 minute patch in the 2nd half in Round 2, after being completely and utterly useless in the first half. He kicked a great goal in Round 3 and was completely ineffective for the rest of that game. Since then, he has literally done nothing. His field kicking is shit. His tackling is shit. He gets continually rag dolled. He is mentally weak beyond belief in games where the physical heat is turned up by the opposition. He does not cope with pressure. He's a downhill skiier. He is a laughing stock. I have close friends who support Port Adelaide, Geelong, Essendon, North Melbourne - it is universally agreed that his continual selection makes no sense. Nobody gets it. NOBODY. It is way beyond a joke now. It's actually worse than VB after the Achilles injury, because at least VB provided strong leadership in spite of his awful football. Mackay provides nothing 7-8 weeks out of every 10 and it's been going on for years. I've had enough.

Sorry, typing the thing about the goal made me vomit all that up. I didn't get to the toilet in time.
