Jason Garrett will remain Giants’ play-caller for now

by Charean Williams on November 8, 2021, 8:54 PM EST

The Giants are averaging 19.9 points per game this season. They have not scored more than 29 points in a game since a 37-34 loss to the Cowboys in Week 5 of the 2020 season, 21 games ago.

Thus, Joe Judge was asked Monday whether he was considering a change at offensive play-caller during the team’s bye week this week. Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett is in his second season in that role.

“No,” Judge said on a conference call, via Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News. “No, not at this moment we’re not.”

The Giants offense has been hit hard by injuries. Among them, left tackle Andrew Thomas (left ankle, right foot) has missed the past three games, and running back Saquon Barkley (left ankle) the past four.

Judge said he’s “hopeful” Thomas and Barkley will return for the team’s next game, a Week 11 trip to Tampa for Monday Night Football on Nov. 22.

Hall of Fame linebacker Sam Huff dies at 87

Hall of Fame linebacker Sam Huff has died. He was 87.

According to his family, via the Associated Press, Huff died of natural causes in Virginia.

A native of Farmington, West Virginia, Huff played at WVU before becoming a third-round pick of the New York Giants in 1956, the thirtieth overall selection. He spent eight years with the Giants, followed by four in Washington.

Huff is a member of the Giants’ Ring of Honor and the Washington Ring of Fame. West Virginia has retired his number, 75.

In 1959, Huff became the first NFL player to land on the cover of Time magazine. The following year, CBS presented The Violent World of Sam Huff, a special that gave fans an unprecedented look at football from the perspective of a player, narrated by Walter Cronkite.

The Athletic's Dan Duggan said barring "a dramatic second-half turnaround, the Giants will likely be in the market for a new general manager."

Another losing season will likely force the Giants' hand with Gettleman, whose fate has been tied to underachieving QB Daniel Jones since the team used the sixth overall pick in the 2019 draft to land Jones. Per Duggan, Jones in 2021 is 25th in completion percentage, 25th in passing yards per game, 25th in touchdown passes, 26th in yards per attempt, 24th in passer rating, 25th in QB rating, 25th in DVOA, and 23rd in EPA. By nearly every measure, he has been among the league's worst quarterbacks. More importantly for fantasy purposes, there could be "intrigue" this offseason in the potential replacement of offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, whose stale offense has barely improved from last year's disastrous performance. A creative OC could mean big things for Saquon Barkley, Kadarius Toney, Sterling Shepard, and the rest of the fantasy-relevant Giants in 2022.

Giants fired OC Jason Garrett.
Only the Jets (1.42) and Jaguars (1.54) have averaged fewer points per drive than the Giants (1.60) under Garrett since 2020, ranking stone-last in the NFL with 42 offensive touchdowns in that time and mustering season-lows in points, yards (215), first downs (15) and time of possession (24:21) on Monday night against the Bucs. It was a poor hiring from the beginning as Dave Gettleman was literally the only general manager bidding against himself for Garrett's services. Freddie Kitchens, Joe Judge’s senior offensive assistant, is expected to take over play-calling with Garrett gone beginning on Sunday against the Eagles. It remains to be seen who Joe Judge will scapegoat next for his own poor coaching with Garrett no longer around to blame.

The New York Post's Ryan Dunleavy expects Freddie Kitchens to be named the Giants interim offensive coordinator.
New York fired Jason Garrett on Tuesday following yet another terrible offensive showing, and Kitchens is the obvious in-house replacement. Kitchens had a memorably bad season as head coach of the Browns, but he earned that job on the back of a successful run coordinating Cleveland's offense down the stretch in 2018. Ultimately, this seems like a positive development for Daniel Jones, Saquon Barkley, and the rest of the offense.

SNY's Ralph Vacchiano reports Daniel Jones (neck) is likely out for Week 14 against the Chargers.
Jones, who has not been cleared for contact after missing practice last week and the Giants' Week 13 loss to Miami, might see a specialist for his neck strain. The injury is expected to keep him sidelined for several weeks. Meanwhile, Mike Glennon suffered a concussion against the Dolphins, leaving Jake Fromm -- who signed with the Giants last week -- as the team's likely Week 14 starter against LA. It's a disastrous end to a disastrous season for Big Blue. Every fantasy-relevant Giant should be downgraded if Fromm is under center.

NorthJersey.com's Art Stapleton reports QB Jake Fromm is "in line" to start Week 14 against the Chargers.
Mike Glennon was diagnosed with a brain injury following the Giants' Week 13 loss to the Dolphins and Daniel Jones hasn't been cleared for contact with a neck strain that could sideline him for several weeks. That leaves Fromm, who has yet to complete an NFL pass after being drafted with the 167th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, as the team's presumed starter against LA. The Giants signed Fromm off the Bills practice squad last week. The last we heard from Fromm, he was caught sending racist text messages and apologizing to teammates and fans for his transgressions. Fromm starting for the Giants is yet another downgrade for every fantasy-relevant player in the New York offense. Expect the Giants to do whatever it takes to get Glennon under center for Week 14.

Can imagine it, he gets fired and is back on PFT telling Mike how he had the QB he took and the HOF potential QB someone else did as equal first in his rankings, couldn't decide , just unlucky.

He'd whiff just Mayock. Like I said earlier, he ranked top 5 at all positions and had worse guys at 1 and 2 than guys at 3 and 4, and better guys at 3 than guys at 1 or 2. So he'll whiff here and there when he has to make a decision on a Tackle or a CB etc.

He's just human LicoriceAllsorts , no shame in that.

Saquon Barkley plans to be “big reason” why Giants turn things around

Posted by Josh Alper on December 15, 2021, 6:29 AM EST

Among the many disappointments for the Giants this season has been the play of running back Saquon Barkley, who has missed four games with an ankle injury and rushed 100 times for 379 yards when he has been healthy enough to be in the lineup.

Barkley missed 14 games after tearing his ACL last year, three games in 2019, and the Giants have gone 19-42 since taking Barkley with the second overall pick of the 2018 draft, so it’s fair to say that Barkley hasn’t had the kind of impact the team was hoping he’d have on their fortunes. Barkley called the results “unfortunate,” but said he believes things will turn for both him and the team.

Barkley told Rob Maaddi of the Associated Press that he feels “my burst was there a little bit” when watching tape of last Sunday’s loss to the Chargers and that it is going to “be a beautiful story” when the Giants finally put all of the pieces together. He added that he wants to remain a major part of the team as that process plays out.

“I plan on being a big reason why we turn this thing around,” Barkley said. “That’s just my mind-set, that’s my thought process. When I got drafted here, I said I want to be here for the rest of my life. I was born in New York, I’m from Pennsylvania. I live an hour and some change from my parents’ house. This is where I started my career, where I would love to finish my career. I know this thing is going to turn around and I would love to be a part of the reason it does.”

The Giants exercised Barkley’s fifth-year option, so he’ll almost certainly be back in 2022 regardless of other changes the team makes to their operations. Anything beyond that is up in the air, but the sooner that “beautiful story” gets underway the better for Barkley’s chances of spending his entire career with the team that drafted him.

I think there is literally no chance Jones is back.

Judge wont want to go down tied to a QB he was saddled with from when Pat Shurmer was coach

If there is a new coach, they'll want their own QB also.

What are peoples thoughts on the rumour that Judge and Jones will return next year?

Doesn't seem to be much in the way of QB's in the draft. A lot of Jones problems are caused by the poor OL. It's hard to get a real gauge on his real ability. But he's cut down on turnovers drastically this year. It just depends what else is available

The idea of Wilson is tempting but there are too many question marks. He'd be sitting behind a worse OL than he has at SEA, would cost a lot to get in terms or draft picks and would eat up a lot of cap (which we have little of). He also looks best when using playaction which Judge doesn't seem to big on.

As for Judge, well I'm not much of a fan. The Mara's will say that publicly, but it be the (likely) new GM's call.

I'm expecting the Giants to make a play for a vet QB like Wilson etc. They are just gonna try imo. Especially if Gettleman is gone (he drafted Jones) so new GM not beholden to Jones. Jones could still stay as back-up in that scenario, could be traded.
Wilson will cost far too much.
We need to improve the oline and either draft a new QB or back Jones in
