Prelim mail: Tigers on standby for late change

– Lauren Wood

RICHMOND defender David Astbury is battling illness ahead of tonight's epic preliminary final against Collingwood.

The 27-year-old has been struck down with a flu-like virus this week and was sent home from the club yesterday, essentially quarantined from his teammates.

He will be given until later today to put his hand up to play, with Ryan Garthwaite a likely replacement if the premiership backman doesn't get up.

It is understood that the Richmond medical department was initially not too concerned about the illness but Astbury will be given the remainder of the day to give himself every chance to recover as much as he can before any call is made.

Astbury has missed just two games this season, Round 22 with an Achilles complaint and Round 13 with an ankle injury. He was replaced on both occasions by Garthwaite for his only two AFL appearances.

Unfortunately can't get to the game !! (ha ha - along with 600 thousand others) - but I reckon if for some stupid reason they get on top of us then start the Colllinngwood crap - when we hit back and beat them - should hit them with 'Pull yaaapud' - or maybe just hit them with it anyway !!!

garth will s**t himself in a big final i reckon

Pies fan boy flog right there. Could he be more wrong? Embarrassing.

# Apparently we've been largely unaffected by injuries for 18 months.
Dusty, Martin and Jack have all missed games. Rioli missed a fair chunk at the start of the year. Houli has missed lots of games. Butler has missed. Conca missed plenty. Graham has missed through injury. Lambert has missed through injury. Prestia has missed plenty through injury.
Largely unaffected? I don't think so.

# Jacob Townsend is likely the only enforced change from the team that beat the Tigers in round 19.
Houli and Graham didn't play - both premiership players.
Wrong again ass clown.

Seriously this journo (if you can call him that) is a fwit. All his facts are incorrect. It's pure fiction.
Conca also didnt play r19

If it is indeed viral it can be difficult to treat. You can only manage the symptoms and it could get worse before it gets better. If he has a temperature no way the docs will clear him to play. He just won't be able to perform at the level and it's dangerous to his own health, and you wouldn't want him being around the other boys infecting everyone if we win.

Imagine getting to a GF and the team is cooked with the flu. :drunk::drunk:

I'm just hoping it was all precautionary and the media is beating it up. We need this bloke tonight firing on all cylinders. Our back line works so well because everyone has a role and they play it so well. As promising as I believe Garth is, this is a bloody Prelim. Astbury's experience and composure back there cannot be replaced.
