Review Round 23 = Collingwood 100-124 Brisbane Lions

I’ve watched the replay. With the knowledge of the result taking the raw emotion out of it, I’m not sure we were that bad. I think Brisbane were just THAT good. They played as well as they can. They didn’t miss many shots at goal.
On the flip side, we could have done better, absolutely. We’re capable of better defensive efforts than that game displayed.
But it’s not as doom and gloom as I had felt on the night as it played out.

Has anyone else felt this way if you’ve watched the replay?

The thing that gives me confidence is that Fly says that you position yourself in the top 8 during the season. Bank the wins. Then the finals are a different beast.
We saw this last year I reckon. Our wins in the home and away season we’re not convincing. They always felt like a fluke.
We took it up to the very dominant Geelong (who would be Premiers) and nearly won that.
We smashed Freo.
We then battled flu, illness etc and still got within a point of beating Sydney up there.
Despite the two losses, we played better footy in the finals.

i am not greatly worried by Friday night. I think the last few weeks have bought expectations closer in line to where mine always were. The top 4 is even and teams 5-8, now that the finals bye has helped further turn the finals into a raffle, have real chances of making the GF and winning a flag.

Like it has been for a long time Flys job, once top 4 was bedded down, is to make sure we are humming in Sept. Any gameplan changes may well be held in these weeks and revealed to the rest of the comp in the finals

We have aa a good a chance as anyone, having said that its probably on a 1:4 0r 1: 5 chance so not winning the flag is a fair deal more likely. They are just really tough to win. Fly has done a great job to get us where we are. My biggest concern is this is probably the season that will give us the best chance for a while now so we need to win it.

Fly has doubled down on our old best 23 to try and snare a flag with his recruiting of mature, ready to play types who can fill something we are missing. Downside is a few days after the GF 10 of the players who lined up on Friday will be 30+ years. We have a maturity similar to Geelong of 2022 and not a lot of highly rated youth sitting in the VFL, Allen the main exception. Geelong did so well with their 3 young gun recruits last off season. We will need to be similarly smart if we are to rejuvenate quickly.

Agree. That is exactly it!

Flags are super elusive. In my 39 years, we’ve won two. I was too young to remember 1990.

It’s not easy to win them. Harder now than ever with 18 teams and equalisation socialistic systems in place.
You could be 59 and still have only experienced two.
We're a long suffering bunch.

Suffering was/is being at the following GFs - 1970, 1979 and 1981
Too true. 3 reasons i hate Carlton more than anything else in the world. 70 79 81

Listening to Checkers on the Footy Show this morning didn't fill me with great confidence. He seemed uncertain and sheepish. Anyone else watch the interview and feel differently? It may just be his personality.

He's always a bit like that - he won't win any prizes for public speaking.

Don’t stress. He’s one of the worst public speakers I’ve ever seen. He just doesn’t know what to say so splashes out cliche after cliche.

I found watching the live game a difficult enough experience without adding to the trauma by subjecting myself to a replay!

Yep. His personality. Jamie Elliott is a little similar.
Not so much shy but despise media.

We were not bad at all. Our midfield got given a big whack for certain periods which led to our backline copping some serious heat, but we still had moments. Clawing our way back into that game in the 3rd led by Pendlebury and Cox was pretty impressive.

Brisbane had lots go their way with accuracy in front of goals and perfect crumbing

I thought it was one of the least stressful of the year because I didn't feel we were ever in it. The easy goals to Brisbane would be a hard watch.

I thought our attack and efficiency in fwd 50 was elite. Need to have more than 40 inside 50s in finals to win a flag though.

By 'difficult enough' I really meant that I lost interest in it - didn't even resort to having a drink. It wasn't so much the stress of rewatching as the purposelessness of the experience given how little enthusiasm I had for the live game.

Maybe you could show some perspective. Fly inherited a team that finished bottom 2, with huge salary cap issues (we still have some), no access to top talent bar daicos thanks to prior admin, and has taken them to a prelim last year and top 2 Finish atm this season.
It’s well know by all of us that we don’t have the best list, I bet your ladder predictor didn’t have us top.

We have done very well with the list we have , but there are clear weaknesses that will take time to fix. This season is very tight, we aren’t the best team, on paper bris are and their talent shows.

The season is far from over like you preach every single week, but perhaps take a step back and enjoy what fly has managed to do in such a short period of time.
This sounds like a concession that we're not the best team in it, we were earlier in the year.

You're correct in the list we have is certainly not the best in it too.

You give the impression if we don't win the flag then 'just enjoy what we have achieved anyway' - yeah that's not gonna fly.

The whole point of the competition is to be better than your competition, no point being better when it doesn't count, need to win flags, that's the end game.

Expecting supporters to be 'happy with what we've achieved' just won't sit.

We need to flag before the blose and the bomb outs do, that is absolutely essential.

So I'm gonna kindly ask you to respect other fans views of what and what is not satisfactory
