Time to change feet goodoldcats… Stanley was no dud this evening.

Played very well.

I'll put my hand up and say I did not believe he can play as a first choice ruckman but last night, he began to give me some good vibes. He was also up against a ruckman that plays a very robust, down and dirty style of game. It was a terrific effort to beat him at his own game.
If Stanley can start winning more hit-outs, I'm going to have a lot of egg on the face but that's ok . . . we desperately need a quality ruckman.

(will say this though, I was happy about the Stanley trade from the very beginning)

That's why I made the comment that I think our rucks are fixed.
He adds flexibility.

When you see Clark sprint to CHB, while stanley covers the edge of the square on the wing and Hawkins can sit in 50....
There's a whole different pace aspect to the setup.
Then add Blicavs.

Also Stanley seems to mark at the highest point of trajectory.
Thats damn dangerous. And a huge asset on a bail out kick.

I guess my vision of a no.1 ruckman is more suited to that of a Lobbe, Jacobs, Minson. The 'Ottens' type, if you will. The leaner, vastly athletic rucks (though Ottens was a ridiculously good aerialist), we have gone with, and they have failed us time and time again.
Vardy, Blicavs, West . . . just don't have the body to hang with the bigger boys. Can Stanley begin to hold his own in that regard?
That is my concern. We always knew he had no issues roaming around the ground though. Watch the highlights package of him when he played in defence, forward and ruck, and you can see how incredibly agile he is.

I just liked his influence last night. Perhaps his fitness base is beginning to improve to the point in which he can manage four quarter effectively throughout?

If Simpson was to re-capture that 2013 form, we suddenly have ourselves two fairly young rucks who could carry the team when they begin another climb in the coming years.

Yeah I get the #1 ruck mould.
Not sure we need it with this 2nd man up thing.

Stanley isn't a good ruck yet in my opinion.
But he's a bloody good tall trying to play ruck.

If that makes sense. The jump is a big advantage.
Collingwood didn't even bother jumping most of the time.

yeh I agree. His leaping is quite brilliant. In fact, most of the marks he took last night, he would jump early, but still have the hang time to just pluck the ball as he was on the way down. Obviously had the full extension of the arms out but that hanging ability is a really rare athletic trait some blokes are just born with.

LOL at your signature.

Thats what I meant when I said taking the ball at a high trajectory.

Hawkins for example. I think he'd prefer a chest mark, or an over head mark where he really isn't extending.
Stanley seems to like to take it as high as possible.

Bloody tough to stop.
Just do that twice a game on the wing etc. It will make a difference.

SJ maybe we should drag some of these comments out and put them in a stanley thread?

I reckon hawkins was more a ball in front of the eyes guy.
There's not many that like taking it at the peak.

Maybe reiwoldt (nick)
Fletcher.
Possibly Kennedy (WC)

I'm sure theres more. But there's not many.

Stanley won the grandfinal sprint in around 2009.

But that type of speed is close to irrelevant in an AFL game. Better speed is 10 yard speed, or first 3 steps from a clench/stop-stand. I think James Walker of Freo, circa2000-2008, was the fastest player to play a game. But how often did you see him use that speed? did you ever? no. The best speed is the Aaron Davey, Pierce Freo, Garlett Melb, Dalhaus Footscray, Rioli Hawks. I would far prefer Cyril Rioli than Lewis Jetta from Sydney even after the GF. It is the agility and first step, and explosivness to terminal velocity. heck, Fevola won the gf sprint cos he had good terminal velocity, speed endurance, from his long stride length

See Trav Cloke in his first 5 years. He was less than average pack mark. Mediocre. Not even good hands. Then in 18 months, he rose the ranks to the best in the league. Musta got Dermie to work with him. Dermie said Jack bobble-head Reiwoldt has about the best hands in the league when he was doing skills specialist for Wallace one year.

Also, see: Mike Pyke. Can make in-roads with commitment, work-ethic, time, and some innate talent for the overhead mark. I think 3 years ago, at half way point in the season, Pyke lead the league in contested marks. I think he finished second (coulda been third).

Jeremy Howe will just take the mark anywhere, on your head, on your shoulders, and he has phenomenal hands, like Mark Waugh at second slip, Howe's hands are grippy, the only reason he does not take them high over his head, is cos he has already deployed his oxygen mask and is coming down, and he usually does that float-in-from-the-side like Royce Hart or Nat Fyfe when he is jumping on or over the pack.

Reckon Cockatoo could give the GF sprint a fair shake. If he's not playing in the game
