Autopsy 8 point win vs North

The team that Carlton almost ran over last night ? They only just beat North too.

Yes they are an amazing team the last few years but they aren't perfect either, who else Hawthorn barely beat port , Dockers just beat the pies and crows etc.

Not saying we were great today and don't have demons but all these other top sides have issues too, yes Brisbane know they are good from the past 2 years but it's no guarantee of success.

We
Sometimes (me included) spend all this time praising the other good sides yet somehow we sit above them all for now . Yes we choked in two recent grand finals, but this current Hawks side and Dockers side haven't got near the day for instance .
If we can take care of the Pies & then Cats, I will be more on board. I need to see us in a defensive game we win with grit while holding the opposition score below 65. That’s an important cog we need. Lions have won their era. Still going now but that’s the team we need to emulate. Not the current Lions team but the one of the last few years.

That was a difficult watch. Our worst game of the season. Strangely both teams were slipping and fumbling despite the closed roof. What gives? And there were so many more errors besides.

Glad to bank the 4 points and move on. It's not the time of the season we need to be peaking but it wasn't encouraging either. Feeling nervous about Collingwood next week now.

The coach’s need to pull paps aside and say no more kicking past 30 m out and for god sack stop spending the ball before you get it the fumbling has been so frustrating for someone who was very clean

Do you think that was maybe because the defenders were more worried and therefore paying a lot more attention to Amartey rather than McLean? It appeared to me that without Charlie there, they were a whole lot more worried about Joel than good old titanic Hayden.
Sure, there was certainly an element of that. But I think McLean was good today and was important as our deepest forward.

So what do we do then if Curnow is fit? lol 5 talls cant possibly work.

Can Mclean solo ruck the whole game if we rest Grundy with Amartey the chop out?

Being at the game, when I flew into Melbourne this morning it was extremely dewy when I landed around 10am. Visibility was quite low. Even though the roof was closed, I made this same comment to my old man during the game and my best guess was that the ground and ball were still a little dewy. Just enough to cause some trouble.

I think if Curnow is fit, he comes back. He needs to be given every chance to build his connection within our team and ultimately succeed as we have made a massive investment in him. Charlie is showing good signs and I'm confident he will continue to improve. I agree that Amartey is the best sidekick to Charlie and Logan also stays as he has the mobility to be our third tall (as well he is improving after his 12 month lay off).

So that leaves Mclean the unfortunate odd man out despite his good game today. On the plus side for him, he showed he is a handy forward / ruck and should be able to find a new home if he decides to leave. As a primary ruck, crazy Pete is superior.

Not saying you have to believe I think just assess what we have seen fairly and stop talking if, buts and future as much

Yeah not sure about last night, assume they put the cue in the rack and nearly got burnt.. Agree it's great sitting on top and I'm not taking it for granted.. Would just like to see us work on a different style of play at some stage during the year.. Incase our preferred style of play gets completely shut down (in a big game) we have something else.

The Lions threw out several regular season shockers in 2024 and 2025, they just managed to string together 3/4 strong games in the finals. I don’t think at any point they were as dominant as us so far this year or in the first half of 2024.

And as far as defensively we’re also 2nd for points conceded this season, behind only Freo who play the game at a glacial pace (and if McCartin didn’t get injured we’d still be #1 probably). We haven’t been in a defensive scrap cause we keep finding ways to pile on huge scores even if our first method gets shut down (like Melbourne blocking the corridor).

I thought Grundy was good today overall ? He is carrying a ****en workload though.

Cox has to rest him imo soon
Grundy was fantastic again today. Seeing his and Papleys connections at stoppages was some good spectating live at the ground. Grundy’s ability to get a free hand to the ball while grappling with his opponents at stoppage shows his mental strength and determination to win the tap at all costs is as good as you will ever see. Magnificent competitor.

Rampe , Wicks and sheldrick were really good.
North were without Xerri for 3 or 4 games. They would have won a couple more games had he played.
Good/lucky win in the end

Listening to Cox's presser, He sounded PISSED OFF at how that played out.

Wonder when the advanced statistics come out soon to see where exactly it broke down

He's not backward in coming forward when he's not happy. I think he'd be asking the mids what the heck was going on because Isaac was playing a lone hand there for some parts of the game.

Also, I do like Rosas field kicking. Generally picks good options.

Is it time to have another conversation about Rowey?

77% TOG for just nine disposals is awful for a full-time midfielder. He wasn't alone in this either, but his defensive work rate was shocking, too.

Feel like he'll just always be a 16 disposal, 7 tackle, 4 clearance player which can be easily replaced.

Post of the night.

Few tricky games

Pies always good against us
cats at Geelong yuck
Tigers surely easy
Saints tricky

Pies at home we should get the job done
Cats away is always tough but i think they are a mid table side this year
Richmond is one of those random/weird games but should be easy win
Saints always play well against us and are coming good might be even better in a months time.

Will take 2-2 especially if we drop off a little ourselves

Another way to look at it ...

Pies ... these days we beat them more often than not, especially in Sydney
Cats ... aren't what they used to be
Tigers ... we'd beat em 9 times out of 10
Saints ... seem to always test us, rarely beat us.

You'd wanna be winning at least three of them
