Watching footy classified tonight and hearing the AFL are prepared to wait generations to build up support for GWS and Gold Coast has to go down as the dumbest statement ever. If they think that will ever happen, they have rocks in their heads. Like Melb will never be an NRL state, how do they think 100 years of NRL in Sydney and QLD will just swap to AFL. Come on AFL, get real. Pigs will fly before GWS or GC ever get a decent crowd.

The real issue here is….why do you watch footy classified? 🤪

Pretty much the same thing was said about the Swans.

The reason it takes a few generations is because when you're entering a new market and want something to last for generations the best demographic to target is children. That way you have strong youth participation numbers (which means more potential draftees) and start to create a multi generational supporter base. How many footy fans do you know follow a team because an older family member supported that team? Well that takes decades to build, especially in a new market

Sydney took a while to actually become "Sydney" and not "relocated South Melbourne".
The AFL are banking on the same thing.

I suspect we'll see decent Canberra support for GWS before significant growth in Western Sydney or the Gold Coast, which is a sporting graveyard in recent years.

I believe in time, Gold Coast will cement itself up there.

But GWS? Will never happen UNTIL they solidify somewhere or another.

Canberra? Sydney? IDK, IDC. But with 1 foot in each location, how can the fan base grow if they don't know if they'll be there in 20 years.

Solidify in Sydney, Canberra20.

Done.

No it isn't. That's just short term thinking on your behalf.

The Suns and Giants were always medium to long term projects. They're going to be around for a long time.

2050 projected populations (Australia is projected to have 37.6 million)
  • Sydney - 7.7 million
  • South East Queensland - 6 million (including Gold Coast's 1.1 million and Brisbane's 4.2 million).
The AFL will persevere with the Suns and the Giants for the above reasons. The medium to long term benefits for the AFL and the game itself in those states will be significant.

Yet they continue to play hardball in Tassie.
The difference is potential new money entering the game’s economy from untapped and growth markets in QLD and SYD vs a lot less potential for new money from Tassie that is already a footy heartland

Decent crowd by AFL standards, NRL does not get that, so why should AFL in NSW or Qld. The real issue is if the extra TV cash from having GWS & Gold Coast covers the cost of the teams.

Dump one of them for Tassie and there is more money to be made.

If the Hawks and Roos are allowed to keep playing there as well you could have games in both cities most weekends.

Only reason it isnt happening is stubbornness. The refusual to acknowledge GCS and GWS were bad decisions then, and bad decisions now.

Short attention span take here.

$200m over 10 years and still struggling (plus who knows how much sneaky money is involved). x 2 clubs.

Expensive take over there.

Sneaky money? Ohh that’s right you were one of the ones who couldn’t handle players rejecting the Hawks and thought dodgy deals were going on.
And according to the AFL and clubs they are paying for themselves through tv rights and grassroots.

Investment in grassroots is never cheap. I know that’s hard for some down there to understand considering the Vic clubs put nothing into grassroots.
Do you think the players just pop out of the ground? Like daisy’s?

Sneaky money meaning Im sure the AFL has poured in a lot more money in through general expenses or other ways than simply what they announce in club funding.

Im glad we missed out on all the players we had been in to. None have gone on to bigger things. Coniglio was even dropped because his form was so bad. With how many years to go?

Do the Melbourne Storm get reasonable crowds?

The NRL have finally moved to a second Brisbane team but SEQ, Northern NSW and the Gold Coast has a big expat Victorian community and junior footy numbers are strong. Especially in women's footy.

If they can survive the Gold Coast curse I really do feel the Suns can build something sustainable. It doesn't take a huge leap to get from the 14k GC got in round one to over 20k and it should be consistent once it builds assuming the side has a stable run of at least not being terrible.

GWS crowds are going to be a battle for decades. Sydney sporting crowds just aren't good. And the team struggles to have an identity.

GWS is fun to say and they're orange, but that's not really a strong identity. They aren't true Western Sydney. They play a lot in CBR and get their season disrupted by the Easter Show. Homebush isn't impossible to get to but it's not a place that people really identify with. Greater Western means that anyone west of the Sydney CBD including the rest of NSW isn't excluded but it doesn't really include anyone either. The AFL did it so they can lay claim to millions of people as potential fans but the cost is you don't grab anyone especially.

Obviously they would've got more anger than they already got but I think they would've been better off trying to divide the Swans base and then boost up both teams together by targeting a slice of the Swans existing AFL demographics in Sydney. Ie. a team in the North Shore, Inner West or even be really brave and just have a second SCG team.

SE Qld is widely regarded as the world capital of Rugby League - if they can’t make the Titans financially viable, how would you expect the Suns to work?

… If we’re going to subsidise a side, it should be in Tasmania

Enjoy that tin foil.
2nd in our b&f last season.
Close to our best player so far this year.

It’s going to be hard for GWS to get big crowds as Sydney folk generally don’t turn up in big numbers to any sport. I do think they would be better suited in Canberra and tapping into the region. My parents and my brothers all live in the Southern NSW region and are all go to games in Canberra and in their communities there seems some decent supports for GWS.
As for the Gold Coast, no sporting team has ever done well up there but I think the Suns can go against the grain and attract a half decent crowd most weeks
