List Mgmt. Best young key forward in the game

Yeah Naughton was really impressive kicking 6 goals against the Crows witches hats but he still struggles against good defenders. laughable that people rate him ahead of Max King or even Ben King.
Kicked 5 against Richmond, 4 against Geelong, 3 against Brisbane in his first year as a forward, best contested mark in the H&A season last year but no, he is a sham.

Yeah but Harry Taylor, Harris Andrews, Dylan Grimes and Nick Vlastuin are all bad defenders, right?

The highest on this list will be those who have a more prominent role.

Allen would probably stand out more if he had Darling's position, but at the mo he is more of a utility/gap plugger as a backup ruck, HF link man and deep forward.

Then Schache is the best! Beautiful kick and he can be Collingwood's for the low low price of, say, your first round pick?
We will trade you Darcy Moore, a forward reject for your exquisite kick. His kick really is a thing of poetry, isn't it?

Good thread, reckon I'd go:

1. Aaron Naughton - Dogs have finally found a key forward, good on them. One of the best contested marks in the game, kicks goals, changes games. Hasn't had a massive 2020 but played his best games against the better performing clubs in 2019 - 5 goals against Richmond, 4 against the Cats. 7 brownlow votes last year as a 19yo key forward is a massive return.

2. Charlie Curnow - Just behind Naughton. Some reliability concerns but when he's up and running he is a big, strong endurance athlete who can take a contested grab. Very hard to match up on.

3. Max King - Think he'll be the better of the King brothers and they both look like stars. Big, strong, athletic, agile. Could be the best of this list with time.

4. Ben King - Similar attributes to his brother but going on junior form Max will be the better of the two.

5. Oscar Allan - Just ahead of Todd Marshall because he can ruck as well

6. Todd Marshall - Has come along a mile in the last year or two. Port's drafting has been brilliant.

7. Sam Weideman - Takes marks, kicks straight, which is all you can really ask for. Good player but unreliable.

8. Eric Hipwood - Hasn't come along like Brisbane might have liked but still has a lot of very promising attributes. If he can put some strength on between now and age 26-27 he could still be a very good player.

9. Harry McKay - patches of good form where he has looked promising but goes missing a lot, too. Might not have it between the ears.

10. Nick Larkey - haven't seen enough of him, Tom McCartin - haven't seen enough of him

Naughton has certainly played the most impressive games of the young crop, but they pretty much all came last year. You'd think if he can do that in his second year he'll be able to get going again in the future with a good run with injury and some more experience. You never know though, Cam McCarthy did kick 35 goals in his second year.

With my obvious bias I'd pick Max first, then Ben with Naughton third. Weid has been a strong performer this season but has a few years on the others - in season six I expect the first three to all be kicking more than 2 goals per game. Larkey is tracking nicely and any team would be happy to have him. Curnow is a game-breaker but the injuries are a bit concerning. Hipwood threatens to become a star but right now he's just going okay. Oscar Allen performing very well for a young forward/undersized backup ruck. Georgiades is a dark horse - looks like a natural forward and is going very well for an 18 year old.

It's amazing to think that we have this glut of gun tall forwards coming through now, yet three (almost) consecutive number one picks in Patton, Boyd and McCartin turned out to be varying degrees of flops, not to mentioned Josh Schache at pick 2 the following year.

I'd like to see Peter Wright get a crack at it somewhere else. He's shown plenty over the journey but clearly the suns prefer to get games into King. If they won't give us Ben I'd wouldn't mind stealing 2MP to form an awesome forward/ruck combo with Marshall after Ryder retires.

People writing Charlie off have short memories, R13 2019 Charlie and Naughton played on the same ground,
Charlie kicked 7.1 and looked unstoppable, Naughton kicked 1.3
People sleeping on Curnow big time, has massive talent.

1. Charlie
2. Ming
3. Naughton
4. McKay
5. Bing
6. Hipwood
7. Weideman

Curnow will be 24 the next time he plays a game. Can he really be considered a young player anymore?

Probably helped Charlie's case that he was playing on Zaine Cordy while Naughton was on Weitering bahahaha

If the question was who is most likely to have a 400 goal career I’d say Ben King followed by Max King and then some gap.

If it was 600+ I’d say Max King followed by Ben King and no one else really in the frame at this stage.

Completely different to playing a game of professional footy. Adam Cooney had a similar knee injury and he wasn't expected to repeat sprint, fly for marks, wrestle with defenders like a key forward is and he was never the same.

Cooney was an explosive beast, big bodied and had serious pace, at he’s best he was a freak, he was always on the heavy side, which probably didn’t help, but the pressure put on his knees running, sprinting, twisting and turning at full speed, would have been off the charts.
I’d say medical treatment for these kind of injuries, would have advanced a long way in the last 10-15 years too

He was fantastic that day, but over the course of the season Curnow and Naughton's stats were very similar, despite Curnow being nearly 3 years older.

charlie is only 2 draft years ahead of naughton. Last season was extremely injury interrupted for him hurting his knee (bone bruising) in round 2 and missing 3-4 games and not really getting going until Round 10 where he then kicked 14 goals in 4 games before getting injured again.

His 3rd season was more consistent where kicked 3+ goals on about 5 occasions and around 35 goals a year in a struggling team.

let’s hope he can get back next year and have a consistent run with no injuries, as well as naughton as they have both shown potential to be super players.

very hard to split them with their body of work so far

Have to factor that max missed nearly all his draft year and last year. So almost 2 years behind development wise.
Yep missed well over 12 months with an ACL and then had an ankle syndismosis injury last year, so to be the main man in a top 6 teams forward line, at 202cm, after all that, and at just 19yo, is a hell of an effort.

The big tall giraffes almost always take the longest to develop, so both the Kings are likely to be at least a couple of years away from really hitting their straps consistently.

Still think the Kings are the best followed by Charlie. Naughton is a fantastic aerialist but hes not a great kick nor does he get too much penetration. Kings seem to easily slot them through from 50. Once the King bro's bulk up they will be almost impossible to stop
Yep, the Kings seem almost the "complete package" types, whereas Naughtons kicking is significantly inferior, which looks the chink in his armour.

I haven't watched much of Ben, but I've been amazed at the distance Max gets with seemingly little effort on his kicks, and he's been very accurate as well.

He kicks the long ones off just a short runup and seems to put little effort into them, yet they go a hell of a way.

One such kick 2 games ago was measured at 61.8m (according to AFL 360), and he kicked one from the 50m line in one of the televised preseason games which went through at 3/4 post height.

He is a freak, no doubt about it, both of them have that watch winner DNA, when there on, pretty much unstoppable.
You guys are going to have one hell of a forward line in the next few years, also have JUH to add too, wow ! going to be a nightmare for opposition back lines.
