Recommitted Clayton Oliver [UFA 2030] - clubs are interested, Melbourne willing for the right price

That's okay, agree to disagree. You're entitled to it. But as good as the goals are, missing shots on goal are essentially turnovers and often result in 2 goal swings. And I don't think you can put horrendously inaccurate people in the forward line. I think Oliver would kick just as many there if given the role.

No he wouldn't, not a hope in hell.

Petracca kicks goals and creates goals on a greater scale than Oliver.

Also you're overrating Oliver defensively.

Yeah, he does. He also misses goals on a far greater scale. how can you not put any weight into that considering we basically just lost a flag purely because of poor goal kicking and Petracca is the worst shot for goal out of the 400 or so players in the afl.

There's more to defending than tackling, also he does not have a thirst for chasing. He's not different to any other top line midfielder in that regard.
There are a lot of top line midfielders who have a thirst for chasing. Rowell is one, peak Tom Mitchell is another.

You don't see the shortcomings of petracca the way that I do though because admittedly you don't watch petracca as closely as I do. Petracca can play forward? somewhat. He can take a good overhead mark, yes. But he's the worst kick for goal in the entire competition over the last 3 years. Horrific kicking. Diabolical. Worst ball drop in the entire comp. Now, compare Petracca with Oliver as a pure mid? You can't. Oliver smashes him in terms of clearance, contested ball, pure inside mid craft, handball, vision etc. Now compare them defensively? You can't. Oliver smashes him in terms of being a defensively, 2-way runner, better tackler etc.
Do you think your mob would accept a future 2nd for him? Seems like he's pretty ordinary but we need a bit of M/F bench depth. Perhaps you could cover a bit of his salary too just to make the deal fair?

Bayley Fritsch and Tom McDonald missing simple shots in the final minutes against Collingwood cost us a flag.

Does Petracca need to be improve his goal kicking? Yeah of course but his primary job is being a midfielder.

Also Oliver is just as woeful on set shots, he just doesn't get them as often because he can't play forward.

But you can't have it each way. as a pure mid, Oliver is head and shoulders and as a forward Petracca has been the worst kick for goal over a 3 year period. So it's not a small sample size. He's the worst in the entire league.

He's not head and shoulders above Petracca as a mid at all, Petracca is far more damaging and creates more scoring shots.

There's literally more to defence than just tackling, high tackle numbers don't mean great defender.
Agreed. It is a good starting point but not even close to enough.

The terrible thing is we don't have the data to properly analyse defensive efforts. The clubs do though, and that is part of why BNFs sometimes give weird results.

For plebs like us we just need to use our eyes, as unreliable as that is.
