James Worpel [signs 2 year deal]

Slightly angry reactions there. Can you find literally anything solid connecting us to an intent to get him outside the Hawks board? Because I've seen literally nothing.
It would be odd that they would have no interest in a 24yo inside ball winner given that position of the list and the track record of targeting Geelong falcons players.

We do, but usually if we are targeting a specific Falcon rumour gets ahead of the media. Tight knit community and hard to keep a lid on those things. We've never heard anything. Nothing.

Secondly Worpel is in a slightly weird bracket. Too young to be a stopgap, no second position to move to when better kids come through. He has always made less sense at the cats than he does at Hawthorn.

Yes the no second position is an issue. I always thought he could make a decent forward pocket. Strong, tackles hard, can win a stoppage and hack snap for goal is a decent option from the pocket more so than from centre square!

If people relied on info from just Big Footy

The AFL forums would be a terribly boring place

And no anger

Just stating facts

Geelong enquired @ the end of 2020

I doubt we enquired when we had 3 draft targets we wanted (Bruhn, O. Henry and Holmes), and Jez Cameron as well. Would make no sense - especially coming off a Grand Final loss. Would not have had the capital, and his year wasn't that great in 2020 compared to his B+F, Tom Mitchell'less year in 2019.

Be very surprised if we did, but you never know.

Bullet dodged if we did. Wouldnt get a game at geelong once our players are back from injury and will get overtaken by others at Hawthorn
Really? He has had a better year than all your mids apart from danger pre injury. guthries close to cooked, bruhn looks ordinary, parfitt has gone backwards at a rate of knots, Atkins is an ok defensive mid, don’t even know if menegolas still alive.

Bruhn is 💩. Worpel is twice the player he is. When both their career’s are finished, Worps would have had a far superior career, comfortably.

Pretty much all our mids have lost substantial time to injury. It would be concerning if Worpel didn't look better.

But he's still right. He wouldn't have been best 22 up to now. He also won't be best 22 when a new batch of mids comes through that can compete. Recruiting him would be like the reverse of you guys pushing out JOM.

Let's wait and see there. Worpel had one really good year where he was dropped into a highly functioning team and when the team stopped performing he looked below afl level. Now he has a midfield around him that is performing well in periods, Worpel looks like he's performing well in periods.

Cats midfield this year has been so thin it's comfortably been the 2nd worst on paper for large stretches. You drop Worpel into that midfield then he, like Parfitt, would get dropped to the 2s.

He's fringe like Parfitt. Will be overtaken by better players at Hawthorn
I get where you’re coming from, he’s not the sexiest player out there. He’s all grunt, in and under hardball gets and then feeds to other players ( making them look sexy) but he’s definitely not a fringe player and IMO wouldn’t be at a lot of teams.

You could have been describing Parfitt last year. Main issue is he can only play midfield - from what I have seen. He has a bad game and you are basically down a player and he soaks up all the midfield minutes from better players.

He would be the Cat's best midfielder right now.

Laughable to think he would be fringe like Parfitt.
With our injuries he would get a game. He wouldnt get a game ahead of Dangerfield, Guthrie, Atkins, Blicavs, Duncan or Holmes if they are available. He can only play midfield - he would be stuck in the VFL with players like Bruhn when we have a full list available.

Are you being genuine saying that Atkins, a 28 year old who struggles to get the pill 20 times a game, would be clearly playing ahead of Worpel? I know we tend to overrate our own but be reasonable now.

You've also listed a bunch of players that your own team would prefer be in other roles. Duncan and Holmes are wasted as inside midfielders, I'm sure Dangerfield would prefer to spend more of his twilight years in the forward line and Blicavs' main advantage is his versatility. It's your lack of genuine midfielders that is forcing those blokes into less impactful roles.

Even with that said, how long do you expect most of those blokes to play? Over half the blokes you've listed are, at most, a few years off retirement.

In simpler terms... don't be ******* stupid.

He'd be the best midfielder on your team by the length of the Flemington this year.
Now do the last couple of years where he has been dropped multiple times in one of the worse performing clubs in the league. Bloke can't hit the side of a barn and can't play any other position.

Our midfield has been VFL level with injuries, of course he would get a game right now.

He was playing way too heavy in 2021 and 2022. Our S&C team completely read the situation wrong. Trimmed down this year and is back to his best.

Actually has some agility (he had none two years ago) to step away from traffic rather than try and run through people every time.

He's having his best season since his B&F year. Based on performance in 2023 he'd be best 22 for most midfields, let alone a VFL standard one in 2023 Geelong.

Worpel getting a game at Geelong is an understatement. He'd be comfortably your best midfielder in 2023.
