Clarko love the players he brought to Hawthorn much more than the ones we drafted.
He mentioned how our good start to the year was so pleasing for the players who have been at the club a long time - JOM, Mitchell, Wingard, Frosty (yes, really), Gunners, and Shiels. Given there are 10 - 12 draftees who have been there much longer than Frost, I thought it was a strange call.

over the years i have liked ranking the Hawthorn List, i have not done it in the last couple of years i think, i enjoy doing it, you can tell me your thoughts or where you think i might have got it wrong, its subjective and just an opinion

1. James Sicily - i think he is our best player atm, has been in our top 5 for a few years now
2. Dylan Moore - not only kicks goals, but works his way down the ground, incredible running capacity
3. Jack Gunston - has been a little inaccurate, but when in form is a match winner
4. Jai Newcombe - theres a bit more development to go, but he has been huge this year
5. Changkuoth Jiath - his intercept marking and runs from defence give us a strong counter-attacking game
6. Mitch Lewis - is in career best form, averaging 3 goals a game and giving us strong structure
7. Jack Scrimshaw - interceptor and run from defence, makes a good partnership with CJ
8. Luke Breust - having another productive year, he lacks pressure as a sml forw, but is a good finisher
9. Tom Mitchell - still having an influence, but our midfield is being re-worked this year
10. Sam Frost - our best KPD atm, we rely on him every week and he does a good job playing in a side that loses the midfield contest often
11. Will Day - has the talent to be higher and shows that sometimes, but has been injured and has not put enough weight on to have a strong affect on contests, so improvement to be had
12. Jaegar O'Meara - has played as a forward and in the midfield when we need a strong body in there
13. Blake Hardwick - our best small shut down defender, very under rated player
14. Lachlan Bramble - come back from an injury and is in ok form, hoping to see more run and dash from him like he showed last year
15. Chad Wingard - can be a match winner, but can also look for free kicks, he can be placed anywhere from 9th-20th depending on his form or mindset
16. Jacob Koshitzke - i think he has come in since Lewis was injured and given us a competitive and dangerous forward
17. Harry Morrison - has had a great year so far this year, has been clean with skills on the outside
18. Ben McEvoy - was named captain and unfortunately got injured which left us low on rucks, has been great for us over the years
19. Conor Nash - has transformed himself into a inside mid and now part time ruck
20. Connor MacDonald - has been great as a half forw/mid, he has silky skills and a confidence to take chances that usually pay off
21. Josh Ward - strong running mid who is a genuine 2 way runner, when he does get the footy makes good decisions, has taken a few hits as well and bounced back from them
22. Denver Grainger-Barras - learning his craft, looks the goods, aggressive and good in the air, but still physically under developed and its holding him back a little from dominating
23. Jarman Impey - coming back from injury has been a little up and down in form, has great run from defence
24. Tom Phillips - good competitive winger who is being played in the VFL to develop youngsters to strengthen the squad
25. Ned Reeves - before his injury showed he could ruck by himself with good effect, isnt the greatest around the ground, but he is getting there
26. Max Lynch - another ruck who has genuine ability, a more combative ruck that is good around the ground, its hard to split Reeves and Lynch at this stage
27. James Worpel - his form is all over the place, nearly dropped recently, averaging 16 disposals as an experienced mid is a worry at this stage
28. Liam Shiels - still has some value to add, but is being played at VFL level to give younger guys a chance to strengthen the squad
29. Finn Maginness - slowly developing nicely, soon could rise into the early 20's, but want to see more examples of good form first
30. Sam Butler - another that lacks disposals, but moves beautifully and can kick a goal, he was great against a weak Essendon VFL team
31. Ned Long - has been strong defensively in the midfield at VFL level, could do with more disposals
32. Emerson Jeka - was back to his best recently, but got injured with a hamstring
33. Tyler Brockman - prior to the season i thought he would establish himself in the first 22, but has been in bad form and then injured
34. Josh Morris - is playing well at Box Hill, playing half back, can play wing and forward when needed
35. Daniel Howe - has had a horrible year so far at VFL and AFL level, just seems out of form
36. Jackson Callow - has been played as part time ruck and marking target forward, has been doing OK in that role
37. Jai Serong - had a couple good games early in the year, but since has been a bit average, lots of room for improvement, developing
38. Jack Saunders - playing as a wing, running flanker, unsure on whether he can make the next step, but could be a good State Leaguer
39. Connor Downie - has had a lot of injuries and is starting to find some form at VFL level, enjoys the bigger grounds, concern about his contested game
40. Seamus Mitchell - has found a new home as a half back, can run off half back and is a neat kick, but shys away from contests
41. Kyle Hartigan - could be a good KPD if injuries, but i think this might be his last year?
42. Fionn O'Hara - has only played half a pre-season game i think, so cant quite rate him, but when i saw him play he looked good from the small sample i saw.

Thought this list may have got some thoughts going, very surprised it didn't.

I think this is one of the fairest reviews of the clubs list I have read anywhere, sure I would debate you on the level of BB, Reeves and maybe 1 or 2 others but it would be more looking for something toi disagree with.

For the record I think BB's value is very limited and only through others covering for him can he make a significant impact, his ruck work has diminished, his mobility is ordinary.
Where as Reeves even in his baby steps to his career his loss has been noticeable, with him still in the side I think the Swans & Bummers losses would not have happened, our mids were just starting to look like they were getting confident of being proactive and looked much better for it

Great list work Davo

Lol the idea that Clarkos gonna waltz into his next gig and pay overs for our 30yo + hawks boys is fantasy stuff. His loyalty to them ended the day he walked out of the club, and he knew their limitations more than anyone- it probably helped cost him his job. The only one he’d entertain is Sicily you’d think but the timing doesn’t seem to work.

Given lack of ability to get a deal done or get players to move (Breust/chad) last year anything that helps us get a deal done is a positive step.

Gws offered a late first for chad - but he wouldn’t leave. If we were offered that again and chad wanted to go we’d take it.

Spot on. Same with Breust. But these guys want to stay.
Having said that, Clarko has been known to pull some crazy moves if he thinks it would buy them a flag.

Think last year we planned to move on two senior players. If we try again (and succeed) plus likely retirement of BB, shiels and delist of howe that’s a decent hole in our list. Probably then makes any FAs more replacements of senior bodies than ‘top-ups’.

Excellent analysis 👍

Personally I would have Bruest ranked a bit lower as he is a one dimensional player these days (no forward pressure, doesn't take màny marks, etc).

Apart from that pretty spot on 👌

One thing a detailed analysis/ranking of our list like this does is drive home how shalliw our current midfield stocks are.

If you did the same analysis for top side s like Melbourne and Brisbane I bet around half of their top ten players would be midfielders!

Shows we still need to hit the draft hard looking for miss in the coming drafts.

Great analysis. And to me personally these rankings are spot on.

To me this list says two things.

Firstly, as much as our recruiting has burnt us, especially during Graham Wright's twilight years. Our drafting has been phenomenal. When you look at the whole competition and draft strike rates, we have barely wasted any picks. Credit is due not just to our scouting and drafting people though, this probably speaks just as much to our Box Hill and development staff.

Secondly, even though we lost the Essendon the way we did. We are still overachieving with this list. When a young team is greater than the sum of it's parts it is a very very good sign. In recent years, 'young' teams with almost unfair amounts of talent on their list could never quite play football that was greater than the sum of its parts - Carlton, GWS, Gold Coast before the exodus of its inugural draft crops.

Stay the course, we are doing well. It's really pleasing.

We can dream

Untouchable players:

Backs - Day, Sicily, CJ, DGB, Scrimshaw, Bramble

Mids - Newcombe, Ward, MacDonald

Forwards - Lewis, Moore, Butler

Some players won't be moved due to either being recently recruited, lack of value, or due to our lack of depth in their respective positions - Frost, Hardwick, Lynch, Reeves, Kosi, Maginess, Mitchell, Impey, Downie, Callow, Jeka

For everyone else, we should be exploring options to move them at a reasonable price.

I think adding Bramble, Ward CMAC and Butler in the untouchables is a bit premature. They might be in the other list below along with reeves etc

Be curious to give this same list to someone outside the club and see if you get the same result.
I do think people in here view players with rose colored glasses.
The "for sale" sign was out last year on the trade table.......it wasn't just the midfield that was offered up.
The list was there for all takers.
Not a lot of trades done.
Ceglar...O'Brien. ??
You have put Gunston at no 3.

2019 he kicks 26 goal for season.
2020 he wins the Peter Crimmins Medal kicking 31 goals for the season ???????
2021 -injured.
2022 -8 games in for 14 goals with our best forward out and demanding the footy

BTW - 2018 he kicked 51 goals for the year.

If people rate this highly....we are in for a world of pain.

The value is dropping and he would be one i would trade.

Won’t get any trade value outside the untradeables as noted

I hope we have a massive offer on the table for Angus Brayshaw and a considerable offer on the table for Amon.

Adding these two would completely change our list.

In 2020 Gunston came sixth in the Coleman medal averaging 1.94 goals per game (16 games) in a bottom of the ladder side. Recall that there were less games and shorter games played through the season. Tom Hawkins won the Coleman medal kicking 42 goals in 17 home and away games at an average of 2.33 in a team that made the grand final.

If Gunston was kicking at the same level of accuracy he would be kicking around 2.14 goals per game. So his firm is good, just not his goal kicking accuracy. We need to see how the season plays out to know if his accuracy will recover. Small numbers always skew the true number.

I can see us throwing more coin at Brayshaw considering his age profile. He's right in that zone for us. Plus has the talent/ experience. We could also offer him a permanent midfield spot. The Dees can't.

Would offset the loss of Tom or JOM, should they leave.
