NRL NRL 2023 - Grand Final Penrith vs Brisbane

Kevin Walters will have bad memories of the Northern end of Accor Stadium. That's the part of the ground where Thurston kicked the winning field goal in the 2015 GF*, James Tedesco scored the series winning try in the 2019 Origin series decider and it's the end of the ground where Penrith scored those 3 second half tries.

* Walters was assistant to Wayne Bennett

Bloody hell it would be a very painful feeling being a Lions/Broncos supporter right now.

What a s**t weekend for you lot.

Corey Parker looked inconsolable and on the verge of tears on Fox League's post game. Not even the presence of Lara Pitt is enough to cheer him up.
Yeah i genuinely thought he was going to break down at one point, being on t.v was the last thing the poor guy wanted to be at that moment.

Minor premiers doesn't count for sh*t, no one remembers the minor premiers only the premiers.

The Broncos looked like being premiers with about 20 minutes left to go but then they relaxed and opened the door for the Panthers.

I don't think they did that much wrong though, Cleary just went to another level, was the instigator in 2 of their tries and scored the winner.
Nah they did plenty wrong.

Carrigans drop, Walsh out of position twice, Arthars and Cobbo not killing Crichton at the line.

Penrith we’re good but the Broncos has a stack of minor and major brain fades. They lost it.

Was only a metre off being perfect, he’s very good at it. Have more an issue with that dumb set at 24-8 it really should never have got close from there but the inexperience told.
This, absolutely this was where the game was there to be put to bed.. Yeah there was other errors in the 2nd half and cleary was ridiculous in the last 20 mins. But if broncos don't muck around throwing stupid passes or offloads and just compete that set or get a drop out, then they run another few minutes off the clock, things could've been so different

Said it last night and again this morning.

20 to go 16 up all we needed was 5 minutes of head down bum up footy. 5 tackles, kick to a corner and chase. Slow it down, ice the game.

We couldn’t do it and Cleary for all his brilliance (and make no mistake, he was brilliant) wouldn’t have had the time to mount the comeback.

Reynolds was the one for me, had a poor night in general but he’s the leader with a lot of youth around him. Needed a cooler head.

Panthers didn't get back to Penrith until 2am apparently.

Moses Leota best-on in the celebrations according to Michelle Bishop on sen, said he was unintelligible lol

Coach Cleary well-oiled on today this morning too

And the official celebration kicked off 18 min ago at Bluebet stadium geez

He also won a grand final there though (not sure which end the various happenings took place) as a player

That was the best game of rugby league I have watched when I think about everything that made up the narrative.

  • it was a grand final. Intensity goes up tenfold
  • one team absolutely clinically gave it to the other for 25 minutes but the inferior team scrapped their way to relative parity and hung in when they looked gassed
  • same team managed to find a way to more or less level the scores by playing out the half and scoring on the bell
  • rare and uncharacteristic error (a kick that went dead from around halfway from Cleary) gives Brisbane a bit of early momentum in the second
  • 10 minute burst of freak individual brilliance (Mam) aided by Reece Walsh flips the game on its head completely.
  • crucial moment arrives when the panthers challenge that strip penalty. They lost it and were never going to win it but the more I think about it, the more I think Cleary wanted to try and just basically take a time out and stop the momentum.
  • Crichton pounces on that loose ball. Soon after Cleary scores to breathe a bit of life into the game. Complete momentum shift even though Luai has just gone off injured
  • Penrith are getting their nose through the defence with every run, on the back of 3 big charges Cleary nails a 40-20 and lays the groundwork for Crichton’s try soon after.
  • Cleary and seemingly all his teammates take turns in last tackle kicks, eventually leading to the Reynolds drop out that Cleary ensures goes OOF
  • Cleary scores the game winner

In and around all of that, Payne Haas plays a lone hand for his forward pack in the first half, makes 160-odd metres and makes 30-odd tackles without missing one, the Panther props continually bash their opponents, the speed of the game is incredible, players are going off for head injuries, Luai does his shoulder, and Reynolds in one of the all time grand final acts of ticker, stays out with what looks like a torn groin muscle (wasn’t quite that serious in the end but no doubt he doesn’t even consider playing on in any other scenario).

It was just an amazing game of footy

So a very risky play that gave the ball away in a dangerous position.

How the * are you defending the decision to go for it? He doesn't do that, they very likely win. For all your talk about being a betting man, that's a pretty poor understanding of risk vs reward.

Yeh, even a short kickoff would have made more sense than trying to nail the sideline kick.

Reynolds is a smart enough footballer to know that if you keep inviting a team as good as Penrith to start sets 20-30m out from your line it’s almost inevitable, especially in the back end of a game unlike the first 20 when Broncos were still defending with energy, that they will score or at worst earn another drop out and ramp that pressure up. He’s attempted two short ones already and one failed miserably and one led to a Penrith try.

His other options are stab for the sideline or pump it long and meet them around the 30 and invite that pressure.

Maybe he was looking too hard for the miracle play but I don’t think there was a heap wrong with it

You kick it long it’s the same things teams are quite used to defending set lines. The blame falls earlier when they had 24-8 and played a dreadful 5mins. That’s where it was lost not a kick at the end.

Even just completing the set getting tackled in the corner. You invited a great team back in when you didn’t have to

Didnt seem very smart last night when he ****ed up a 1 in 100 play twice in a row and kicked on the fourth into a breeze straight down the oppos throat.

He had a bad night and ultimately when you lose those errors are magnified.

Also worth remembering the amount of work Brisbane did in the first half just to stay in the game doesn’t come without its price. They were gassed

Shouldn’t have. One to it if they weren’t so dumb at 24-8 in that set. Said it to my dad at the time that was an arrogant set and it cost them

It’s not 1 in 100 though.

It’s actually very very very small odds that he actually strikes an attempted stab drop-kick well enough to pump it flat that far without touching the ground. The most likely outcome generally is that it will scrub along the ground and just end up with a player being tackled in a fairly normal part of the field

Just wonder whether that tackle in the first half might have had a groin injury wouldn’t be shocked if he took an injection at HT.

Which would be the same outcome as a regular drop out.

What he attempted to do is a 100-1 outcome and what happened with one was what you described and the other went OOF.

It wasnt a smart decision and it wasnt good execution.

His first short drop out he did perfectly and Herbie and co ****ed it up.

With a lead you dont need to be doing 100-1 s**t, you need to be executing fundamentals, we didnt, we lost.
