I don’t ever remember Hawke being the Australian equivalent of Martin Luther King, though. Would anyone describe him as an advocate for civil rights? If he calls it out privately or wages their own war against it, that’s commendable but it shouldn’t be seen as the most impressive thing about a person who has held public office.

But Hawke did nothing of substance that anyone can point to to say he was a catalyst for social reform. The most anyone could say was that he looked into a treaty between the government and native Australians.

It’s just an extremely odd thing to say about a person who has held public office as the most impressive thing about them. You can bet when Abraham Lincoln died people weren’t saying the most impressive thing about him was that he didn’t cop racism - and he did abolish slavery.
When he was ACTU boss he organised protests against South African sporting teams to help put pressure on them to end apartheid. He stood up to China on Tianamen Square and gave refuge here for students. This was big at the time as it ran against public sentiment and shouldn't just be downplayed as not copping racism. Bit of a throw away line from Cassidy.

Even still I think to say this was what he should be remembered for severely downplays some of his other achievements.

I actually think it's worse now than it was in the 80s.

in some ways i think you're right. it was less politically correct back then, but i don't think neo-nazi's and the far right had as much of a presence. sure they were around then, but it was all pretty underground. they're right out in the open now thanks to trump and the like, fraser anning is a senator ffs.

Barry Cassidy had been a journo in Canberra for 15-20 years before Hawke asked him to be his press secretary for 5 years or so and has then continued to watch politics for 28 years since then.

He was making a comment about the blokes personal integrity not about his policies. He was asked what did he learn from Hawke when asked about his time working for him.

He was going to give a personal answer, not one about the policies and great changes he made to the country. Barry's answers is about what human qualities Hawke had, that touched him the most. That's not about his CV of political achievements. Barry probably had seen plenty of racist people in politics, and those in a position to do something about it, but didn't.

He personally saw Hawke lead the fight for financial sanctions, not just economic and trade sanction, but banking and movement of monies sanctions to help get rid of apartheid in South Africa. That tactic is now standard done by the UN and the west in trying to control dodgy regimes. Today, the Iran Nuclear deal is being debated because those financial and banking sanctions tactics Hawke helped devise, crippled Iran and forced them to give up their nuclear weapons strategy, but have said they will go back to building bombs if the US reimposes them.

How old were you in 1988? I went to Canada for a year in May, so I wasn't in Oz for the nuances of the debate, but John Howard was proposing racist immigration policies of severely limiting immigration based on race , and specifically cutting back and restricting Asian immigration. It was a cheap, easy, nasty populist policy. But Hawke said no way will I let him get away with that, and let it fester, and contrary to advise, Hawke went after him, straight out, calling out him a racist. It wasn't even dog whistling like you get today by Howard. I may have been travelling, but when I read the papers at consulates I got the gist of what was going on and after Hawke's attack on Howard, he become Mr 18% by the end of 1988 as per this famous Bulletin cover page.

Howard was kicked out as oppo leader in May 1989. Tienanmen square massacre happened a few weeks later. What would have been Howard's response to those then 20,000 students in Oz at the time compared to Hawke giving them permanent residency?? What would Australia be like if Howard was PM and introduced his anti-asian immigration policies?? Would Australia have had a minerals and trade boom with China this century? Would Port be playing games of footy in China? I think not.

Howard was sent to purgatory for his racist views thanks to Hawke being prepared to do what no other national leader had done up to that time. Howard did a bit of a Hawkie after losing the leadership, hit the bottle hard, reassessed himself and as his electorate of Bennelong - especially Lane Cove, North Ryde, Chatwsood, Epping etc became more Asian, he faced reality and changed.

Hawke calling out Howard's racism helped him, it meant he got the chance to be PM in a lot better economic times.

For the last two weeks we've been hammered by 'Nicole' from the (non) NBN network. This well spoken lady has been threatening to cut us off the NBN and Telstra if I don't press #1 key within 24 hours and speak to a 'technician' to rectify the as yet undefined problem.

The scammers ring from several different phones both mobiles and land line. In any case, we never answer to unknown numbers.

'Nicole's' voice is quite authoritative and undoubtably would scare some folk into supplying personal details only to discover money is gone forever.

Apparently it's just one of several NBN scams.

Yeah i get scammers on the mobile all the time now, it is always around 6-7 pm. Apparently if you don't answer and let it go to message bank they give up after a while.

You all complain about Melbourne bias in the media. Here, it is the same thing. I have just watched highlights of Brazil's 1981 soccer Grand Final. It was São Paulo v Grêmio.

The broadcasting crew seems to be calling an international game, Grêmio being the foreign side. Grêmio won, 1-0. It was our first national title. There is no need to understand Portuguese. The emotion on the voices tells it all:

LOL I'm getting emails from scammers who pretend to be my bank that say 'We've blocked a payment from China' and for me to enable two step authentication now.

Too bad for them I already HAVE two step authentication on my account (all new transactions must be verified by SMS) and I know that banks never send emails with links to their website. It even ******* says that they don't in the scam email that they've just copy pasted from an official one. How stupid must people be to fall for this stuff?

Washing machines must be vying for the most boring need to buy things imaginable.. my old one is leaking & also starting to dance across the floor during the spin cycle.

I wanna spend money on fun things dammit!

You know you're an adult when instead of buying the shiniest, flashiest thing you can, you spend time researching and comparing to what is best bang for your buck.

Don't just accept it as there is plenty of things that Doctors can do.

Get yourself to a sleep specialist. They tour regional areas so you may have to wait or you can take yourself to Adelaide. There are stay in treatments or even medication.

Deprivation of sleep is a form of torture and will adversely impact on your health long term and the happiness of your family. Don't accept the ******** advice of old people that some babies don't sleep. I put up with it and i was a zombie for 3 years. I just accepted that was being a parent - it's not. You and your partner deserve sleep and it is not good for your baby not to get enough quality sleep.

The problem is we can see she is sleepy, she is tired, she's showing signs, we do the things we are taught... nup. She knows it too and she fights it and wins, she kicks and punches her way out of it and stimulates herself. It feels really hard to talk about to someone properly, they need to be there to see.

Washing is an art form being lost as the stay at home parent is eroded from society... the washing my mum can do is like all my clothes are new again. Meanwhile sometimes after I pull things out the wash they seem worse than how they went in.

I give all my Port guernseys to mum to wash still.

I am not a fan of Bob Hawke the politician at all. Anti-union, neoliberal and a class traitor.

His opinions nuking arabs have been floating around as well.

I’m sure he was a great bloke though, and his ability to supress his gag reflex while both chugging pints and corporate dicks alike was quite impressive.

RIP Hawkey

I watched a few video reviews on appliances online and nodded off for ten minutes, shopping for beige socks would be more interesting than this shite.

Yea you actually have to clean the washing machine itself sometimes... who knew.

Or it could work in reverse.

I've come to terms with the fact that Labor will win the election and the Bill ******* Shorten will be Prime Minister. Some polls are saying it is going to be close. I don't believe that at all. There's a mood for change. Libs deserve to get a smack for their shambolic dumping of Turnbull. People are sick of that stuff. I think the mood has shifted on Climate change considerably, with most people now believing in it and that we must act on it. Too many Liberal/National politicians are stuck in outdated thinking on this issue.
Boat people are no longer a wedge issue either. Labor has stated that what the Libs have done is working and they will simply continue this policy.
I don't think the Negative Gearing/ Imputation Credits is enough of an issue for the Libs to win an election on the back of.

Libs have also lost a fair bit of talent too (Turnbull/Pyne/Bishop) and some less talented (O'Dwyer) and has the feeling of Rats fleeing the sinking ship.
I hope the Right wing nasty types like Dutton and Abbott (and even Boothby's Nicole Flint) get banished, sending a clear message to the Liberals that moving to the hard right isn't the answer.
I hope they regroup and become a better party.

Have you tried the cry it out method? Some people swear against it but maybe without an alternative it's worth a try?

Yep, i remember a while ago doing some research and comparisons on vacuums and trying to cut through the "OMG Dyson is the best thing ever" crap.

Lol. How did Sao Paulo not score at the 5:30 mark. Also the bit after that with the goal keeper is comical.
