That’s not fast at all.Yet the player I saw in the V.F.L last Saturday seemed to have a good turn of speed.I suppose it shows you shouldn’t read too much into draft camp results.
20m sprint is all about getting speed quickly from stationary, suits powerful types - some very quick runners need to wind up first. He looked like he moved very well in that VFL game.

That powerful burst speed off stationary position , is Dusty Martin and Dangerfield to a tee

He may have a poor 20m time but once moving be very quick at top speed.

Yep. A fair few draftees over the years would have been up there with Usain Bolt at the 20 metre mark of a 100 metre race. None of them would be on screen at the end of the race:

  • The first 20m of Usain Bolts 9.69 second 100m run at the 2008 Olympic Games was in 2.87 seconds.

Combine records

Joel Wilkinson2.752010
Jonathan Marsh2.782013
Danyle Pearce2.792004
Ashley Smith2.802008
Marvin Baynham2.812014

Barry Round won a Brownlow without breaking out of a slow trot (plus he had no neck).
By that comparison, this guy will be a star.

Harsh to leave out the 20m record holder...

The 20 metre sprint is often not an accurate measurement of speed/power if poor technique is used.

With the standing start often the first movement by an untrained sprinter is to shift their weight backwards in an effort to generate power.

A trained sprinter will have a better technique creating a faster time, but is not necessarily as fast if you get what I mean.

To be fair coming out of the blocks and a standing start effects those times
