Autopsy 5 point win vs St.Kilda

Haven't seen the stats but get the feeling we gifted turnovers which were capitalised upon. I thought Blakey, Roberts and Wicks were particularly guilty with a few terrible moments. Roberts needs a spell in the VFL - has been very ordinary most season. I would consider playing Blakey up the field, maybe even a second go at CHF given our lack of tall forwards. I think he is really struggling under Cox's philosophy of defence first given he is an attacking player who is a pretty lousy defender.

The whole game you'd think we were on top of the ladder and they were on the bottom with how they were all carrying on on Fox.

Dwayne with “this means so much for the Swans Season but probably means more to the Saints for their pride” something close to that

Funnily, I felt like we were out coached all game.

Was the lift from the players and a difference in talent that was the deciding factor in the end.

Really glad to see Buller keep developing, had a great game today.

Not a lot of love for Hamling today. I thought he was superb, not flashy but doesn't get beaten and positions himself so well. High IQ player. I can't recall him getting beaten at all today. Played his part along with Melican.
He is far less likely to make a panic move that Tommy. I agree. Hi footy IQ.

I gotta say, I did not like our players getting into a fourth-gamer for a few mistakes he made.

I get the logic - get into the head of the kid, distract the opposition a bit, etc.

And maybe I'd be OK with it if we were flying and it was just part of a weekly strategy to get in our opposition's heads.

But we have been absolute shite for large chunks of this season and aren't in any position to be rubbing errors into the opposition's faces, especially a kid.

And like clockwork, it basically became a turning point in the game, with St Kilda perking up from that moment on while we unravelled thereafter.

Just hate it.

I don't think the umpiring favoured one team or the other that much, but it is just bad ... period.

So many 50/50 contests are paid as free kicks, and then the exact same thing happens and it isn't a free kick.

One or two wouldn't be a big deal, but it is over and over again through the entire game. To the point where I have no idea what is a free kick and what isn't.

Can you hold in the ruck? or can you not? Can you smash into someone with front on contact, or can you not? If there is a forward and defender both holding each other, who gets the free kick? It seems completely random.
Yeah agree. It just feels one sided during a game because we are all one eyed, and there are always little runs where one team gets a few shockers in a row.

I haven’t checked but I am sure the Saints board is seething about the umpires too.

I don’t know why they don’t get told “if you are unsure, don’t blow the whistle”. That game would have been fine with less than half of the free kicks paid. Just play the ones that matter.

How does the 12 day concussion protocol work for Tommy?

Today's the 13th.

Game against Giants is on the 25th - can he play (if ok of course)??

Personally being at the game, I felt it was more over umpired all day rather than biased in any teams direction. A lot of decisions made by the non-controlling umpire which showed umpires were in the wrong place all day.

Very frustrating stop start game that played into the Saints hands and forced us to dig deep in the last quarter especially. Hayward really stood up to win the game for us and Grundy and Gulden were important late.
There was a classic ump eff up at one stage (Q3?) where the ump was loafing in the corridor and a Saints player nailed a bullet pass that would have taken his head off except he hit the deck face down. Their positioning all day was atrocious. Dropped marks paid, marked balls not, holding the man all day long etc etc etc. Just dreadful.

Not many games you’ll see so badly impacted by shit umpiring decisions - guesses, poor non calls, hurried wrong calls - it was a festival for the PISS POOR!

Complaining won't help while they’re part-time - and therein lies the problem.

They have the option to ‘sook it up’ - threaten to go back to their day job.

Make them part of the system like players - more enrolments, more competition for placements, more pressure, more professionalism, more discipline = better decisions.

The umpiring issu was not so much whether it favoured one side or another, it was simply an example of over umpiring a match in its purest form

Umps need to swallow the whistle and call play on more often

Just got back from Marvel (bloody freezing!) and thought I’d go all AFL.com

7 things we learned

1. Umpire no. 13 is a cheat

2. Will Hayward plays the odd game where he’s the match-winner. Tonight was one such game. Brilliant in both offence and defence. Seems the more banged up he is, the better he performs.

3. Gus Sheldrick had a cracker. Played under significant duress & was in a lot of pain in Q3. I suspect he had to get needled up for the shoulder. That tackle on W-M was game saving. It was notable that Chad went to him at full-time and gave him an extra big hug.

4. Zone defence. Why? Q2 it was killing us & there was no shift to man-on-man. Left me a bit worried about Cox - Lyon out coached him in my view.

5. Our defence misses Rampe. Not sure there’s a leader down there in his absence. And that includes Mills.

6. Rowy stuck some absolutely critical tackles. He was instrumental in the win. Easy to under-appreciate the work he does off the ball too.

7. Grundy is in superb form. Rowan Marshall toyed with McLean - but Grundy had his measure. It was a terrific performance.

I’d never been to Marvel before, but it’s a very impressive stadium when Essendon aren’t there to stink it up.

Rampe is an interesting one. Leadership is an issue down there today

If he got concussed history suggests he is out for a month
