Prediction Best 22 for Round One, 2017

Look I get that everybody is entitled to their opinion but Grigg came fifth in last year's JD. If he's a VFL player, then we should probably just turn out the lights and find something else to do.

Yep.

Personally, I'm nonchalant about Grigg. He isn't going to win a Brownlow but he is serviceable. We'll be a better team when his pushed out of the best 22 but he also isn't our biggest problem. I don't quite understand the hate...

Grigg was our fifth best player last year. If his not best 22 in Round 1, 17 other players must have pushed past him in the pre-season. That's a pretty big pre-season.

I’ll have a swing, with the positions I’m really worried about in bold.

B: Grimes, Rance, Vlastuin – I’d bring in Batchelor against tall forward lines and send Vlastuin up to HBF.
HB: Houli, Astbury, Conca – I’m nervous about Houli and Short in the same team, defensively speaking. Conca gets first crack.
C: BEllis, Cotchin, MacIntosh – BEllis to spend more time running forward of centre and KMac to spend more time running back of centre.
HF: Caddy, Griffiths, Rioli – There will be games when a marking target (Lennon) will be a better option than a quick small (Rioli)
F: Edwards, Riewoldt, Martin –Two quiet games in a row from Edwards and Lloyd comes in.

Fol: Hampson, Prestia, Miles – It’s Hamsandwich’s position to lose
Int: Lloyd, Grigg, CEllis, Short

Astbury and Griffiths: we would improve immensely as a team if they improved this year. If either goes downhill in form or with injury, we’ll finish bottom 4.

Players I expect to see at some point:

Nankervis for Hamsandwich
Markov, Castagna, Drummond – all competing for the semi-vacant HBF
Lennon for Rioli when slightly tall up forward might be an advantage
Batchelor against tall forward lines
Menadue on a wing or HFF
Lambert – An inside mid will go down injured or in poor form at some point.
Elton – Break glass in case of emergency.

Depth / core of a VFL premiership: Maric, Soldo, Chol, Moore, Hunt, Townsend, Broad, Morris, Butler

Ohh lol. So you don't rate broad? At the start of last pre season even jack was in awe of the kid but somehow he never got games instead we played forwards and mids in defence. Lets give him all the nab games and a couple opening games to see what he has. After all he can't be any worse then the Bachelors kickout specialist Short.
Ps i'm not saying he will make it or siding with the poster just saying give him a run after all he is on the list.

You see this is where what i say/write changes alot to other peoples opinions and its difficult for me to get others to understand where i am coming from. But i will put it in simple terms as i really dont want to get into a pissing contest

What i have seen at reserves level with broad is that he is just another 2nd level footballer with nothing special to see him elevate his game to the next level that will make him a 100-150 game player

He did nothing in the VFL to inspire me in 2016

Broad was recruited as a mature-age defender - at age 22. You don't recruit mature age players to waste time in the reserves. Like Marcus Adams at the Bulldogs and Sam Collins at Fremantle, they are expected to play. Broad played two games - was fair against lowly Brisbane and poor in the other. He will get one more year to break into the side or will be on the plane back to WA. Has shown precious little at VFL level to suggest he's here for the long-term and would struggle for a place in our top 28.

So another ----up by our recruiters is what we are saying here. BTW i get what you are saying and it makes sense as i haven't seen much of the vfl team.

So why is he on the list? and why are some people puting him in the line up for? So lets see no improvement mistake picking him up and we are stuck with batchelor and short hummm all goes well lol.

YES

I don't see him as being a regular in our best 22, You need to remember that he will be 24 and not really a lot of upside here
Good lower level player imo but not really afl quality - Hope he suprises us this year if not will be delisted

My predicted best 22:

B: Vlastuin Rance Grimes
HB: B.Ellis Astbury Houli
C: Grigg Caddy McIntosh
HF: Martin Griffiths Rioli
F: Edwards Riewoldt Lloyd
FOL: Hampson Cotchin Prestia

I/C: Miles Short Markov Conca

My preferred best 22:

B: Short Rance Grimes
HB: McIntosh Astbury Houli
C: B.Ellis Caddy Vlastuin
HF: Martin Griffiths Edwards
F: Rioli Riewoldt Lloyd
FOL: Nankervis Cotchin Prestia

I/C: Miles Grigg Markov Menadue

Would also like to see Graham get a gig early and really, really hope C.Ellis shows something so that he can have a shot too.
our best 22 looks pretty s**t tbh

You all need to get used the fact that Garthwaite will play round 1.

I know it is only December but you can lock that one in
Would not surprise me in the least as far as structure goes weather he will be ready for afl thats another thing altogether.

Third tall defensive options are grimes who is always given the job on smaller types thus the need for another tall.
So the only real competition is McIntosh who they will probably play in the midfield and Garthwaite gets a game.Oh and then theres Batchelor who is not a tall and can not perfrm in the role but hey we are talking Halfwit who doesnt seem able to see it.

As I do each year during Hardwick's reign, I look forward to seeing which two, maybe three footballers the coaching guru chooses to defy logic and try and convert into "that" half back flanker we so sorely crave.
Will he again defy convention and plonk young Jack Graham across half back when the guy is a midfield clearance beast.
Maybe young Rioli will spend time across half back as the new Yarran, who we so sorely missed last year.
Perhaps Dan Butler reinvents himself and becomes THE guy!
I'd actually like to see Garthwaite play, but think he'll bide his time behind Rance, Grimes and Astbury for now.

6th Anthony Miles, 31 votes

Equal 7th Brandon Ellis, 30 votes
9th Nick Vlastuin, 29 votes
10th Brett Deledio, 28 votes
11th David Astbury, 27 votes

15th Taylor Hunt, 25 votes
16th Daniel Rioli, 21 votes
17th Bachar Houli, 18 votes
Equal 18th Ty Vickery, 15 votes
Equal 18th Steven Morris, 15 votes
20th Ben Griffiths, 14 votes

half are poor to average, many are kids and Deledio was injured.

Grigg has been in the afl for 10 years if he is not in your top10 he shouldn't be even on a list

the fact that he finished 5th after playing 22 games says more about our list and its ability than it does about Grigg as a footballer

he is an honest battler with limited weapons but has a wealth of afl experience in a team lacking leadership and that is the only reason he is in the side

the sooner the likes of Grigg, Ellis and Houli are replaced the sooner we will become a better side

Grigg, Miles & BEllis all in the top 7 2016 b&f.
Being left out of a lot of people's best 22.
Prestia & Caddy can automatically replace 2 of them I guess, but I reckon we'll still see plenty of them in 2017 until the kids push them out of the team.

Top post.
I've read the same crap about Grigg about three or four years in a row. Some people think we are a definite finals team and some were thinking this time last year we were top four, yet none of BEllis, Vlastuin, Conca, Edwards, CEllis, Hunt, Lloyd, Morris, Menadue, Lennon, Drummond, Butler, Broad, Castagna, Short has matched pace with Grigg, let alone gone past him and made him redundant.
Ink Grigg in for 22 games again this year. As Tango put a honest battler with limited weapons who brings some much needed leadership to the group.
I would hazard a guess most of the first, second ad third year players look up to Grigg and see him as a good example of how to get the most of yourself.
There are some who post here who think the best and fairest voting is either fixed or skewed and counts for nothing, but a guy who regularly finishes top five or six has got to be decent. I look at Grigg and look at Shane Edwards, who has never finished in the top five of the b&f and only top 10 twice and I see no comparison.
