But everyone needs to be reminded and most freo fans have a knowledge of this.... Freos selections of 1st round picks have not been well.

either have been injured/illness (Morabito, Apeness, Pitt)
Really more about other things than the picks per se. I'm not going to pretend we did well preferring Pitt to Darling; it was clearly a mis-judgement, and there were other good players taken after Pitt. But Pitt's injury prevents us from knowing what he might have achieved.

Substandard (Palmer, Sheridan, Crozier)
Statistically these players would be rated successes at their picks, so not sure what you are meaning. You need to compare average games played by players at their pick (plus factor in the concessions that GWS and GCSs had and the impact that had on the draft, effectively making Sheridan and Crozier second round picks).

Or just didn't work out or was lazy or wasn't committed or had off field problems (Simpson)
Definitely a bust in a concession effected draft, with the club making a move to try and get some of the precocious talent that we were desperately lacking. Not a wonderful group of players taken after this pick (Grundy the standout, but as a ruck not anywhere near a need at the time). Next most likely selections for us I think would have been Paparone, Towers or White. Ew.

Left very early (Weller)
Can't really knock this selection. At worst he is on the money for the pick he was taken at. Players sometimes move when they are offered a lot more money, and the only way to deal with it is to get good value in a trade. Tick.

Sam Sturt is a Vic Country player and played for Dandenong, so whinging about Freo’s record with Melbourne players is irrelevant.

The Dandenong Ranges aren’t exactly far from Melbourne. Dandenong the suburb (where the Stingrays play) is very much outer Melbourne really.

I’m not sure where exactly Sturt is from - could just as easy by Outer Metro or actually in the country.

So Sturt only played TAC cup?
After some eye-catching performances for Peninsula Grammar School in the Associate Grammar Schools of Victoria competition

That's where he was first seen.

Sam Sturt is a general forward from Frankston South outside of Melbourne.

My analysis is more evidence based.

Our record in drafting Melbourne kids out of the first half of the draft is terrible. I don't doubt that they liked what they saw with Sturt - just like how they liked what they saw with Sheridan, Apeness, Pitt, Crozier, Michie and Balic (that's all the Melbourne kids we drafted from 2010 to 2015 in the first 2 rounds).
None of those players are currently on our list.

Please, tell me more about how great our recruiters are.
How do you know Apeness and Pitt weren’t going to be guns and how do you also know Balic wouldn’t handle the pressure?
Genius?

You look at our list and realize we have quite a lot of short people; Ballantyne, Walters, Colyer, Switta, Giro....they can only really fill 2-3 spots in a 22.
Crowden too.

Walters and Colyer pretty much best 22 locks I think. We will be fitting that third in, hopefully Switkowski as a forward specialist.

Reckon you're making a pretty sound point when you question our drafting in the late-ish first round (it's literally impossible to argue that it's been good) and this is every bit a high-risk/high-reward pick. He's barely played any AFL and wasn't even a consideration before this year. And that's the reality.

In saying that though I think there's reason enough to be optimistic. I think the Fyfe comparisons are stupid but even if he never develops a midfield game these mid-sized forwards like him with pace/marking ability are invaluable (think the Hoskin-Elliot, Stephenson types).

I'm so upset right now. I can't even force myself to look at any of Sturt's highlights. My mother came into my room with a plate food, I slapped it out of her hand and screamed at her. Ian Hill please forgive us.

Don't make a mountain out of a molehill, Sturt will discover our forwardline.

I think I might sit in the middle ground of excited about Sturt, kid has great potential but maybe not jumping to the "he's the next Fyfe" just yet :p

He won't need that outrageous expectation on top of taking over the #29 jumper.

Yeah next Fyfe is ridiculous, but even Fyfe's pre draft highlights weren't as good.

Obviously there is a lot of development required for him to make it, and there is the ever present threat of injury, but he definitely seems like a good get at pick 17.

Dandenong Ranges looks about as far from Melbourne as Joondalup is from Perth.
He's from Frankston South. Border between metro Melbourne & Mornington Peninsula. Similar distance from CBD, maybe a bit further but point remains the same.

My first reaction was to crack it, but have had a lie down and am now trusting that cobblers know more about cobbling than I do. Welcome aboard Bluey!
