This just seems like policy on the run to me. We've seen Tex gradually and reliably deteriorate over the last few weeks and they absolutely should have known he was a massive risk last Saturday. How do you get to Thursday or Friday of game week without having made that decision. I would have thought that the rest week would be well planned and all Tex's energies following the final siren would be centered around repair rather than preparation.

Reality is that the tail still wags the dog at our club. Tex is no doubt pushing extremely hard to play in the Eagles beat down, hope to kick 4 or 5 to prove that he doesn't need a rest. So 'likely to be rested within the next fortnight' become unlikely due to renewed form and vigour. When it comes to putting his hand up to play, he absolutely will not do what's best for the team. If that was the case, he wouldn't have played against the Pies.

I have no doubt he knew when he was interviewed on Tuesday.

"Fortnight" is the key, he's playing this week in the Eagles dead rubber. The week where his selection or absence will have absolutely no bearing whatsoever on the result. If he's genuinely important, surely you rest him this game so that he's available for the Sydney game that will be a lot harder to win.

Ok, Ok, I've got one.

Let's see how ROB and McAndrew go as forwards, and get Burgess to do the ruckwork...

I just continually think about the Richmond game last year where Adam Kelly just kept saying "We pick the best side available to win this week" over and over. That's how we operate.

I mean, you have to say that

It’s more the thought process behind that statement which is incredibly flawed

If Tex played his cards right, he could have rested last week against the Pies, instead of embarrassing himself.
But he had his family and friends do over in Melbourne, so he couldn't miss that special occasion.

So he could have missed last week and then be ready to go this week and filled his socks against easy opposition.

What was he thinking

To be honest, I'd rather Tex played this week at home when the result should be beyond doubt, rather than next week against a stronger opponent in Sydney where he'd likely be a liability in a crowded forward line.

They let Curtin "have a crack at it" against Fremantle in Fogarty's absence and he was a non-entity. He'll have a lot harder time in Walker's absence than Fogarty's.

Equally the club seems entirely unconcerned with his actual output, but probably don't want a complacent player. If you're going to drop a player to keep them sharp, it's generally more effective in a game when they are expecting to pad their stats against a week opponent.

wow 1 game in proper role for a top 10 pick, playing in front of a midfield that stunk it up

Doesnt really make a lot of sense.

If we think we need him in those tougher games, makes sense to rest him.

Does anyone think we've learned anything from Tex's game and subbing off on the weekend in a narrow loss?

Will we make smarter decisions moving forward?
We've been making the same mistakes for 6 years.
I cant see anything changing.
The incumbents don't want to give a young bloke a go in case they perform better than what they are

Everyone could see Tex needed a rest, except the coaches.
