Autopsy Round 19, 2023 : Hawks can’t get it done against Tigers

I disagree, I think he gets the best out of himself playing like he does and we need him to do that every week.
He doesn't need to change how he plays. He didn't just say something under his breath, he turned towards the umpire and tee'd off. He just needs to not mouth off directly at the umpire.

I feel for you SYL. You can put up every stat or fact that counters the argument but people just want to pot him.
I mean, I get that he needs to do more, but some of the crap written on here is so unbalanced.

He is 30 games into his career. And interestingly Sam on SEN was asked about the rucks and he pointed out that apart from Gawn most premiership sides have had a serviceable ruck not a superstar. At the moment I am all for a Reeves/Frost combo going forward.

Yep.

There are shades of grey in every argument - which many fail to appreciate.

For those people, it’s black or white, with no subtlety.

I normally hate losing so much it wrecks my weekend.

This one is different - we played well enough in patches and will get better over summer.

Little was riding on it for us, and a lot for them.

The sting of losing a close one will stay with Weddle and co and they will learn from it.

The positives outweighed the negatives, this one time.

I wouldn't be surprised if Finn gets votes in the PCM for today. Was exceptional in his role.

Bizarre that we took him off Rioli in the last and moved him on to the wing.
Exactly what I was thinking at the time. Finn kept Rioli quiet and the Tigers struggled to transition from defence to attack. As soon as he’s moved up the ground Rioli starts getting involved and Richmond gets a run on.

Wowee we have some fragile supporters. Lots of toys being thrown out of the cot.

Fair dinkum, who really expected to win that game? Does it sting that we lost from the position we were in? Sure, but we showed plenty and the lack of experience is really what cost us in the end

Another 12 months and we probably don’t lose that game. It’s a development year and there’s been plenty of good signs

Also can’t believe the posts around Sicily, mostly regarding the decent call and lack of leadership. He had a blinder yesterday. Have we forgotten how we were going when he was out for 3 weeks? If he didn’t play yesterday, the result would have been much worse than 1 point.

Exciting things happening.

Plus it knocked the bombers further down the ladder. It’s not all bad.

Criticism of the decision to sub DGB is bizarre. The guy had delivered doughnuts for 3 quarters and would surely have been odds on to be the one dragged. We all would have made the same call if we were in the coaches' box.
Yeah it’s weird criticism of the coach. A senior person at the club described him internally as “insipid after half time” in games due to his fitness levels. So when he has a clean sheet at half time, he’s not shaping as a match winner. If Reeves or Meek had a clean sheet at half time, the fans would lose it.

I preferred the Reeves/Frost combination to the Reeves/Meek combination, though it’s not a long term option. At the moment the two specialist rucks don’t offer enough around the ground or up forward to justify playing both. Reeves is the better tap ruckman so he is in front but hopefully at least one of the two can really develop their game over the next couple years.

Highlight of the game yesterday was watching Sicily. A number of times I watched the Richmond player before they kicked and immediately knew Sicily would intercept, including that excellent pack mark. He just positions himself and reads the play amazingly well. Such a gun player

So many poor decisions made in that last quarter. The Weddle kick back into the corridor, the Day spoil back into the corridor , which could’ve been a steadying mark. And how many clearances did we get in the last q? Still pissed !

I feel our coaches went defensive about 8 minutes to early.

It also shows we need another KPF and a Watson type forward.

Then its all about tweaking the list, developing our team and game plan.

2024 will be an exciting year, an that final spot in the 8 should be our goal.
Ive just watched from after half time .

We looked knackered about 5 minutes until the last . We still had some good opportunities to ice the game just made some poor decisions and skill error under fatigue .
At a guess we probably went defensive as we were gassed in bid to hold out .
We just dont have the experience yet to pull that off .
It will come .

Tigers normally roll us over and in previous games we have looked done a hell of a lot earlier .
Thats a big positive despite the final result

Really disappointing to lose another close one like this.

I've heard Mitch say that we haven't done much scenario training in how to handle the last few minutes of close games and it's shown this year.

Still glad to see us compete well with a younger brigade having a significant impact. It says a bit when you see Tom Mitchell subbed out of a top of the table clash with 15 touches. We're making the right calls.

Hopefully we can finally run over these pricks next year.

It's taken me to the next day to get over the devastation and then the subsequent FLAT feeling, but now I'm here, as usual I'm far more circumspect and philosophical about it. Now I see far more positives, we dominated them for three quarters, and played extremely well to do so. This year, the wins and losses column means as little as it ever imaginably does, what matters is we totally took it up to a side with many premiership players on its list when we have a single, solitary ONE, and a side desperate for a win to keep its finals hopes alive. They were always going to come, and come hard.

I'm calling it now, Duke, Day, Worps and Nash is the core of a premiership-winning midfield.

We won the clearances 9-7. We just won’t able to get the ball deep inside 50 from them and the tigers killed us on the rebound once they got the ball in space.

Another couple of preseasons in the legs and we won’t tire as easily and we comfortably hold on if not pull away.

Yep - in teams that are well developed, and know they're playing finals, this type of training comes to the fore at this time of the season.

Trying to keep stoppages tight to minimise opposition flow, moving the footy around in space by kicking / using loose players, etc.

Clearly we are a long way off that as a club, but there were enough experienced players out there to know we could've played a bit differently, and kept cooler heads in the last 10 minutes, then we did.

We definitely did try to keep the ball on the skinny side (which was a good thing), but in the end our lack of composure with ball in hand, and inability to defend the opposition on turnover, reared its ugly head again.

Cornes in TRSF said some pretty glowing things about us imo.

I think that he's right when he says things like "Hawthorn are closer to their next premiership than Richmond"

So much to like about that game- the first three quarters show our blueprint for success!

“I think we need to start holding ourselves to a higher standard the further we go.

“Today we proved our best footy is pretty good, but if we don’t have the mentality needed at key moments we’re going to fall away badly and get run down.”

Spot on Sam, spot on. :thumbsu:

There was some parts of the last where some calmness and structure was injected. We wrestled back control for short periods, which is a definite improvement from other momentum swings against us this year. Just couldn’t capitalise. Think Bucks mentioned it too
