SFNL Division 2 2017

Heard Hampton Park have voted to join Southern. Will they start in Division 2?

Great. Another battling club who are non competitive in their present competitions jumping into the SFL. To make matters worse that area is already awash with clubs struggling to survive.

Would be great to see some stronger clubs come across for reasons other than the SFL being seen as an easier ride.

Keysborough have returning Chris Bryan (ex Collingwood/Carlton) from Bonbeach, Tim Werner (2014 Runner Up B&F) from overseas, Gerard Smith & Jonathon Hawes (both from Beaconsfield), Matt Burnett from Karingal & Reece Spaddacini from year off. They have also recruited Sandown captain Jake D'Atri.

Sounds impressive. Do they have the depth to cover injuries? That is what has hurt Keysie in the past few years.

Remains to be seen, will have another huge influx of young players joining them as they did this year and a fair few depth players returning also. Likely they will have Under 19s also.

Hampton park are strong financially. They just can't generate the huge numbers needed to compete with the top SEFNL clubs so they keep what they have in the bank. If they came over they would be very strong straight away.

It would make life a bit tougher again for the surrounding clubs if they do come over

Don't be surprised to see Springy and Heatherton the big improvers this year. Although not winning many games this year they were really only 5-6 goals off the pace excluding Colts. Both sides would admit that they didn't have great lists this year particularly when injuries hit in the second half of the year. Both have already added a number of Key Players to make up that gap. Both Clubs know that Division 3 would almost mean the end for them. Can't see East Brighton causing too much trouble. They were terrible last year and results flattered them if anything with the top sides resting players against them. Their best players are well over 30 still. Chelsea Heights and then I reckon you can throw a blanket over 5 sides next year to challenge. By far the most even of all 3 Divisions.

Heatherton might be losing a few to Lyndhurst.

Seems Division 1 Reserves has been a bit of pool for recruiting the last couple of years
It's a smart move. Most don't want coin they just want to play Senior Footy. If you recruit gun players from higher Divisions they want too much coin. Reserve players from Higher Divisions makes more sense. Tunners new coach was a fringe player at Tooradin. Apparently popular with a few to follow. Not sure on the losses to Lyndhurst but if they are looking to go down a Division they probably struggled this year anyway.

HAMPTON Park Football Netball Club is on the hunt for a new coach and has little choice but to work with its existing governing body after a request to switch leagues was emphatically denied.
Members of the club, including players, raised the possibility of a move from the stronger South East Football Netball League to the lower divisions of Southern Football League at the club’s Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 25 October.
The discussion point was not an agenda item at the AGM, so couldn’t be put to a vote, leaving the club’s executive committee to put forward its case at a meeting with AFL South East General Manager Jeremy Bourke and SEFNL Leagues Manager Liz Triffitt.
It was at this initial meeting that the club was told it had missed the deadline date for its request to a move to another league – October 15. It was also told that under no circumstances would AFL South East and the SEFNL release the club from their governance – the only way out for the club after it had missed the initial deadline.
This has left the club with two options for 2017 – to either compete in the SEFNL or not play at all.
The club’s 2016 coach Matt Shorey resigned on Monday, the difficulty of luring players to a club that has won just four games from 80 outings since the start of 2012 finally taking its toll.
The Gazette understands that the club contacted more than 80 players, including former AFL stars, in a recruiting push that was set to bring new excitement to Robert Booth Reserve.
The club is financially secure, turning a $30,000 debt into a $70,000 balance over the last few years. The club has tried to lure players with financial enticements for 2017 but its on-field performance has damaged its brand.
The club’s best player, Nathan Allen, has already signed with rival club Narre Warren for next season, while several other players are said to be fed up with the constant shellacking’s and assessing their whereabouts for next year.
Recently appointed club president Michael O’Brien said this year’s AGM had certainly opened debate.
“That’s why AGMs are there, for people to voice their opinions and to promote healthy debate,” O’Brien said.
“Some will choose to leave, but the ones that remain will earn their success, go through the pain and come through the other side the hard way. We will have a core group of players, supporters and administrators that have the best interests of the club at heart.”
O’Brien said the initial decision to discuss the possibility of a move with the league was a hard one, but had opened the door for open discussion and cast fresh light on the future.
“We’ve made no secret of the fact that we’re calling out for divisional football, we need it to survive, and we need it for the league to be competitive in all grades,” he said.
“All conversations we’ve had with AFL South East and SEFNL would indicate that divisional football will be here in 2018 … and we need it.”
Inside sources at the club have confirmed with the Gazette that the raising of the issue has caused a split within the football club, with some keen to move and others keen to stay put. It’s understood the netball club, a successful piece of the SEFNL puzzle, is against the move.
Bourke was due to meet Hampton Park members at a specially convened meeting at the club on Tuesday night.

Dingley was in the same boat many years ago, the club was divided if we should stay or go. 7 years later and 5 grand finals appearances 3 flags 1 in div 2 and 2 in div 1. Dingley made the right move and are now in a great position. Southerns divisional football is a great thing. Keysy have also made the right decision to come I hope Hampton park follow.

Springy recruiting heavily, keysie building for flag assault. Very interesting season in div 2 I be thinking

Well that is promising. That is the beauty of playing Divisional footy. It gives a club a chance to spend a few years developing players. Div 2 sounds like it will be an interesting competition next season.

Looks as though HP will be forced to play out another winless year. Really what is the point if they get hammered by 100+ points every week?
Stupid decision by all concerned. Better off letting them play in the SFL and allow them time to rebuild their club.

Sane could be said about EB last year, realistically the smartest thing would have been to relegate them and bring up the runner ups from 2015

Speaking of which, will East Brighton have a reserves team this year? Or will there be a forfeit/bye for Division 2 reserves.

Would it be fair to say they need to find about 25 players this year?

All good players . Morris is the pick of the bunch being the only guy who played seniors at Dingley the past few years.
All of these boys would have played Divvy 1 at almost every other club in the SFL. Not easy getting a game in Dingley's Seniors the last couple of years. Todd Wills was another Dingley Ressies player who went to Springy last year and he won their BnF. These guys are as good as Todd Wills. 7 new Senior Players players in all so far, I'd expect them to play finals next year.

They'd be pulling out the phone book! Already got Mitch Backman back there and wouldn't be surprised to see some others return. They'll pull together the numbers but I doubt they'll be much trouble for a couple of years

Agree to a certain extent. Yes they would have got a senior game at most clubs, but whether they were regular seniors players the jury is out for mine. Yes Dingley seniors were a great team but most of these players for long term reserves players for a reason

I agree only time will tell. Poppa wasn't big on training but still kicked his 50+ goals in the Ressies. Can only play full forward so with McQueen, Geartner/ Farmer and co he wasn't getting a look in. Wilbur won a league Medal in the Ressies and came top 5 this year only playing 8 games. Didn't get along with Shane/Bear. Tom Cooper has had Francis/Cleeve/Morgan ect ahead of him. Not easy for a game in the ruck unless there is injuries. Billsy wasn't big on training until this year. I haven't played Divvy 2 since Dingley was last there but have seen a few Heatherton/Keysy and Springvale games and I don't think the standard gap is that big between the top Division One Reserves sides and the 3rd to 6th Ranked teams in Divvy 2. Like I said time will tell. With 3 or 4 more walk ups already signed you would have to rank Springy ahead of mobs like Highett and Skye.

Highett for me were a team who under acheived massively given their talent, I can't see Springy going past them regardless of their Dingley recruits.
