I don't agree at all.

The thing that people keep overlooking is that if you get the ball first it then gives you first possession if the game remains tied and goes into sudden death.

Hypothetically If SF took the 2nd possession and the score was tied at the end of both possessions and KC then won via a field goal on the 3rd possession then Shanahan would have be annihilated for taking the ball 2nd.
Yeah I agree with this.

They needed to score 7 realistically. Had they though, they'd have had the best chance of winning at the end of both first possessions.

Isn't it obvious by now that the nuances of the new OT system had completely passed by the SF 'brains trust'? Clueless!

I'm still gobsmacked by comments made by their players after the game not knowing the overtime rules.

They had 2 weeks of preparation. Many believed this Superbowl was a coin toss so the chances of overtime were always going to be minimal. Surely, at some point in that 2 week span, the rules of the game were looked over and passed onto the staff & players. They are on huge salaries. Imagine an AFL team entering the grand final and players from one team not knowing the extra time rules.

It's all on the 49ers coaching staff.

Contrast this with the Chiefs players who apparently were getting annoyed with all the OT discussions.

Yes, but the second team always gets to control whether the game remains tied.

For example, had San Fran scored then KC get to decide (and almost certainly would) to go for 2.

There's no way Andy wouldn't have gone for 2 if he'd scored a tying TD.

I suppose going first you put some pressure on other team in that if you score a FG would the other go for TD on 4th down if in FG range? Be very reluctant to tie with a FG and give the other team a chance to win it with FG

Those are also questions that the team going first has to ask though: 'is three enough?'

Shanahan probably should have asked that question when he chose to kick.

Anyway off to the draft thread.....

That was a really great game to watch as a neutral, had everything.

Even better was Marshawn's post game casino walk through looking for Niners fans (a bit NSFW language but funny if you haven't already seen it...):

The beauty of sports is the 'what-if'anaylsis after a game. Some of the following were just as big as the decision to go first in overtime.
  • Mahomes missing Rice to win it in regulation
  • Purdy throwing on third down result was an incompletion and clock stopped
  • Purdy missing an open Jennings during overtime

for two-thirds it was a boring spectacle but that last third was exceptional.

I can see Mahomes winning another couple of Superbowls but once Kelce retires, it will be tough.

I think maximum he can get is 2 more rings and maybe 3 or 4 more SB appearances.

It would be an amazing achievement considering he will have Burrow and Allen trying to chase him down for the next decade.

His division will probably get more stronger than Bradys ever did as well.

Chiefs players confirmed they’d have gone for 2. Makes sense to go for 2 when odds of converting is probably 60% than give the ball back to the 49ers in sudden death where reaching FG range would be probable.

I can also envision that somehow being the last Super Bowl Mahomes wins....or, the last one for a decade, before winning a final one on retirement year.
I don't know what to think of it now. He'll be in trouble as Kelce falls away moving forward but this was supposed to be the weakest team they've had in some time and they still won.

Not sure how envision that Nostradamus. He’s only 28 ..they sign a couple of decent skill players for him and he’s in contention again.

Especially with the rumored Mahomes restructuring to keep cash available and the youth on the defensive side.

Retain a couple of the players on D due for a payday with the help of the extra space, sign a vet WR with decent hands and some tread left that wants a shot and they should be favored until something drastic changes.
