As per 7 news, there was apparently a 29 page document detailing the steps that were to be taken should Buddy kick his 1000th goal and doesn't sound like any of the steps were followed

One of the crazy things is that only an additional 20 guards were to be employed for the night - like seriously, like that few would make a different

Something like 8 or 9 guards, plus the lead were meant to surround Buddy to escort him from the field - that didn't happen

Other guards were meant to help escort & shuffle the remaining players from the field - that didn't happen

4 guards were meant to be located in the aisles around the goal at the end Buddy was lining to kick his 1000th goal & retrieve the ball - that didn't happen

Seems there was a lot of planning but virtually no execution of that plan

I'm just in awe of the fact someone was able to spin up 29 pages' worth of the sentence "Don't let fans on the ground". Even better if they pretended to be serious.

Would love to be the mandarin with that gig. A stressful, vital football role being performed right there.

I'm pretty sure that there was one page which was just a photo of Buddy and it said, "this is Lance Franklin and he'll be kicking goal #1000 on Friday night"

Being able to get 29 pages out of this is the apprenticeship for getting on the rules committee.
The 'we must justify our position by making ___ changes to the rules this year' committee.

Sadly not so funny when you hear these guys needed to be escorted out for their safety.

Apparently six different Cats players have complained so far about being targeted by supporters who ran onto the field. Same situation as 2E except he said that was accidental and these players were intentionally hit. Only person I have heard mentioned by journalists so far is Jeremy Cameron, and the Swans should have known this could happen to him given he was with their rival for years.

The Swans really messed up with what little security they had organised. Buddy or any one of our players could have been hurt. As Mick Malthouse said it only takes one idiot. And there are a lot of idiots who love footy.

Hopefully the Geelong boys who were targeted feel comfortable speaking about it. The pressure to stay silent and not taint Buddy's triumph would be immense, especially since footy still has a toxic "keep your mouth shut about uncomfortable things" culture. Plus men tend to shrug stuff like this off as to not appear "weak," which is not good for them.

Fingers crossed the Cats are providing the correct support for the players who were targeted because that would have been scary situation no matter how big, strong, and masculine they are.
Can confirm Barrett's comments around the Florent/Warner 100% not true.

That chest mark did look particularly suspect.
Did it? Looked fine to me.

Looked even better to the umps who'd gifted him his second major earlier on and somehow missed just about the clearest free on the entire night at the other end in the lead-up to the golden moment.

Yes because that's the only time dodgy free kicks happen. Unlike in every other game every single week. Including some that go our way too.

I'd be surprised if security guards of today would even know who Lance Franklin is let alone AFL footy.
Like the one a few years back that came onto the ground thinking it was his job to break the players up,these would the same clowns that were tasked with securing COVIT hotel quarantine no training on idea, glorified in their minds supermarket trolley collectors.

I suppose I'm an old party-pooper, but i thought the whole thing reflected a sort of collective immaturity. I felt concerned for Buddy's safety. The time wasted was ridiculous. Another 100 security guards would have made no difference.

Looks likely we'll have De Koning, O'Connor, and Miers back this week. CS comments seemed to suggest Higgins would be back too. No idea who comes out for them.

Miers is coming back through the vfl. He basically had no pre-season. He's still probably 2-4 weeks away from consideration.

I'd go MOC for Zuth.

The really telling part of what went on was all the people supposedly gathering around Buddy for 'the moment' who were bascially giving their undivided attention to the camera on their phones. Just further confirmation of how self-centred and image-obsessed our culture has become today.

Buddy's 'moment' became so many people's 'moment with Buddy'. Proving yet again that growing older is compulsory and growing up is optional.

If they genuinely wanted to stop people coming on the ground, publicly announce beforehand - like days before - it would be an on the spot $20k fine with no exceptions. Then start handing them out.

I think I've seen crowds run on the ground for celebrations about 4-5 times. Ablett twice (I missed the 1994 game), various other players from other teams. I can't remember a single instance where the crowd was on the ground for ten minutes maximum. People got on, patted the player on the back (maybe), then got off. That was it.

Now these geniuses get together, write a 29 page document, allow for a set period of time, and amazingly enough, the crowd isn't in a rush to get off. Shocked and surprised.

Dodgy free kicks do happen regularly. Which makes it entirely possible to pluck one of the most extreme examples out of the clear blue sky for Buddy in the third to make sure he stays on track for the milestone. And then swallow the whistle when the ball's going to be heading to the wrong end of the ground with the minutes counting down in the last.

I'm not suggesting that they all sat around together and announced what their winnings would be once Buddy delivered on his end of the bargain. Just that human nature is such that being part of the grand spectacle would have been a relatively easy collapse for them when the opportunity presented itself.

I only had to consider what would have been the adjudication if Hawk had gone to ground like Buddy did to know that there are sometimes rules for one player and rules for others. And rules for one circumstance and rules for others as well.

'Whispers in the Sky' has always seemed entirely plausible to me. So, if that human element has entered umpiring ranks in the past, a gentle nudge in the right direction (which is more than what Buddy got on Friday night, mind you) would seem to be in order when the moment 'demands' it.

That's the point, though. They really didn't. After all, why spoil such a golden moment in the history of our game?
