Best 10 under 21

Max would be around the mark. Had a great debut season keeping the best small forwards quiet... except Greene who got hold of him, but he is the best in the business.
Greene makes a lot of good defenders look silly. If he wasn't such a fool he would probably be thought of as highly as anyone in the league.

1. Nick Daicos
2. Harley Reid

Then a chook raffle

You may want to re-read the OP... as it's a current ranking, which is based on players AFL output so far. ;)

Very likely Reid storms into top 10 next season.

If we use the 21 and under as of today (26/12/2023) then these would be the eligible players from each club good enough;

(players taken from footy wire)

Machito Owens - this could have been raffled off to a number of guys. Ginbey, Michaleney, Soligo even a couple of hawks but settled on Owens who is a mainstay of the Saints line up now

Of the clubs who didn't have anyone, Sydney and Geelong didn't really have many that would push the top echelon so didn't worth mentioning.
Good input. Gee that Bombers trio looks very mediocre

Sam Darcy at the Doggies has the potential to be an absolute gem.

I'm starting to think the Giants may have the best list in the comp...

Depends how Cadman pans out...

But if he's any good then the rest of the comp might have a problem...
GWS has had the best list in the league for at least half a dozen years in the last decade. Never done even close to enough with it. The conventional wisdom sheets that all back to Leon but I have my doubts.

Nah this isn’t right. We didn’t have a proper ruck for most of our existence forcing mummy to go on years too long and we tried to shoehorn too many mids into the team as they were top picks who had to be played …. The constant loss of such players then regularly destabilized things

This year is the most balanced we’ve ever been

Ruck is the most overrated position in the league. Most flag winners have an average ruck at best, and the only elite ruckman to win a flag in recent memory is Gawn.

Your list has been mind bogglingly good for years.

Losing Jezza was bad. The rest were all easily replacable by players already on your list.

You aren't wrong about the quite simply insane number of elite picks you have been given, and the sheer number of top midfielders you have drafted from them. A truly endless conveyor belt. And it continues up to this day.

To be fair, that’s nothing new. Practically each year they have one of the best lists on paper. The challenge has always been to get them to play cohesively and play more as a team.

It may well be they now have the coach who can do this.

Yeah I had them both in (see my list above) above MacDonald, absolutely.

Right now I wouldn't have either MacDonald or Soligo in my top ten, they'd be in the next group alongside players like Wilmot, Hobbs, Weddle, and several others.

There's a clear top two:
Daicos
Sheezel

Followed by (no order):
Owens
NWM
JHF
Rachele
Amiss
Callaghan
Ashcroft
Ward
ward? I knew when scrolling up it'd be a hawks fan. he had a terrible year. couldn't even crack the midfield in a developing team despite being a top 10 pick.

Let me preface by saying I watch GWS regularly on free to air, they haven't had a fantastic list year after year. They had/have a great midfield on paper, defense is finally settling now under Sam Taylor's leadership as well as a reliable core like Idun, Buckley and Perryman.

Forward line has been a Toby Greene one man show after Jezza left and Hogan arrived in 2020, with Hogan (49 goals) finally hitting his straps this year along with Riccardi (35 goals). It was a patchwork forward line for last 2 years with Greene battling away without any support acts stepping up with him. They need another tall like Cadman to establish themselves in that forward line along with Hogan and Riccardi continuing their 2023 form to take that next step. Callum Brown is a bundle of energy in that forward line but hasn't translated to an effective third tall yet.

New Coach has definitely helped and it again proves having a long list of early draft picks doesn't guarantee anything.

Rucks might be overated but the difference in our team with Briggs has been huge (hope he keeps it up). Also playing proper half forwards in Daniels and Bedford over extra mids.

We have lost a lot of players that you call "easily replaceable" but constantly needing to replace players has held us back.

Treloar, Adams, Shiel, Tomlinson, Wislon, Williams, Lobb, McCarthy, Patton, Setterfiled, Marchbank, Kennedy etc. etc, etc plus many more recent losses. These all had roles that needed rejigging. They never really matched their giants form at other teams ... but their loss hurt us year after year. A conveyor belt doesn't equal a great list ... it means a few stars and a constant list of young players filling in holes.

So I can say we've had a lot of quality pass throught the club, but the list has never been properly balanced.
