Best prelim finals of all time

Dude Rohan is nowhere near Lynch or Riewoldt, anyway if Geelong get Hawkins and Rohan, Richmond gets Rance who cancels them out anyway
Lynch, Riewoldt and Edwards were good for 5.9 goals/assists a game in 2019.

Hawkins, Rohan and Duncan over 6 goals/assist per game that season.

Richmond's didn't skip a beat once Rance was injured and was a strong unit without him.

Geelong kicked 9.12 from 50+ inside 50s minus Hawkins, Rohan and Duncan. That 21 point half time margin with the around the ground dominance would've been 50+ points. Game over.

Pretty much won us the 22 QF then we went onto win the flag so yes, he’s better.

Graham is a glorified VFL player. Rohan, while being inconsistent, is a clear cut above.
And Graham had a great game in the 2017 grand final, anyway Graham injured his shoulder during the game, leaving Richmond essentially a man down

There's no point pretending Richmond's knocks were worth the 5 combined goals/assists that Hawkins/Rohan/Duncan averaged in career finals.

Plug those three in, take Lynch/Riewoldt/Edwards out and give knocks to Miers, O'Connor and Guthrie and Geelong absolutely romp that game in.

Captain_Bender I can see your brain imploding that those 3 Cats hit the scoreboard per game more than those 3 Tigers in 2019.

Dude Rohan would have had zero impact on the game, stop kidding yourself

In over 45 years of watching the cats, I have only once felt physically sick at a game of football from the stress and that was Geelong vs Collingwood 2007. It was so nauseating that I wanted to leave.

There were decades of built up expectations, a magical season about to be lost, another finals tragedy unfolding.

Both 1996 essendon v sydney and 1999 carlton v essendon were both close games and if essendon won both of them it could mean my north melbourne don't win those premeirships so i have those to prelims quite high

If I had to choose top 10

GWS vs Doggies 2016 - Intense as *
Roos vs Cats 1994
Saints vs Dogs 2009
Hawks vs Cats 2013
Crows vs Eagles 2006
Pies vs Hawks 2011
Port vs Richmond 2020
Dons vs Crows 1993
Swans vs Dons 1996
Dogs vs Crows 1997

1991 Cats vs Eagles Sumich got 6 out of 11 in a tough slog soaked in the mud and wet.

Was that a good game? I've seen the highlights multiple times. Man Peter Sumich really ****ed up Geelong didn't he. Some big bags in 91 Kicked 7 or 8 out at Waverley And a whole bunch of points to go with it. Like he did in the return game 5.8 in a one point win. He probably got them again in 1990 but in that 92 series he hit them for 8 and 6 in the 2nd semi and Grand Final.

Edited - Man have to throw Geelong vs Pies 2007 in there.

Prelims are the best games of the year.

Hawkins and Rohan combined for 120 goals/assists in 2019, Duncan another 32. Imagine those three Cats in and Lynch, Riewoldt, Edwards out and that's what Geelong had to deal with. Richmond foot soldiers picking up knocks in no way canceled that effect out.

2020 was a different game altogether with considerably worse inside 50 and clearance differential for the Cats. Different game lost for different reasons (one of many was Martin dominating 2020, whereas 2019 had Kelly still at Geelong and dominating). 2019 Ablett wasn't injured from the start, Selwood played much better etc but in either 50 Geelong were outmatched. Houli 32 disposals and 9 rebound 50s said it all.

2019 was the golden chance without the cavalry.
Shame that Hawkins had to punch Schofield in the head 100m behind the ball to get himself suspended, somehow for only 1 week.

And Geelong appealed it!!??

Yes we did. We were 9th going into the bye with a 7-6 record, then won 12 in a row to the flag. Our defence without Rance was a shambles and it took the better part of half the season to get things sorted.

1999 is the best imo all things considered. It was 1st against 6th and The Blues had no right to win that game. They played fantastic football. That Bombers side were unreal and were red hot premiership favourites. Look at the names in both sides like Lloyd, Long, Silvagni, Bradley, Ratten, Kouta. Just unbelievable. Kouta was insane that day. The Blues led, got pegged back but came back themselves. A one point win was fitting of the game and the ocassion and imo it's the best Prelim of all time.

That was a great season. The last before the new milenium and fitting. Great to see Shane Crawford get a Brownlow as well.

It is going to be damn hard for there to ever be a bigger upset in a PF than that game. yes the bombers who were in scintillating form during the 2nd half of the season (like lions in 2001) should have won that by 10 goals.

The difference also nowadays is that a team who finishes 6th and loses week 1 is eliminated. Up until 2000, both 5th and 6th could lose week 1 and then find themselves in the PF after just one finals win! The system was a sham.
