why?

He got his 3 years

Rookie list means literally nothing, anyone who thinks it does is living in the past
Let's say Schultz is on 200k a year.

He signs a 3 year contract with the Hawks. He is guaranteed 600k. He does a knee in year 1. He is still guaranteed to be an AFL footballer for 3 years. He gets all of his 600k and gets be a pro footballer around the club for the entirety of his rehab and then whatever is left of his 3 years. Even if he never plays another senior game after his knee.

He signs 2 years with us with a trigger for a 3rd. He is now only guaranteed 400k. He does a knee in year 1. He only gets 400k and only gets to spend two years at the club doing his rehab because he will never make his trigger for the third year.

If you had a chance of 3 years guaranteed versus 2 years with chance of a 3rd if everything works out, it is pretty wild that a pro takes the shorter contract.

Its the reason why Parker hasn't yet re-signed with Sydney. Or why Lobb is on the lookout for a new deal somewhere else.

Hawks contract was more per year apparently too.

Our culture here sucks.

Yeah but then he has to move club to Hawthorn and not stay with the club he wants to be at

If he doesn't injure his knee then he gets 3 years at the Dockers, which is what he was aiming for

Sure. But he is risking a third of his money to be here. Would you risk a third of your salary to stay with your current employer?

May not be risking much, contract trigger could be small and only there as a means to keeping him on the rookie list

We couldn't offer him 3 years straight out without upgrading him, if the trigger is like 10 games then thats pretty small and he gets to stay at the club he wants to be at.

Life is a game of risk. But, at the end of the day - Shooter is a Legend. This is the kind of loyalty people fight together in the trenches for. The journey to the flag is so much sweeter when you do it with the gang you battled through the hard times with. I pray that this is the sign of better times ahead for the club be it winning as well as its culture.

Very happy with this news. Bloke looks decent in our current forward line which bodes well if we finally do the right thing and draft some more attacking talent.

2 years to stay here over 3 back at home is a good sign for club culcha too.

Shooter is a team man, who wants to be around a good bunch of chaps.

On the other side, Freo should back him in for the whole 2 years, to allow the best chance to trigger the 3rd.

Love Schultzy .. needs a bit of consistency but when he is on he is great
Its a bit of a general small forward problem. Talls can dominate even when side gets butchered (remember Pav or Fevola win a Coleman in a wooden spoon team). Very few small forwards can do that. So a bit of inconsistency will be the deal with all smalls. But 30+ should be a decent goal.

I think alot of ou small forward problem is them not being at the fall of the ball when we go forward. They tend to get sucked up the ground. This is exacerbated by the fact that the opposition midfielders get back to help before ours get forward.
