Interesting rule. Would suck if you had a player out for an extended period (like O'Meara) coming back late in the year and you couldn't get a couple of games into them at state league level.

We changed the rules over here so you need to play at least 5 WAFL games (league and/or reserves) to be eligible for WAFL finals and a team can field at most 15 AFL-listed players. Freo cycled their players through the WAFL last year and their WAFL affiliate fielded 17 AFL-listed players during the finals. Pretty hard for clubs without an AFL affiliate to match sides that can do that. Bit different in the VFL where there are more clubs so it's not just 2 of 9 with AFL-listed players available.

The VFL is essentially just the AFL reserves plus Port Melbourne and Williamstown. With the VFL reserves getting the chop, can pretend to be anything other than that.

I hope the VFL can settle down for a few years. Every year there seems to be changes to alignments, who has and hasn't got a reserves side etc.

This happened with Rioli when he returned from his hammy in 2014. From memory the AFL gave special dispensation for Rioli to play in the VFL GF (happy to be corrected here). Cyril was benched in the last which arguably cost Box Hill the premiership.

If they aren't playing now, the chances of them playing finals is practically non existent - they would be going into games with absolutely no game time let alone finals time. This is why GWS are pushing merde uphill

I guess that depends how desperate you are to see only what you want to see. Answering the content of the question doesn't seem to be enough.
